Marcus Allen and the Raiders take on Curt Warner and the Seahawks in the AFC Title Game. Seattle swept the Raiders during the year, but this game would turn out to be a different story.
This game will always be special to me. My mom and dad were getting ready to fly out of the country for a wedding the next day. I was 7 and feeling down, so my dad took me to the store (Gemco) and let me pick out a toy. I remember coming home all excited to set up my hot wheels race track and this game was on tv. I ended up watching the game instead. Just one of those random memories that I have spending time with my dad.
Wow I was about your age at that same time. I have similar memories. For those thinking what are hot wheels and couldn't you just DVR the game, I feel bad for you.
@@exchequerguy4037 That's like when Madden went to MNF and Summerall was doing regional games. I will give them this. Bill was a phenomenal analyst. But you could tell he wasn't exactly comfortable in the role. He definitely wanted to be out there leading a team.
My thoughts exactly. Outside of John Madden & Pat Summerall, Enberg & Olson were my all-time favorite broadcasting duo. Growing up in the 1980's and '90's I remember watching a lot of great/classic games with those guys at the helm. 🙂
CLIFF BRANCH should have been inducted years ago! He held EVERY post season receiving record when he retired, until Jerry Rice broke them. There's no way Harold Carmichael was a better pass catcher!
@@darryljackson7600 Cliff Branch held EVERY postseason receiving record when he retired, Jerry Rice broke all of Cliff's records and I say it every year after they announce the pro football HOF finalists, where's Cliff Branch? Harold Carmichael caught more passes, but Branch had a superior average yards per catch AND 3 Super Bowl rings! Branch should have been inducted with Snake Stabler.
That was THE best Raider team on balance, Hendricks , Millen, Alzado, Hayes, Long, Haynes, not a weak link in that chain at all. Not to mention Branch, Plunkett, Christensen and Allen, the perfect blend of young talent, and experience.
Todd Christensen should be in the Hall of Fame. His career stats compare favorably to fellow Pro Bowler Ozzie Newsome, especially given that Todd played FB for several years. I would say Todd had a lot more YAC, and was just as good a blocker. Todd was intelligent, and a Mormon who tried to fit in with the Raiders. A winner.
@@jeffreyrencher9157 I was 16 at the time. I’ve been a Raider fan since ‘75. The was a magical time of my life. I remember watching that game and being so nervous because the Seahawks had beaten them twice that year. I can’t imagine being there live at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1984 and watching that game. I’m so glad you were there to witness it in person. Thank you so much for responding. That was and still is the largest crowd to ever see a Raiders game and you were there.
I was 15 and a diehard raiders fan my cousin was a Seattle fan and I had to listen to him running his trap all season long and he was so confident they were gonna win it was sweet poetic justice when the raiders beat them that day I'll never forget it. Thanks for these great memories. we always watched these games as a family. Wow, great days.
I was raised in L.A. and Love the RAIDERS!! Tom Flores and Jim Plunket was our Mexican Connection to the NFL!! L.A. RAIDERS with one of the Greatest Superbowl Victorys of all Times!!
My Dad had season tickets that year and took me to the previous weeks playoff game against Pittsburgh. This game he took my Mom. What an awesome team, so glad to get the chance to see them!
I was there. Been a Raiders fan forever, it was a helluva year. Marcus Allen was trying to make it with my girlfriend, she worked at Roy’s Mill on Pier avenue, in HermosaBeach,he came in for breakfast all the time, so she got me his autograph, and 4 tickets to Monday night game against Miami Dolphins, they beat Washington in the Super Bowl, and after the Seahawks beat down, I was on the goal posts on the front page of the LA Times the next day!!!!!! That’s right, wearing my favorite flannel, because it was cool and misty that day. WHAT A FANTASTIC FOOTBALL YEAR!!!!
Yeah and they didn't drop like flys to injuries like they do now and the game was more violent back then...I personally don't believe today's injuries are all real injuries I think these guys get paid to act injured to balance games out because of gambling becoming legal it's all perception now...have you not noticed how every year the raiders defense never plays intact by mid season half the team is already injured and because of that it's the reason why the raiders don't win because they don't have the QB who can overcome the injuries so the raiders go through the same cycle it's a pattern they use as their excuse every year and so they stay at 6 to 7 wins a year...it will happen again this year just watch you will see what I mean and organization knows this but won't do nothing to change it I guess the organization is getting paid to be mahomes sidekick like the NFL is saying please don't ruin our golden boy from bringing the NFL money we need our super stars to constantly shine.
That BS interference on Lester Hayes’ interception on the first drive was an absolute criminal call. Lester in his prime was possibly the best cover Cornerback of all time.
The early 80's Raiders were overpowering. With a defense that rushed the passer well and Mike Haynes and Lester Hayes on corners were hard to sustain drives against and Ray Guy constantly pinning opponents deep made it all the harder
True, though I have to wonder, would those physical coverage techniques be legal under today's rules where breathing too hard on a receiver will get you a DPI.
I can't watch old Raiders games.. I get so emotional because I love everything about the Raiders. Also it just reminds me of great times in my life and in America...
Same here, Brother Dee. HTTR! Super Bowl XVIII is moment I would rather forget. But we made it out by the skin of our teeth in the regular season matchup with those same Raiders. Then Super Bowl 18 had to happen. With the exception of that game, that was one of the Redskins greatest seasons ever. Oh well, ha ha
Marcus Allen wasn't given enough credit for his sheer guts and unselfishness; he was happy to block and run interference without complaint until Al Davis pushed him too far.
@@goatmouthjones90 He certainly did; Al 'cut of his nose to spite his own face'. I'm quite sure that if Marcus had stayed, adding Jerry Rice and Gannon along with Tim Brown, we'd have been VERY dangerous in the late 1990's
@Thegreatokie You weren't alone, after his 13 regular season INT's in 1980, The Judge would get flagged for PI or IC Illegal Contact if he so much as breathed on an opposing player.
Similar to Riggins the year before. He only averaged like 3.1 ypc before the playoffs and turned it on. Marcus averaged 3.8 ypc in his sophomore season and then flipped the switch in the playoffs. Three incredible games.
Not only that Chris, but the Raiders as a collective team! In that era, they always seemed to raise their game to another level during the playoffs! And '83 was no different! When completely healthy, the Raiders could beat anyone anytime anywhere! Still to this day blows me away that of the 20 greatest SB champions ranked by the America's Game series, this Raiders squad was rated the lowest of those 20! That ranking is a travesty! The way that Raiders team controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage at the end of that season, to me, their '83 squad maybe one of the 10 best one-season teams in NFL history! That team doesn't get the credit they fully deserve and for that matter neither does Marcus Allen! The fact that he was only ranked #85 of the 100 Greatest Players Ever on NFL Network shows how little those who voted value opinion! Allen hands down was not only the best inside-the-20 RB of all-time, he should have at least been rated in the Top 40 overall! #85 is just asinine!
And the acquisition of Mike Haynes was just plain ridiculous! He is one of the five best DB's to ever play the game, not just the corner position! The five best defensive backfield men in my opinion - and they were MEN - Ronnie Lott, Mike Haynes, Deion Sanders, Mel Blount and Darrell Green! Like Howie Long said in the '83 Raiders America's Game documentary, and he put it best - "Mike Haynes was so athletically gifted, it was boring"!
The Raiders d-line was so good, three non starters in Greg Townsend, Bill Pickel, and Archie Reese combined for 20.5 sacks! Amazing depth. Then you factor in Hendricks, Martin, and Millen...and THEN Hayes, Haynes, and McElroy in the secondary, it's a wonder how anyone scored on them.
Pete Rozelle despised Al Davis more than anyone. Several notable Raiders are not in the HOF because of it. Flores Branch and Hayes are notable omissions
" THAT'S A DAMM SHAME ! the announcer said in this game , "CLIFF BRANCH had the most playoffs yardage in NFL playoff history to that point, wow ! It took way too long , TO INDUCT " CLIFF BRANCH into the " HALL OF FAME. 🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
this is to the LAS VEGAS RAIDERS. this is how you play football. aggressive, dominant. take no prisoners. RAIDERS FOOTBALL. the way it was. thank you oakland raiders of the late 60s and all thru the 70s. la raiders of the 80s. THANK YOU.
@@jackjax532 It's you that's in denial. Raiders were always involved in dead ball altercations cause of how dirty they were. Alzado and Long were just bullies that were on roids. The karma caught up to that franchise
Raiders got screwed by the refs in big games more than any other team. 69 AFL championship Otis Taylor stepped out of bounds, 1972 Immaculate Deception 1974 AFC Championship big offensive tripping call, 1977 Lytle fumble....
That Raiders team would rack up 1 million dollars in fines every game. Most would be suspended before the season was over. This was back when you could play real football.
@@gambloduck6633 You're both right and wrong. The Bears played the same way, but because their stars, especially their DBs were Caucasian (Fencik, Plank Fiske etc.) the media euphemised "dirty" with "tough"
The Might Oakland Raiders and their incipient Will to Victory! Man, they used to piss teams off! I will never forget the AFC Championship of 1977 when the half-assed Broncos ripped the Raiders off at the goal line on an obvious turn-over preventing perhaps the greatest Super Bowl showdown in NFL history: the Cowboys vs. the Raiders!
This was truly an all-time classic NFL Championship Playoff Game one of the best ever one of the greatest ever it was the Raiders at there very best against a really good Seahawks Team they fallowed up this great win by crushing the Washington Redskins in the Super Bowl!!!
being a Raiders fans through this era, I had mad respect for Krieg dude used to get pounded by the Raiders, grew up in Oregon and used to go to Seattle every year to watch them play the Raiders miss that rivalry,
This was the Raiders most dominant and talented team. If they had stuck with Plunkett a couple more years and Davis hadn’t blackballed Allen, the Raiders could have won another Super Bowl. The Raiders weren’t lacking talent in the 80’s.
The Raiders have met each current & former division opponent in AFL Championship [KC 69'] AFC Championship [Den 77' SD 81' Seattle 83'] or SB[ TB] The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were a former AFC WEST member [1976] they've met in the Super Bowl obviously.
@@gambloduck6633 That's a good question. But, they said the sea chickens beat them both times that season. And, I remember being up in Seattle and a guy saying the same thing
@@gambloduck6633 It's called Seeding, division Champions get home field against Wild Card teams. Better OVERALL record12-4 versus 9-7, there's no way in hell the NFL will let a 9-7 team will host a 12-4 team in a Conference Championship game.
@@davidcobb2693 They had the SAME record. Get your facts in order. Must have been conference record, or division record prevailing tie breaker over head to head. If that game was in Seattle, no way they get so many no calls against Hayes and Mike Haynes when they grabbed receivers. Some questionable calls against Seahawks. Small markets didn't get any calls those days.

I was there. Drove down from Burlington WA to watch my Raiders get revenge for the 2 losses to Seattle earlier that season. This game was over before it started. The Seahawks were intimidated, scared, and way overmatched. The Raiders came out ready to beat some serious ass & they were not afraid to get a few personal fouls along the way. Lol
Has any RB in NFL history ever had three games in the postseason like Marcus Allen had in January of 1984?? 121- yards /2TD against Pittsburgh,154Rush/62 Recand 1TD - Seattle and 191 and 2 TD in Super Bowl against Washington. Incredible performance!!!!!!! Sadly the Raiders haven’t won a Super Bowl in 40 years. Just heard Dave Kreig on the Mark Ryan Radio Program 12-27-2023 recounting the win over Miami on the road one week earlier. Didn’t hear him say he was pulled in the Raider game??
I was at this game. We had seats in the stands at one end zone. I was one of those cretins running around on the field after the game. The crowd (not me) knocked over the goal posts, as you can see at the very end. I just pulled up a handful of the grass in the end zone that was painted silver. What a fun game to see live. I was hoarse for a week from screaming/cheering so loudly.
My dad and three cousins and I drove down to cheer on our Seahawks. As a young teen that was an eye opening experience seeing the fans after the game. We were up high at the opposite end of the field from where the goalpost was knocked down. We saw the officer get beaned on the head by a beer bottle someone threw down and get choppered out of there.
@@VMac822 Don't ya just love us Raiders fans? lol Not a fan any more. It was tough to root for them the last few years that Al owned them, it's totally impossible now that his nitwit kid is the owner.
i saw this game live . when you watch a game like this it lets everyone know why we are raider fans . the toughness and the physical nature of this team is the reason i became a raider fan .we had a good mix of youth and vets on that team that's how you become champions. and Al davis was all about toughness and never backing down that's the raider way and no other team was ever able to play this style of football.
I was in attendance with my mom, brother and aunt… along with 92k others. Great day!!. One of the most memorable parts of the day occurred in the aftermath. As the clock hit zero, NOBODY had left the game (out of character for LA crowds back then). What ensued was entertaining chaos involving LAPD in riot gear and on horseback trying to keep the crowd from tearing down the goalposts. Tackles made after the game by Event Staff rivaled that which occurred during it. Lol
It was announced yesterday at the NFL HONORS that Tom Flores is going into the HOF as a coach!!! It's about time!! Also going into the HOF, Charles Woodson!!! We now need Cliff Branch and Lester Hayes in the Hall Of Fame ASAP!!!
People forget about all time great defenses, this Raider team in 1983 had two of the best cornerbacks in the league, a ferocious defensive line, they can stop the run, great Lbs, they didn't have any weaknesses. It's one of the best defensive teams I have seen, they destroyed teams in that playoff run
I remember the last 4 games that year. They beat the Chargers 30-14 the last game of the year, the beat Pittsburgh 38-10 in the first playoff game, then this game they also won 30-14, and the won the Superbowl 38-9. Only a blocked extra point kept these last 4 game scores from being balanced. Damn you Don Hasselbeck!
I remember how important Plunkett was...anytime back up Mark Wilson had 2 come inn...was like a whole other team! Lester was the man...Kenny King was underrated ...he was big in big games! the 80s Raiders were just really good!...Marcus was so slippery when he ran...it looked effortless...so much talent!..now here we r n 2022 winning another one finally !
My only complaint..... I wanted to see the halftime show!!! LOL. I could watch these old games all day long. This early 80's Raiders team was legendary
I watched this game in the rec room, B-4-2, SatCom school on Fort Gordon, GA. I remember thinking to myself that Dave Krieg ain't no Jim Zorn. Also the raiders OL didn't get away with holding, they got away with tackling. Still....Raiders won this game outright and fairly. Flores Hayes and Plunkett should all be in the HOF.
I was there as a kid. A lot of us Rush the field we pulled one goal post down. As they rushed towards the second goal post a number of cops with long billy clubs came out of the tunnel and stopped the crowd. What a crazy day.
I was so bummed from the earlier game where the 49ers got ripped off by HORRIBLE officiating in Washington. I knew the Raiders would smoke the Redskins in SB 18 and they did. This Raider team was awesome.
I'm a Seahawks fan and was in 7th grade when this was played. I made a bet with a friend for $2 for the Seahawks to win. If any Seahawks player reads this you owe me $2. Not that I hold grudges.
I’ve never seen a cornerback as big as Lester, the guy was huge and how in the world was that passing interference at 5:56. This is textbook defense for a cornerback.
Seattle in the AFC? I never knew that. I wonder why they switched them to the NFC. I also really like these old Seahawks uniforms. Man I will tell you what though, the NFL was so much rougher back in these days it seems, so much more enjoyable to watch. The hits are so much harder, I love it.
Of the 3 Super Bowl Winning raider teams, this one that went to Super Bowl 18 was the best I think by a slim margin over the the Super Bowl 11 and 15 winning teams
@@barrywoods5262 Well, the Browns played in the NFL Championship twice in the 1960s after the SB era started and then played in a couple of AFC Championships in the 1980s, so I don't think the Seahawk thing is a big deal.
