The "Iceman"...what a game! I was a big time UK fan until this game. U of L grabbed my heart in this game and I have been true Red since then...Go Cards!
Greatest game of my childhood. The people of Louisville had a parade after and my mother and I rode down Broadway real slow as people rode on top of their cars and honked their horns
I was there and it was great!!!!!!!!!!!!! What people don't realize is the fact that UofL has 4 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS and uk ONLY HAS 5 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. The NCAA title was not considered a NATIONAL TITLE the first 2 times that uk won them. REAL college basketball historian know that!
When Louisville won this game in 1983, they should have left that taste in Kentucky's mouth and refused the series. That would have stuck in the crawl of UK fans for eternity.
Best Louisville team NOT to win a championship, but I will always remember beating UK in the 'Original' Dream Game. Ohhh.....the satisfaction; the memories.
It's sometimes nice to watch games without a shot clock, the decisions whether or not to play against a zone, to push pace or not, etc, in other words, the chess match. Not saying I want no clock today, but I wish they would have left it at 35 seconds, giving the less talented teams a chance to play at a different pace. The 30 second clock has homogenized the game.
@kingadalou -shot clock was expirimental form the 1982-83 through the 1984-85 seasons Meaning it was used for the regular season but not the NCAA tournament. Full use came in 1985-86 for all games including the NCAA tournament. The tree point shot became used full time in 1986-87
Last year's team couldn't hold a candle to 83's version of Louisville Cardinals. This team had NO WEAKNESSES. Far more athletic than 2008-09' squad; had one of best guard tandems in entire country (Milt Wagner & Lancaster Gordon); formidable frontcourt in the McCray Bros. & Charles Jones. It took one of the best, most athletic teams in the 20th century (Houston Cougars) to prevent them from winning it all.
No matter what uk fans want to proclaim, they will never know nor understand the magic in Cardinal Country or the class and poise of the Cardinal nor the fans!!!!!Also, No matter how many win's,Championships, or final 4's Ky has, they will always have that "bad taste" in their widdle mouth's!....For many years the world wondered who was the best, UofK or Uofl and in 1983 the world found out....... It was......The University of Louisville!........Enough said!
That 1983 LOUISVILLE might have not won the championship, but however they might have won something more important they beat KENTUCKY to advance to the final four and restart a great rivalry. Not many fouls in the overtime, what a lot of dunks in this overtime. This was kharma for JOE B. HALL for being a yellow of a man by not playing louisville.
I'll always believe that was our greatest team. The only problem was the force called Houston that got in the way. You'll never find a regional final with this kind of rivalry again. I still can't believe it took an NCAA tournament matchup for Kentucky to play us.
Joe Hall should have inserted another ball handler when UofL went to the press in overtime. He should have had Beal, Minnifield, and Master as the ball handlers. Beal, Minnifield, Master, Hord, and Walker should have been the 5 for Kentucky. Louisville just beat them down the court. Joe Hall made a lot of personel mistakes and failed to reconize what Crum was doing before the game got out of hand.
Wasn't this the game that Kentucky's governor at the time, John Y. Brown Jr., had a suit made that was half blue, half red since he wouldn't take sides? BTW, I was born in Louisville, and I love both teams but my heart will always bleed blue #BBN
crum might have been the second greatest coach of all time, his mentor of course being #1, imo, oh by the way, how good was Houston? They wore this Louisville team to a frazzle and won going away with 13 dunks, I don’t give a damn about the next game
I honestly told my daddy that Jim masters shouldn't have hit that shot because now they must be punished! I was a huge wrestling fan at that time too. Lol
@toddky32 that is why your world is called make believe and UofL won the NAIB and NIT and when UofL won them they were bigger than the NCAA tourny so that would make 4 titles for UofL
How bout that triple OT thriller atween Minnesota and Iowa at the old Iowa Fieldhouse on 2/27/1982 where the Gophers robbed the Hawkeyes with a win after a phantom foul 40 feet from the basket? Why, that ref gotta been a democrat!
Man! I forgot how bad the Cardinal Birds costume looked back then...sure glad they changed that, but I think there was a female doing the bird at this time and was too small for the suit.
That is the worst ball handling I have ever seen. There were a couple of passes that were just thrown directly to a Louisville player without a deflection or another Kentucky player close.
@OndrausCissell What are you smoking hook me up ? besides 80 & 86 what years did Louisville win the title. In my make believe world Kentucky has won 30 championships in a row GO CATS !!!!!!!!!!
