Since my teens I've been a big fan of Orwell- I've read and studied his lesser known novels as well as his most famous works, 1984 and Animal Farm (such as Homage to Catalonia, Down and Out in Paris and London, Coming up for Air, etc) as well as most of his essays. It's such a loss Orwell died so young, as he would have had so much to say about the events of the next 30 years, such as the Cold War and nuclear age, the Korean and Vietnam wars, the Middle East wars, the decline of his beloved England as a world power, and cultural events such as the Beatles and the rise of the counter-culture. We'll never know...

Christopher Hitchens, well known writer, news reporter and athiest wrote a treatise on him. U might want to look for it. Hitchens wrote many books including "God is Not Great". I read 1984 in middle school during the Cold War. It resonated with me deeply. I would recommend Aldous Huxleys' book Brave New World if you havent. I fear America is becoming a blend of the messages foung within those 2 books. Altho, since Trump, I fear we are heading towards an authoritarian future. Should that become reality then we are doomed as the last Democratic Republic and China would assend to world economic dominance. Thanks for this report.

Orwell saw past our outer shells, and was able to discern ulterior motives. I feel this is especially true of his political essays, where he details specific behaviors, behaviors that still exist and effect us even now. It's hard to see this in ourselves, but it is there.

Winston states that he believes it must be some time around 1984 because he remembers the Revelation taking place in his childhood, and he remembers growing up in the 1950's, shortly after the end of World War II. But how reliable is Winst5on's memory really. Is it possible that Winston's childhood was not in the 1950's, but in fact, some other decade. Perhaps he was a child in the late 2020's. We know that the memories of Party members are utterly unreliable. Even Julia has no memory of the change in alliance that had kept them both so busy at work they did not have time to meet for more than a "good day, Comrade" as they passed in the corridor. I think it's possible that Winston has no real idea what decade his childhood too place in. It could have been the 1950's, or the 2020's or even the 2530's. 1984 could be a date which will forever be in the future, even though we, who live in the pre-Revolutionary world "know" it is 2023.

In a way I'm just like Orwell. My worst enemy in all the world is totalitarianism. I believe we all have rights to be ourselves and let others be who they are no matter who they are. The government should mind there own business of what I feel. Thought emotion is not a crime. personality is not a deformity. the only thing that matters is I'm not hurting anyone.

Geez, You mentioned the name of the political party, "Ingsoc" but somehow neglected to mention what that name actually stood for or, how it was derived. The name was an abbreviation of "English SOCIALISM" which is fundamental and essentially to the development of the ideas that evolved throughout the story. I am only at 2:52 minutes into the video but you are already moving on to a more complex evolution of the story in your video without establishing this salient point which in the original book is in fact established early on and gives the reader a certain perspective with which to take up the rest of the story.

Good feedback. My original script had to be condensed for brevity, although you are correct, I could have elaborated more on some of the core foundational principles but then if I did, the video would have been too long for most people's attention spans. My goal was to condense the content down to 10 minutes, to do that, I had to condense a lot of the script, which was closer to 20 minutes long, which was too long in my opinion.

Orwell manifested his hatred of India. 1984 is a caricature of general Indian philosophy experienced at vulgar, unsophisticated level and also in more academic circles. Indian mentality starts with the capacity of holding two logically contradictory beliefs at the same time. He who achieves that first result is deemed on his good way to be saved and become a sage. It is true that it allows a society to be ruled by its criminal elements without any reaction and even without need for a central authority to hold the whole thing.

Because the Republican Party is a bastion of independent, well-informed critical-thinkers who believe that education is vital for a healthy society. Just kidding. Republicans know that education is for fools who don't know any better. They don't need a college degree to teach them that. Diversity and equality just prop up the weakest links. Strength is what matters in the real world. A strong leader will do what's right for the country. A strong leader is worth fighting for. The Republican party upholds the definition of money as free speech in politics and cedes the control of government to those who donate the most money to politicians. Because corporations and the wealthy will always do what's best for the American citizens, and the wealth will trickle down in torrents of prosperity. Republican workers are happy to pay for the infrastructure that allows the wealthy to amass their wealth and keep their wealth. The golden showers will rain down for the party of patriots. God bless the Republican Party.

@@michaelquinones-lx6ks The Democratic Party falls way short on meeting the ideals they profess and the expectations of the voters they represent. There is too much corporate money being distributed as "free speech" and it has corrupted the political process. legislative seats are expensive. The bill is paid by corporate and wealthy donors. Legislative work caters to protecting those donors at the expense of the voters. that's the part that feels like a stab in the back. The Democrats are a disappointment. The alternative is a party that is promoting ignorance, and playing on peoples' fears and prejudices. it is a party that expressly steals from the poor and gives to the rich. It is a party that loudly advocates against workers and "the little guy" on behalf of corporations. It is a party that will actively undermine the government regardless of harm to the nation, simply to try to discredit Democratic opponents. The "party of patriots" is highly destructive to this nation.

Orwell did not invent the practice of Double-think. It is a practice that has always existed and has been used by governments and religions all over the world, even today. It's not something you can accomplish through conscious thought. You can't know you are doing it, and you have to learn to do it before you reach the age of reason. The age of reason is the point when a child become developed enough to use logic and reason to work out for themselves what is true. We can see the effects of double-think in Trump supporters, especially Evangelical Trump supporters. Here is a man who is not even pretending to be a "good Christian" He stands, holding up a Bible that is up-side-down and backwards. When asked if it is his personal Bible he says, "It's a Bible." Why would Trump not claim ownership of the Bible? If he owns a Bible, why borrow one that isn't yours? Yet the Evangelicals love him. It baffles me that religiose people would support such a person. They want to believe that Trump is the next best thing to Jesus Christ, but seeing how the man behaves, he is just the opposite of Jesus.
