Great stuff! Unlimited Hydroplanes are the most beautiful form of motor sport. Big, powerful hulls racing on an ever-changing course, throwing a huge roostertail of water at 200 miles per hour. And a glorious history of famous boats, owners and drivers...people like Gar Wood, Bill Muncey and Chip Hanauer. Nothing like it!
Back when Seafair Sunday on Lake Washington was THE place to be. Look how packed it was back then. Watching this year's Seafair Sunday was quite the stark difference. I wish the big sponsors would come back but there's too many other sports and distractions and things to do these days versus the 70s and 80s. I hope I never live to see it go away. Love the unlimiteds!
I'll never forget the two weeks before he mentioned at Tri-Cities. I was late getting to the river and my friend and I went to get free ice from the ice machines at the the same motel the Bud crew stayed at. Are there it was right after they announced his death on the radio.The Miss Bud on its trailer with its cockpit smashed in. What a great driver he was driving my favorite boat.
Yeah I seen when they converted to the turbine from the aircraft engines. I live in Michigan and use to go every year to see them. It was no longer thunder on the Detroit river for sure.
