1981 Song is ALWAYS at the Top of BEST 1-Hit Wonder Polls…But It Was NEVER a HIT!--Professor of Rock

Today’s band Red Rider was a well-kept secret in their time and they had multiple hits in their homeland of Canada. In the early 80s inspired by several transformational moments, they wrote a masterpiece: Lunatic Fringe. It’s been called one of the coolest one-hit wonders ever. The only problem is… It was never a hit. At least not in America where it’s always in the top one-hit wonders of the time. Well, today we give Lunatic Fringe its due and the Cinderella band that created it, Red Rider. They crafted many hits in Canada but always came up short here in the States. But when lead singer Tom Cochrane went solo, he had a top 5 hit his first time out of the gate. The story is next on Professor of Rock The song had to be re-recorded because the master tape fell apart. This was devastating for the band, but they ended up with a better version, complete with the Peter Wolf keyboard intro - he wasn't part of the first recording.

We also have a patreon you'll want to check out. below.
So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. But for whatever reason, whether it was lack radio play, poor marketing, lousy label support or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. But on this show, we put it back where it belongs. On previous episodes we have covered More Than a Feeling by Boston, Spirit of Radio by Rush, and Land of Confusion by Genesis.
But today we are giving some love to the Toronto band Red Rider and their haunting rocker Lunatic Fringe that didn’t even chart in america. the band RED RIDER was actually a no hit wonder but the singer and writer would have his redemption.
So like I said, Canada’s Red Rider never really cracked the American market, not in a big way. Which is really a shame, because that means a lot of US listeners have missed out on some incredible music. But with their trademark blend of AOR and New Wave, there’s no doubt Red Rider and bandleader Tom Cochrane were hugely popular north of the border. Cochrane who took up singing and songwriting duties for the band, actually had something of a rock n roll Cinderella story.
Before he joined Red Rider, Tom was already pursuing a career as a folk singer... playing in pubs, roughneck bars, and coffeehouses across the highways of Ontario... And dodging beer bottles in the process. I guess there were some tough crowds up there. In 1974 Cochrane released his first solo album, ‘Hang On to Your Resistance’... although it wasn’t exactly a commercial smash.
In 1975 he composed the music for the soundtrack of ‘My Pleasure is My Business’. After that Tom released two more stand-alone singles... ‘Softly Walk Away’ in 1975 and ‘Sail On’ in 1976. As Cochrane chased his big break, he took on a number of jobs to make ends meet... including working as a dishwasher, a cab driver, and a phone book delivery guy. He also worked on the loading dock at Sears and Canada Packers, and even crewed!

In 1981, the song got light airplay in Miami (where I lived), but was probably too hard to categorize for mass popularity - not quite new wave, hard rock or pop enough for such an uncertain time.

I only listened to rock stations, but it was everywhere. My local station played the entire LP one Saturday night. MTV was playing their video - or at least some program was. I remember seeing it. I was obsessed with this song, and I didn't even know what it was about. The guitar was glorious! That solo really got me wondering, as a new guitarist, what makes those notes so perfect for this song? They are perfect. Change one, the solo falls apart. 43 years later and I still don't get it.

Red Rider and Tom Cochrane are literally fixtures of Canadian tapestry of life for those of us lucky enough to be raised in the 80’s. In rural Canada there was never a bush party that didn’t have Lunatic Fringe, Human Race and Boy Inside A Man blaring on a Ghettoblaster or house speakers installed in a farm truck. Great Times.

Yes! I came here to say that. The Tragically Hip were an amazing band, a Canadian institution, who just never cracked through in the US. They eventually gave up trying and built an incredibly strong and loyal fan base at home, recording songs of Canadiana that I’m sure they knew would never be appreciated anywhere outside the country. POR, if you read this you should check out their last concert, which is available on RU-vid. The lead singer, Gord Downie, had been diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer and knew he had only a short time to live. The band set out on a final tour across Canada the summer of 2016. The last show was in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario, and was broadcast live across Canada to a huge viewing audience. It was a fantastic show and incredibly emotional, with everyone knowing they were seeing Gord perform for the last time.

Prof, thank you for covering songs like this, songs that should have been hits but weren't. I'm a college radio DJ (non-traditional student), and I do an 80s show. I try to cover songs that have been forgotten, songs that deserve more love, and deep tracks. I do play hit songs (got to give the audience what they want, after all), but mostly I can play anything I want. You help me find some real greats, and I really appreciate what you do.

“Lunatic Fringe” was heavily influenced by Pink Floyd (I was a kid but I remember kids who actually thought it *was* Pink Floyd), and later I remember the songwriter discussing how reading about a group of Neo n*zis inspired his concern about the “lunatic fringe” that was always out there…

I'll never forget that night when Tom cleaned up at the 1992 Juno Awards that Professor of Rock mentioned. 'Life is a Highway' won over Bryan Adams 'Number One Song of 1991' (according to Billboard) '(Everything I Do) I Do It For You' (had to remember where the parentheses were placed). A highway in Northern Manitoba that enters his birthplace of Lynn Lake is called 'Life is a Highway'. Someone else stated it in another comment where Tom was recently inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame along with Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo (great band) and one of my favourite singer / songwriters over the last 30+ years in Sarah McLachlan.

Thanks for the great video. The Peter Wolf “Lights Out” album you pictured was excellent, but he is a different Peter Wolf than the Austrian producer. This Peter Wolf was one of the guys responsible for possibly the best lyric of 1980: “that bowling ball is my wife!”, from the song “No Anchovies, Please”, on the LP “Love Stinks” by the J Geils Band. That wacky album might be worth checking out, as most people seem to just remember them from the later hit “Centerfold”.

My friends and I didn’t really know Red Rider until we heard this song in the movie “Visionquest” which is one of those movies that Gen X guys resonated with hardcore. I was lucky enough to discover this song when I saw the movie "Vision Quest" with Matthew Modine. Those of you who saw it know what an underrated movie it was, so I guess it kind of fits that Red Rider's Lunatic Fringe would have been on that soundtrack album. I'm with you though, I find it hard to believe that it never really topped the charts in the U.S. because it's a great song! and it fits so well with the pacing and theme of the movie it was included in. If you've never seen the movie, do yourself a favor and see it immediately.

A college friend and myself attended a music industry conference in the late ‘80’s. There were a bunch of vendors there hawking products for both musicians and fans, half of which were clones of the game Trivial Pursuit (I’m sure you remember that one), most of them specifically music oriented. My friend sat down to have a game with some random dude and got his clock cleaned by him. Afterwards he was expressing his amazement at how knowledgeable that guy was. I told him that random dude was Tom Cochrane…

The reason why the song was so popular with people was in spite of it's lyrics' meaning. It was all about the mood that it created, and of course it's appearance on Miami Vice. Total Miami Vice tune, for sure... it along with Phil Collins' tune In The Air Tonight and Glenn Frey's You Belong to the City. They all have that mystical mood to them.
