1983 Quarter- A Lot More Valuable Than You May Realize

Type: Washington Quarter
Year: 1983
Mint Mark: P
Face Value: 0.25 USD
Total Produced: 673,535,000
Silver Content: 0%
Numismatic Value: 25 cents to $51.00
Value: As a rough estimate of this coins value you can assume this coin in average condition will be valued at somewhere around 25 cents, while one in certified mint state (MS+) condition could bring as much as $51 at auction. This price does not reference any standard coin grading scale. So when we say average, we mean in a similar condition to other coins issued in 1983, and mint state meaning it is certified MS+ by one of the top coin grading companies.
Additional Info: Look for the mint mark on the Washington Quarter on the front (or Obverse) of the coin.

I was raised in the 80’s and the quarters you find with dark surfaces or even red at times, is paint or marker. The owners of the arcades would paint or mark their ‘ House Coins’. If a machine ate a players quarter and did not return it, the owner of the joint would put one of their ‘House Coins in the machine to cover the loss. They also had little contests or challenges that would be payed to you with house coins. When the owner emptied out the machine the colored or marked coins would be separated and given back to the house. I worked in a bowling alley in 1985 and we used a lot of these house coins.

Also.. In 50s..60s 70s n 80s...bar maids would put lipstick on their quarters so they get them back from jukebox.. I remember getting to color them while my mom worked my uncles bar... Fun times!

Were you listening to the video? Not just any 1983 quarter will be that valuable.. it has to be one that is certified mint ?67? condition i think.. which would even have to be in better condition than the second quarter he shows as an example that looks amazing! I cant imagine anyone finding /having a quarter from 1983 thats in better condition than that second one he shows off.
@toddly1133
@toddly1133 4 года назад
In one word "scarcity". He said that there were only 11 of those quarters that graded that high bc in 1983 the mints didn't put out great coins in that era and the circulated ones were tossed into arcade games, (parking meters, telephone booth phones, candy machines, cigarette machines, change machines, token machines etc...). Then there is the regular wear and tear on them. I guess ya had to be there.

certain coins sell for such a high price due to the fact that someone wants it for their collection . just due to the fact that a small number of the coins sold for that price does not guarantee that any more will be wanted , its a way to get more people to buy the coins for a crazy price thinking that they will be able to sell them and make a profit . its a scam . just like when people put up a wanted ad , wanting a item just like the item they are selling , after they have talked with a number of people that they are willing to pay a crazy high price on the said item , they then sell the item and then when the person that bought the item calls them on there other number " the wanted ad number " he says i already found a different item , and then the buyer is stuck with the almost worthless item .

@billmich123
@billmich123 6 лет назад
Edgardo T. Lugo if this is true, then you have the "spitting Eagle" variety. It was a die crack at the beak going down. Called the spitting eagle, it looks more like its drooling or in your hip eagles case, " smoking a blunt". Good news if it is though, because you'll be rolling many of those for the money you get on that coveted collector coin.

I've coin searched probably 3 or 4 thousand dollars in quarters in the last 3 months or so. I've found about 60 or so 1983 quarters. P and D mints. I also have 4 or 5 uncirculated sets still in the plastic. The only ones I found in searching (not plastic) were fairly worn but a couple or so are in pretty good shape...not MS or anything but maybe somewhat valuable. I still save them all. Just in case.

Shaney That's a good possibility but I think I will hang onto them for a while. Who knows....maybe value will better down the road. Recently (last couple months) I started searching nickles. The first $100 box I searched revealed 4 Buffaloes, one '43 War nickle, and a Canadian. Not bad! I was really happy to see the first Buffalo but when I found another and then another and.....well, I was excited! Never thought I would get a bunch of collectibles from one batch. Now the last couple boxes didn't really have much of anything so they were a let down. Guess I just got really lucky with that one box.

It's actually not valuable at all. However if you have a roll of any 82 or 83 coins that have never been opened or circulated and you send it for grading and anything comes back graded at MS 67 or higher, it may be valuable to a collector that wants a high graded example for their collection. Circulated coins are worthless pretty much. They won't grade high. The thing with 82 and 83 is there were no mint sets issued those years. Collectors that want high grade examples have to piece it together from circulation rolls. Most "uncirculated" coins will grade MS60-63, and occasionally something higher, with MS67 and above becoming extremely rare. The uncirculated sets being sold for 82 and 83 P+D wouldn't ever grade above a MS65 or the people selling them would have gotten they graded and sold them as their grades. Sill though they sell those low uncirculated sets of each year P+D for like $200. You might send in a roll of 83s if you find it or someone held it, and have them all grade MS61-63 due to nicks and dings and never even get the grading fee back on them because nobody is gonna want them for their collection. All 82 and 83 u.s. circulation coins are like this because there was no mint released set those years besides the proof set. High mint state examples are a premium and hard to come by for a collector, anything else is pocket change. MS65 and MS66 have value too though, but you aren't going to recover your grading fees even sending in dozens hoping to get them to grade one out highly. Anyways, thought I'd explain the situation a bit better than the poster of this video. He doesn't explain WHY it was a $1900.00 coin. Basically if there had been mint sets released that year there would be more higher grade examples and only MS69 and MS70 would be the valuable ones to collectors. They absolutely have to be uncirculated to even have a shot. No wear or environmental damage, only slight nicks and dings (called slight bag marks) but nothing blatant and distracting from it looking perfect. Neither example shown in this video would be considered uncirculated.

At AUCTION they can sell for $$$$Thousands if they are graded MS-68 or above that mark. It all depends on the Coin Collector(s) that want them bad enuff.. or like if 62 & 64 is someon'es BIRTH YEAR. That's HOW coins sell for crazy buckwild surreal prices on Ebay, Etsy, or at well-known Professional Auctions! People want them really really bad, so they'll spare no cost, even if it cost them the World hahaha A Non-error 1959 penny in MS-68 condition sold for $84,000 USD at Auction not long ago... Others on record sold for $48k, $48,300, 5k, 10k, etc etc... WHY? HOW?? Not aluminum - silver.
@reparsed

Definitely not silver. It's noticeably less dense than a quarter and is easily bent with just your fingers.

The U.S. silver coins pre-1965 make a brilliant ringing sound when they're dropped on a hard surface. The later coins (copper-nickel) make a dull thud. An aluminum coin will also make a thud. Try it yourself.

I have a 1980 nickel that appears to be in mint condition. What location were such proof coins minted that year? This one has no stamp or it is not visible and I can even clearly see Monticello printed beneath the symbol of that building on the back.

Does the letter matters on the lower right to know the worth. And what if it's in ok condition. So the 1983 D 1983 is worth that amount
@theresalwaysaprice5413
@theresalwaysaprice5413 5 лет назад
Yes the letter at the lower right means everything, It is where it was minted
@kennypost8598
@kennypost8598 5 лет назад
The only thing that matters is the amount of coins that was produced by the mint in that year. The lower the amount, the more valuable. According with the condition of the coin or if there were errors.

Some of the comments on these pages crack me up. People say they have these very ultra common coins and everyone thinks they are all like gold in worth. Try going to ebay and you will see what real people are ACTUALLY paying. Another somewhat reliable resource is coin trackers.

Coin collecting is getting dangerous. I came across a respected seller at a coin show that had gotten duped by a counterfeit coin probably made in China that only had a value of about $20. That is a lot of effort by someone to counterfeit a coin that is only worth $20. These days I bring calipers and scale with me to double check coins and the size and weight were off on this coin.
