1982 model year was the debut of the FXR. I rode one of the first ones in the fall of 1981, right after I bought my first HD, a 1982 FXE. I could appreciate what Harley had done with the new 5 speed, rubber mounted Shovel, which was initially called the Super Glide II, but I wanted that raw original Super Glide experience. I grew up on Hondas and had read all the magazines bad rapping Harleys over the years, so I was prepared for the worst. It was the best bike I'd ever owned, reliable and solid as a tank, It was my sole transportation. Put 80,000 miles on it in three years, just changed fluids and plugs.
