Credited as Britain's first dedicated black radio station, Dread Broadcasting Corporation (also known as Rebel Radio) was founded by DJ Lepke and transmitted its first programme in 1981.
DJ Lepke: "Something like this would allow blacks to represent themselves, to actually be heard."
As a pirate radio station, DBC had been recently forced off the air, although its DJs planned to defy the law and return it to the airwaves.
"Until recently it [DBC] bombarded the capital every Sunday afternoon with a wide variety of black music, from reggae and soul to calypso and soca."
"Their long-term aim is to be a legal broadcasting service, covering black cultural issues, news, information and music. And they also hope to pave the way for other grassroots stations around the country."
"They're critical of the existing black radio programmes, which they say waters down black culture."
This clip was taken from Oxford Road Show, a music magazine programme.
Contributors include DJ Lepke and Ranking Miss P.
Originally broadcast 22 January, 1982.

In the mid to late 1980s I used to listen to Ranking Miss P's reggae show on BBC Radio 1. Her programme was broadcast late on Sunday nights after Robbie Vincent's soul music show. I remember tracks by Sandra Cross ('Country Living', You're Lying') and Aswad ('Bubbling', 'Kool Noh') getting lots of plays.

Yeah, those days of radio were class. I'm a massive lover of soul and reggae music, loved these shows. I remember the great jingle Ranking Miss P used... Rasta Dad: "Come, come child, time a goa bed" Daughter: "No, no daddy, me wanna stay up and listen to the Ranking Miss P show". 😁

I was so lucky to grow up in 70s and 80s, in a part of Surrey that could pick up most of the London stations, pirate or otherwise, and it was wonderful.

Very very cool. Would have loved to grow up with family or even knowledge with tunes like this. But I've been lucky where I am having an introduction as a late teen. I find it hard to think of tunes that are any better at breaking down barriers and keeping everyone chill with loads of love.

People have loved sharing music with me. I'm real lucky. Wish communities would every weekend have vibes going on left and right. Sadly not here.

Used to listen to Galaxy radio back in London during the 90s as college was coming to an end. Sitting on my floor in my bedroom coding Cobol for my end of year projects.

Anyone remember a London based pirate radio station in the mid 90s called Irie FM? They always had ads for shops and takeaways in Harlesden. And I swear it was the same guy doing the voice-over for every ad!

The one the DJ drops a needle on is Soldier Take Over by Yellowman but the one at the beginning is just a jingle i think.
