CLIP DESCRIPTION:
O'Brien (Richard Burton) explains the party rules to Winston (John Hurt).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
1984 is the second film version of George Orwell's cautionary novel. Though the events described by Orwell did not come to pass in the real 1984, the film's producers maintained a level of verisimilitude by shooting the scenes on the exact dates described in the novel. Otherwise, it's the same basic story: Winston Smith (John Hurt), a bureaucratic flunky living in the totalitarian state of Oceania, breaks the law by daring to fall in love with Ministry of Truth worker Julia (Suzanna Hamilton). Attempting to escape, Winston and Julia are tracked down by the Thought Police. Both must be "re-educated" into loving the State -- and by extension, the shadowy dictator Big Brother.
CREDITS:
TM & © MGM (1984)
Cast: John Hurt, Richard Burton
Director: Michael Radford
Producers: Al Clark, John Davis, Robert Devereux, Simon Perry, Marvin J. Rosenblum
Screenwriters: George Orwell, Michael Radford

Richard Burton, amazing actor, tragic figure crippled by self-inflicted failings, years after his prime still managed at the end of his life to breathe life into this performance and be human and monstrous at the same time. He really is captivating in it. R.I.P. Richard, hopefully you found whatever was lacking for you here. And thank you for this final, great, film performance.

What's interesting here (and something I'm surprised more people don't notice) is that O'Brien....never really proves Winston wrong. He just says the Proles are "helpless animals", "we control life, at all levels", and that's it. He never completely diffuses Winston's points, he just makes them seem insignificant and and subtly sidesteps them. So while O'Brien makes it seem like INGSOC and Big Brother will reign for all time, this conversation could be read as an ideological victory for Winston that O'Brien doesn't realize because he's too steeped in The Party's propaganda.
@natalieanimal4063
@natalieanimal4063 6 лет назад
Hm, an interesting point. When I read the book, I thought that, while O'Brien does make some sense (or at least makes it seem so), he sounds like he really has no idea what he is saying or why- which, again, is what the Party wants. Is he really any more intelligent than Parsons? I mean Syme was more intelligent, and they eliminated him. As I already commented somewhere: "I could levitate, but the Party doesn't want me to"? They don't want you to because you can't. Or at least because at that point in the conversation he wouldn't believe you. It's like waiting till the sunset and pretending the Sun set because you told it to. Wow, I have a lot of time for arguing with O'Brien.
@jamesdevine1246
@jamesdevine1246 6 лет назад
I think the point of showing that conversation is to show just how much O'Brien, and by extension INGSOC, thinks they can get away with their power fantasies, and to also give an insight into just how extensively brainwashed someone can be in a totalitarian state. In Nazi Germany, Hitler was apparently a divine savior, in Soviet Russia, Stalin was apparently an all-knowing scholar of everything, and in Oceania, Big Brother can apparently see and hear everyone at once. What's outrageous to us is simple fact to them, because without the existence of empirical evidence and sources, everything becomes subjective.
@natalieanimal4063
@natalieanimal4063 6 лет назад
That makes sense. So, I guess Orwell didn't really believe the Party would rule forever? He was trying to represent O'Brien as an equally delusional person as Parsons or something? After reading for the first time, I was like: well dang it, Orwell, you are rooting for the bad guys, but it feels hopeful to think differently. Wow, sorry if I'm boring you with my replies, i love to talk about the book. I'll shut up if you're bored...
@jamesdevine1246
@jamesdevine1246 6 лет назад
No I've read this book six times and am obsessed with it; your conversation is welcome haha. There is a hidden similarity between O'Brien and Parsons yes, just that O'Brien is more sociopathic and sophisticated. In terms of INGSOC, I don't think Orwell could practically believe that any political organization could rule forever, no matter how brutal or intelligent. But to O'Brien, who lives and breathes INGSOC, and the average Outer Party member who is monitored every day? The Party's rule is, as Winston says, "as unalterable as the sky". Plus, it's entirely possible that Orwell, while obviously writing INGSOC as a stand in for the Stalinist period in the Soviet Union, had a higher purpose for the Party to represent the extreme of ANY political organization and the culture they create with their clashes with other organizations. In our world, our INGSOC is our neverending tendency to hate, to generalize, to want violence, to topple each other, and to bow before some Big Brother that we see on a pedestal. IM NOT POINTING A FINGER AT ANY ONE POLITICAL PARTY WHEN I SAY THIS, but I'm saying that maybe Orwell saw INGSOC everywhere in our world.
@natalieanimal4063
@natalieanimal4063 6 лет назад
OK then, it's one of my favorite books too, so...I guess this will go on until someone gets bored. Yeah, I suppose O'Brien is a representation of a typical, orthodox Inner Party guy while Parsons is the same for the Outer Party. And it feels great to see someone understands this is about every ideology that is somehow oppressive, when I read political comments about this story it's just...just thank you for understanding. And I believe that's what Orwell meant to say, he did mention and imply things about socialism, Nazism, the Inquisition...many different kinds of politics all with the same goal.

This is why he was perfect for rhe role. O'Brien was a broken man inside. A lifetime of living lies that he convinced himself was truth just to retain the privilege of living slightly above the proles (albeit still disposable) has stripped him of any dignity and self respect. O'Brien is probably a bigger alchoholic than Winston. A lot of corporate executive types know that what they are just puppets of greedy corporations yet they press on and self medicate, half convincing themselves that they are part of something great.

One of the reasons why Burton excels particularly in this last, most brutally cynical and parched role, is that, as his diaries (recently published and a dismal read,) reveal, he became grossly embittered and bored with every aspect of his life and the world around him. He hated acting, he felt his career had been an intellectual waste and his misery was amplified by his alcoholism. The mixture of cultivation, charisma, cruelty and deadness-in-life that he brings to O'Brien is entirely his own and is scarcely acting.

Many people who read the book or watched the film(s) of 1984 fail to understand the meaning or rather the ideology of the party, this failure comes from the natural assumption that one or another "depiction of xxxx" is presented. By the xxxx one can see communism, nazism, or any kind of other ideology. However Orwell deliberately presents both extremes in the book at least as being inferior to the Party. The Party is a distillation of not politics of a certain kind into some kind of further development of such, but abandonment of all besides the "method" itself. The Party does not care for some specific political system or ideology, it does not at all care for the wellbeing of some group above another, even of the Party itself. The Party is only concerned with power - power over both the real world and more importantly over the perception of reality and the way of thinking. Hence the Thought Police focuses on "cleaning" the mind of its captors, hence the "boot stomping on the human face forever". It is the power itself that is of any relevance, and from the power comes the extremely simplified concept of using that power over everyone and everything. Imagine a car race is being conducted - some complete to show off, some compete for the prize money, some compete to show off or even for the pleasure of the thrill that racing gives. In that way if "party" is a driver, it is to be part of the race for the sake of racing. In this way the whole world view is narrowed down for doing something for the sake of doing it, as everything else becomes redundant. In a sense this is idealism boiled down to the bare bones of an idea itself, where neither motivation in its common form nor actual reasoning is needed. This is one but few philosophical "nuclear bombs" Orwell drops with the book.

@@gx2music no, I do not agree. Blair and other career politicians are in for some gain or the other, which most time is personal. The Party abandons everything personal - in fact, it seeks to destroy the person and i individuality. To destroy it - and to re-make it, in whatever way it sees fit. The individual becomes just another hinder that needs to be completely wiped out, and if allowed to exist, then only in the way Party allows it. Imagine a collective power where the power is the goal and overriding everything becomes a part of the power that it projects.

I think what is probably forgotten here by readers and movie watchers (myself included), is that O'Brien himself is included in the system, despite his high rank in the Party hierarchy. Winston was a lower ranking official, but people in the News Department write the news, and nobody can dispute what they write. So while interrogating Winston, O'Brien is not some superman dictating how the world works, because the person he's interrogating has had an equally large impact on his own beliefs. Touché.

Both of them must remember the picture, because the Party might change its stance again. After that the delusion is to not remember. He's really accusing Winston of not using doublethink. I don't see any way around that one. The Party does this back and forth switch to test it's power, and we're trying to prove that the Party is lying? In the book there's (apparently) a scene where a speaker switches from war with Eurasia to Eastasia, and the angry crowd tears down the false banners. If the people reacted in that way, then they're REALLY trying not to remember. Then again, O'Brien burned the picture. He did not remember the picture, did he remember burning it? Burning something? How far does it go? What if you forget something for real, and can't remember it again when you're supposed to?

O’Brien talks a good game. But don’t be mistaken. He has only one purpose here: to completely break Winston. To do that, there is no lie he will not tell convincingly, no depravity he will not stoop to. He will even morph the victim’s sense of reality to break his spirit. That is O’Brien’s job. If he didn’t succeed, he would soon be the one on the rack. All the persecutors of the past used the exact same methods. O’Brien doesn’t tell Winston that. And some of their victims prevailed even under the most horrific horrors and lingering deaths. And yes, they all used psychological horror on their victims as much as physical. And sometimes, even that wasn’t enough. I have read the real-life accounts of people who actually went through torments like this and lived to tell about it, even preserved their principles. One such example was a man named Leopold Engleitner. If you read up on him, you will understand what helped him through and what Winston didn’t have. Orwell was wrong when he implied that persecution such as this can never been endured. It can, but it does take something deeper than ourselves. A private reserve of power that the enemy can never touch.

@chriscolabella880
@chriscolabella880 4 года назад
At last, another heretic who takes this view! I disagree with most of the other comments. To me the point and the real darkness of the end of the book is that O'Brien, Winston's intellectual superior, is right and Winston is wrong. If the party control the material world, records and memory then they do in fact control objective reality. Winston's version of what is real is far less true than everybody else's. The true darkness is the utter eradication of the individual into a group consciousness at every intellectual and ultimately emotional level.
@natalieanimal4063
@natalieanimal4063 3 года назад
@@chriscolabella880 I actually agree with this, at least partly; my comments elsewhere may have given another impression- the book's topic is very complex and I sometimes disagree with my own opinion, so to speak! I (and I think many others) don't really disagree with this, but Ingsoc's disregard of ethics- the use of violent methods and not allowing people to believe anything else, not allowing anyone's truth to be formed spontaneously. For someone I like and consider wise, Winston does think many things I disagree with, those you mention. In a way even both can be right at the same time- but both are kind of self-righteous. One catch is that there really aren't more people who see a different reality than Winston- those who haven't been 'cured' are a huge majority. O'Brien keeps saying Winston is the last, but everyone else they haven't arrested yet should count (of course, this means people who don't already believe Ingsoc, but I feel there's many, like Julia says). So statistics still say their reality is in the majority. I actually believe, maybe not that there's nothing outside our consciousness, but that we can't know if there is- again, my thing with the Party is things done forcibly and for a cause I find morally wrong. I'm technically not against doublethink or its plausibility as long as it's consensual- it's the same thing I do when I say to myself 'I don't feel bad' and then I don't in case of basically any issue I can't solve (until I feel better).

@@flipierfatalbina4757 Orwell was a socialist yes, but he despised totalitarianism. Bernie Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez are faux socialists. Like how Bernie says to tax the billionaires, while he himself has 3 houses and hasn't worked a day in his life, passing only 3 laws for the state he represents. In addition, how they constantly spew the same, "climate change" talking points, yet use private jets and plane to travel which, hypocritically, cause the very thing they are preaching out against.
