It’s no wonder I’m still a Ford fan at 68 right from when I was a teenager. My Dad always had Granada estates and my mum had Capris, an XR3i Cab and also a Granada Coupe. I also think I must be on my 20th Ford right now! Just “lovely” 😊
I was a ford driver up to about 10 years ago. It ended very abruptly when i had a string of problems with my 2 year old under warranty 2lt diesel Focus. It only have 17K on the clock , things that were what i consider were ware and tear were not covered. ie window motors, leaking brake cylinder, all 4 shocks were misting .How that cannot be a a production fault was beyond me. Misting turbo. All not covered. basically it just leaked everywhere. The dealer that i purchase it from was so un helpful and rude. I really hope you do not have this experience.
I was 26 and had a Granada like that on a Y plate. V6 was so smooth to drive. Really long legs on the motorway. Loved it and miss it now as cars are so dull these days
My uncle had one of these as a company car and turned up with it at my nans house when we were visiting and took me for a spin , what a car the thing that stuck in my mind was the electric sunroof which he closed as we going down the A1 at about 90 and the feeling that all the air in the car was being sucked out ,I was about ten and said that was the car I wanted then by the time you grow up they are obsolete , closest I got was a sierra sapphire nice car at the time but not quite the same .
I had what must have been one of the last ever registered. C reg 2.8i Ghia X in Midnight Blue metallic, fitted an Autoplas black louvre to the rear windscreen. It looked very cool. Never had any problems at all with it in 4 years of ownership, 3 years from new when I bought it for £4700 in 1988, 50 miles everyday 7 days a week, went like dung off a fork, but it was a thirsty beast, never got more than 24.3 MPG no matter what. Sold it in 1992 for £3250 C977 EMG.
In my days of ownership of the Big G as I called mine, no one took me, specially on a motoway 🤭 bad boy back then I used to tailgate and flash till they moved then I was gone 🤭 yes I was stupid then, now I do 30mph in me little Aygo 🤣
The highest.... was the Ghia X.... Executive.... full leather.... aircon.... electric heated seats..... leccy sunroof. You couldnt get better. They are like hens teeth...and to top it off is the sound the 2.8 makes...... even when it cranks over 🤩🤩
@@AndyK.1as i explained the highest was a Ghia X Executive... it had leather. Those 2 are just Ghia X's.... and this ones not an injection either... the injections were out before this on a Mk2 Granny...even cowleys Red T reg was a 2.8 injection 🤩
Auto Tek is right. I have a period brochure with options list and the Ghia X Executive had leather as standard and velour as a no-cost option. For what it's worth I prefer velour.
Had 4 of these in my late 20s early 30s, 3 in gloss black, one in bronze, Stunning cars and i really would love another but very few and far between now
My dad ran Ghia X in 78 he swapped for new Rover SDI V8 unfortunately it broke down on way home, power steering, Windows, brakes, all failed in first month, year later went back to Granada
That's lovely, you dont have to be In your thirties to go for these , when I was 23 I went to the Isle of man for a short break i spotted a beautiful metallic blue 28 gl manual for sale done a deal and brought it home to Ireland, totally random purchase 😄
Had a few of these in the 90s when they were cheap , what a motor , and believe me I kept up with the boys with the XR2I , XR3I , ASTRA GTE , even raced a Escort RS !! 🤣👍
I do like these Mk2 Granadas, especially the 2.8i Ghia X & 2.8 injection, quick they weren't. The 2.8 carb auto, like this one, did 0-60 in 11.2 secs. Manual 2.8i was 8.9 secs, which is a bit more respectible.
@@lewis72 By today's standards its not huge power for a 2800cc V6 but for the day that was a quick car! Today a 180 BHP Mondeo will only manage 0-60 in about 8.5sec, it certainly wouldn't disgrace itself keeping up with modern traffic.
@@AJ-tj7jm It was the old-skool autos that sapped the power. Mondeo's probably heavier than a Mk2 Granada; they really didn't weight much at all, even though they looked quite hefty.
@@AJ-tj7jm By most accounts, that 2.8 Cologne V6 was a crap engine by 1983. What it did have going for it was reliability. It's a ferrous donkey, so few issues with overheating or blocks cracking but an all-iron pushrod V6 was hardly going to set the automotive world alight with advances powertrain design by then.
@@lewis72 Agreed that said in the capri with that engine was and still is enormous fun to drive, great distinctive exhaust note too. 130hp is nothing by todays standards but in a car that's no where near as heavy as a modern car they still keep up and even embarrass a few pulling away from the lights. In a way the simple engineering adds to their charm as an enthusiast can take care of all its servicing needs in the driveway.
That's a beauty - that colour (Crystal Green I think) suited them and the late mk 5 Cortinas so well. I think A reg is a bit late for it to be Cowley's car though - and he'd have demanded a bottle of scotch was thrown in with the sale :) I think Bodie and Doyle ended up each with a Capri and a couple of the actual cars used in the series survive.
I had one. It was a A reg 1984 model. Metallic blue with contrasting interior. The big shock came when it needed new tyres. The Ghia X had those Michelin metric tyres fitted. Always wanted to change up to the Scorpio 4x4 that my mate had....
With that WC Essex registration, I wouldn’t be surprised if that was a Ford Motor Co car originally. Growing up in Essex, both my parents worked for Ford, and a kid at school’s Dad designed the XR3 ‘handle spoiler’. They had 4 Fords at a time. A top of the range Granada. xR3i Convertible. Escort estate, and Fiesta. Sales are based on registrations, so this was a way of boosting sales figures and supplying dealers with nearly new cars for approved used. 😀
Two colleagues had the "ultimate Granada" back in SA. Both had the Perana version built in SA by Basil Green with the V8 Mustang motor. One was a manual and the other was an auto. The one was eventually replaced by another SA "home grown special", the BMW 745 with the M1 motor. A big beast that did surprisingly well on the track. It was BMW's fastest 7 series by far.
3 years ago I bought an extremely rust free Sud from Oudtshoorn. Every now and again these gems from SA pop up, still going strong due to even better climate than California. Oudtshoorn, a third the rainfall of California. Hopefully some of these rare ones you mention will re-appear from a barn 😀
The first car I brought at 18 (in 1984) was a ‘79 T-reg. Diamond White Granada 2.8 Ghia. I then got an ‘81 X-reg. Cardinal Red 2.8 Injection (NOT “Sport” as so many people refer to it incorrectly!). With hindsight, I think I prefer the cleaner lines of the pre-facelift cars with small bumpers but all the MkII Granadas were such elegant and well proportioned cars!
i am a granada mk2 enthusiast and have owned many GL, ghia and ghia X 's. i have several ford cars catalogues from 1978 - 1985 and have read the granada specifications many times. i am 99% sure this is not a genuine ghia X. the X model had air conditioning as standard. in the engine bay the air conditioning pump would be located to the upper front left on the engine as you look from the front just behind the upper radiator hose outlet ( 5;20 - 5;30 in video ) and a solid air tube pipe would curve toward the bulkhead centre to the interior fan blower. the X badge looks wrong on the boot lid ( 3;52 ). lovely car and colour though. wish i could own it.
Nearly bought a Granada 2.8 Ghia X auto for mini cabbing in Coventry.. Beautiful looking car.. Can not remember if it was Dark green or Burgundy.. I've always loved Fords of the 1980's.. If I had big enough garage my 3 cars I would own is this Granada 2.8 Ghia X with a Capri 2.8 Brooklands and a Escort XR3 convertible .. Just for car shows.. So one for dad one for me and my sister But Also estate Granada for general use and family trips
My first car in my 20s was a 2.8 Capri. I had *really* 'made it' in my mid 30s when had the ex-Mayor of Sheffield's 1985 Grosvenor (limosine version of this). That was only 6 years ago. Glorious car. As you would expect, more luxury than even this fine car: shagpile carpets, velour interiour, wood panelling all over, AC, EW, central locking and steering you could drive with a pinkie. Really was like an English land-yacht.
@@dcarbs2979 Then of course it's a Ghia I hope it wasn't luminous green like Del Boys I love Fords I lived in Dagenham till I was 17,so nearly every car was a Ford I learnt to drive in a Fiesta XR2 The Granada Ghia X was the height of luxury I believe you could have leather seats Very smooth and powerful
@@johnhuggins1394 I'd say the coachbuilt limousine was even higher luxury than the Ghia X. Custom order only. Back to Capris, and Ghias were only made in 2.0 and 3.0 before 1981. 2.8s replaced 3.0 in 1981. I have leather seats, but full leather wasn't a standard option. They were only available as standard in the 280, and possibly Tickford.
I remember my dad bought one of these brand new and the year he bought it my dad took us to Ireland me and my sister we were 12 and 13 and 4 adults..I never forget on the way home everyone was asleep apart from me and me dad driving and he was racing another car and I remember looking at the speedo and we were doing 130 miles an hour with six people full of luggage etc...What a beast she was until he drove under a lorry in it a year later and writ it off lol
Absolutely stunning condition. My Dad had a 2.8 GL Granada when was 15 I was hoping Dad may of kept it until I was at least 17/18, Being old to drive. But, sadly my Dad traded it in for a Cortina estate, because we used to camping a lot at tge time. I was gutted he got rid of tge classic Granada 😩. This beauty here in your vudeo takes me back to those days. Thank you for sharing. Very jealous 😁 lol
In the 90's I bought a 2.8 Ghia X estate from my boss for 800 pounds. I used to say to my friends it is a Mercedes with a Ford badge! Sheer luxury and power.
Had a Y plate Champagne gold 2.3 GL, lovely car to drive, and definitely possessed the heaviest bonnet I've ever known on a car, proper made tank of a car.
Most people won't remember how cool it was to be dropped off to school in one, from '79 Dad had a 2.3L, 2,3LX, Renault 30 tx, back to Mk3 Granada 2.8i GL which was very rare, Volvo 760GLE which lasted about a month then 2.9i ghia X (which were pretty cheap by then- scorpio was the daddy). Loved them. But... he should have listened to me and bought an integrale.
Nice…but not at todays ridiculous fuel prices 🤦♂️ Mate had one back in the day and it was a thirsty beast …. But was a superb car and went like the proverbial off a shovel
The posh versions of those early eighties Ford's were the stuff of dreams to my teenage self growing up in Surrey Suburbia. The interiors are so much nicer than modern coal hole black interiors with the coloured velour upholstery.
I thought I saw Candor Motors on the folder. They were based in Colchester sadly now known as Lookers Ford. I brought a Ford Orion from Candors in 1988 so i had the exact same plastic folder.
I owned a Granada like that in station version a 1982 2.8i ghia in the same color, i loved that car! it is the only car i'have owned i still miss, but thanks to changing tax rules for classic cars here in the Netherlands from zero tax it went to almost 500 euro each 3 months running on LPG, a thing i couldn't afford they are a dream to drive only the sunroof was not electric operated full options for the rest, airco cruise, heated seats that was a expensive car when new. Being a Ford fan is a incurable disease.
My boss had one of these and when I worked for him I was only 17 and he would say , go to chippy and get grub for dinner,he threw me the keys and said take my car , I was in my element , I thought wow.
Hey a superb aspirational car back in its days & a big car. As a kid i imagined owning one when i could drive. But looking at videos on YT of US cars from 60's, 70's & 80's. Its apparent just how unadvanced & lacking in equipment & safety tech levels cars for us Brits really were.
I worked on these in Ford main agent, but I have never seen since the 80s a Granada Ghia X with the leather seats and extra seat cushings sewn into the leather seats
The Granada Ghia X were the height of luxury Could you have leather seats? Being brought up in Dagenham, the Ford factory was only up the road from where I lived It has been closed now for several years, but every two cars, were Fords Corrina's, Sierras,Escorts, and Fiestas were very popular And on August the first, new cars were seen with the new plate Granada's were very powerful and smooth, especially the Ghia and Ghia X Lovely cars Wonder how much they would fetch now?
The ghia xpack missing xpack mud flaps and roof sun visor 2 stunning ford gransdas had 84 28 I ghia xpack in green when I was 31 Derek you alway get great motors
What day do i have to ,ome to buy this anyone please , friday or saterday i am quite old but want this ,i dont want to arrive friday and its saterday ,i need help its mine anyway .
I agree. The mk 2 ghia x was the car.My god Ford lost the plot in the coming years. These were up against jags and did a good job.So sad banger racers took them all because they did rot out after just a few years and were ten a penny in the scrappers yards. The floorpans rotted for fun.Same with mk4 cortinas .But Ford has never made a statement like the 2.8 ghia x mk 2 since.Period.
@@nickyboy. Yes crystal green, lovely colour, but for some reason not that common. Fiesta ghias, Escorts, Cortinas and Granada used it but never saw a Capri in the colour.
A little bit poor of you to say that you were going to remove the driver’s handbook as “it’s worth money just on its own”. Personally I think the new owner will be disappointed not to receive that?🤔
ive got it now friday Au,tion most people at work , saterday au,tion .im old .And is it saterday or sunday ,im old .ill just buy the green granada now £5000.or do i arrive friday or saterday to buy the granada im old .
AFV 550Y was mine in Stratos Silver. Cracking car, shame about the 3 speed auto box. Fancied a 2.8 Sport (manual) after it. Not going to happen now for sensible money.
Would you buy a 2nd hand car from this man? Reckon he would have given Arthur Daly a run for his money. Just the right amount of stumbles and hesitation to make you think he’s just an amateur dealer. The blackened nail could be courtesy of a previous customer who wanted to know where the Handbook was, or maybe it’s genuine.
Sorry been watching Mathewson's for a while and my message is with out bad feelings or harm. But this company charges 20 % sale fee as well as buyers fee and one episode scanned a desk in there office . With a note of pick up fee of £1000 fee yes the car’s do bring back memories but most of the stock is crap. Only one winner is Mathewson's the program is very over rated with Derrick and all his car’s. As well as his fee for the television show think people need a reality check.
