Tiger Stadium, Ernie behind the Mic in the broadcasting booth, Robert Taylor singing the national anthem and the 1984 Tigers!. Wow... It just didn't get any better then that... and never will ever again. :(

It was kinda a strange season they had. They had the hot start 35-5. Then their next 99 games they weren't very good going 53-46 or .535 ball. Then they finished the last few weeks pretty strong and obviously cleaned up in the playoffs. Can't remember if they had a lot of injuries that might explain that 99 game stretch.

I did that caricature of Howard Cosell for a friend who's mom was going to the game! Watched the game when it was on and couldn't believe they showed it, thank God for RU-vid all these years later!

SOOOOO great to hear that beautiful baritone voice of the singing plumber, Bob Taylor. He rivals any anthem singer in any city & stadium/arena!

Although the Tigers blew out the Royals in Game One, this was actually a pretty exciting & competitive ALCS. Game two went into extra innings and this game was an awesome pitcher’s duel.

For Sparky Anderson this would be his 11th consecutive postseason win going back to game 7 of the '75 World Series against the Red Sox and then swept the Phillies in the NLCS 3-0 then swept the Yankees in the World Series 4-0 to go 7-0 in the postseason. In fact Sparky Andersen teams won 15 out of 16 postseason games. The 1984 Tigers were one of the great teams in baseball history.

Thank you for posting. Wow, it is amazing that difference the HD has made on viewing because it brings the clarity needed for enjoyment. I am not taking anything away from the game, but I notice things like that.

Two stadiums named after their teams? What?

Milt Wilcox once lost a perfect game at Comiskey Park with 2 outs in the 9th inning. I think it was in 1983.

Even though this series ended in 3 games they had plans for a 5th game. If the series had gone the full five. Games the game would have been played at 1 PM ET instead of prime time because there was a presidential debate scheduled that night between President Reagan and former Vice President Mondale. ABC felt they needed to show the debate to show their commitment to public service even the though the 1984 Presidential race wasn’t much of a race at all.

Milt Wilcox gave his career up for the ‘84 team. He should have had shoulder surgery before the season. He had numerous cortisone shots during the season. Afterwards , he was never the same again.

1984 Tigers were a great team, and the Royals won the WS the following year. Btw, who was the genius who ordered the police on the field in the top of the EIGHTH? If you thought it were absolutely necessary, bring them in with two outs in the NINTH!! And then, inexplicably, when the game ended, they all moved far away from the wall, defeating the purpose of their being there in the first place!! Just sayin’.

I believe this was Howard Cosell's last baseball broadcast as Tim McCarver replaced him in 1985
@paulsonj72
@paulsonj72 4 года назад
It was. Also during this series Al and Howard did not get along AT ALL. In game 2 there were several instances when Howard tried to goad Al into saying something. Al mostly ignored him.

It was his last playoff broadcast, but he still did regular season games in ‘85, but things were VERY strained between him and Michaels and Palmer, after Michaels said he didn’t want to work with him anymore after this series and the producers at least agreed to lay down the law with Cosell that he couldn’t drink before or during the games. They finally fired him when his book came out and replaced him with Tim McCarver. And the history they had with how toxic Cosell made their booth explains why it was such a brilliant booth once McCarver joined them. Just must have been such a breath of fresh air for Michaels and Palmer to finally work with someone like McCarver who worked WITH them, not against them, wanted to be there, and was like a little kid relishing the joy of talking about something he loved with people he liked to be around.

@@ADEAL918 McCarver was great his first couple of year announcing with Michaels and Palmer. Sometime during his stint at CBS he become irritating and continued to be irritating till he retired from Fox.
@ADEAL918

@@BAYAREA-kd1ig but my point is could that be because once they split him up from Michaels and Palmer, he never had other partners after that who he could play off of the way he did with those two guys?
