So good to see your next Project and always good to watch and pick up some tips. This is from a professional motorcycle mechanic for 25 years but you're always learning all the best and ride safe

Big Keith, it's a bit of a challenge since I don't get to learn as I disassemble since lots of parts aren't on the bike. :-)

I'm so glad to see you putting that one back together. I think they only sold around 1,000 of them in the U.S. I have a 1984 R80ST that I love and will probably never sell.
@BrooksAirheadGarage
@BrooksAirheadGarage 2 года назад
Mikey, you are correct about the number sold in the US being about 1,000. This is the 317th made and is the 2nd one manufactured in January 1984.

@@BrooksAirheadGarage Cool! How do you know yours was the 317th made? Is it in the serial number? These are the last 7 digits of mine: 6207950
@BrooksAirheadGarage
@BrooksAirheadGarage 2 года назад
@@mikeyd6031 Yes, it's the last 7 digits of the serial number. The R80ST USA numbers started at 6207001. Phil Hawskley has a site with the serial numbers showing the month of manufacture for them. This is the link for 800 cc engine models: www.bmbikes.co.uk/chassispages/enginechassis800.htm

@@BrooksAirheadGarage Thanks! I don't think I've seen his site before. Only 30 more made after mine (980 total). I wonder how many are left. I bought the tools from Cycle Works and opened the gearbox on my '76 R90/6. Your videos have been very helpful for knowing what to expect and giving me a good mental picture before I take things apart. Thanks for them.
@BrooksAirheadGarage

@@mikeyd6031 Unfortunately, many have been rebuilt as GS models since they shared many of the same components and GS bikes have become very over priced. I suspect that has cut down on the number of existing ST bikes in the US. And, I'm pleased the videos and my website documents with all the details of how I do this work have helped you keep another airhead on the road.

Hi Brook. I just got a 1981 R100RT and there is so darned much that is extremely different than the 81 Honda CB900c I have been riding for the past bunch of years. Your vids and site have already helped me out a ton. I was just getting in to doing an oil change today and I hit a bit of a roadblock. Unlike your R80 the cap for the oil filter is below the frame with room to spare to remove it (4:24). On my bike, the top bolt is hidden just enough behind the frame to make removing it impossible. It kinda looks like I'm going to have to remove the front mounting bolt and drop the engine a quarter inch or so. Is this normal or do I have something of an oddball? Thanks.
@BrooksAirheadGarage
@BrooksAirheadGarage 2 года назад
Joe, The filter cover bolts were not designed to be obscured by the frame.

@@BrooksAirheadGarage Hmmm. I wonder if something got bent some time in the past 40 years. I'll have to take a closer look. Thanks for the response.

Hi, dear biker community. I’m restoring my bike and I need your help. Bmw r65 1987 problem in light system, position light, low beam, dash light and stop light not working. I’ve checked and replaced all the 6 boxes with others that work perfectly, in addition to having changed the 2 fuses under the seat and checked all the wires for possible breaks or disconnections. Everything was working perfectly until I mistakenly put together pin 3 and 12 main wire harness where the instrument panel connects (when trying to install a new digital dash). Since that time the position light, low beam, dash light, stop light and back stop light don’t work in ignition position 1. In ignition position number 2, the turn signals, high and low beams work if I activate the command and the stop light if I press the brake, however the dashboard does not illuminate, neither do I’ve position lights, stop light. Is there any other fuses or what could have been damaged when connecting those pins (both pins have 12v voltage)? Please if anyone knows what to do I would be very grateful with your help.
