From 1984, the second and final presidential debate between incumbent President Ronald Reagan and former Vice President Walter Mondale, his Democratic challenger. The candidates answered questions from a panel of journalists on defense and foreign policy issues, including U.S. involvement and CIA activities in Central America, negotiations with the Soviet Union on nuclear stockpiles and strategic weapons systems, and fighting terrorism in Lebanon and the broader Middle East. The Republican ticket of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush defeated Walter Mondale and Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro in the general election, winning the popular vote 59 to 41 percent.

one difference between 2024 and 1984 . . . both candidates sit near the extreme of their parties so there is bigger debate and much more at stake than a moderate Democrat and conservative Republican

@@kevintucker466 From my vantage point, it's not that the candidates sit at the extremes but that the country can't figure out which direction it is to take. What does it even mean to be American, what does it mean on the world stage, and what should America become? All questions with very different answers, and I'm not convinced that what is called moderate is truly moderate.

I saw an interview with Geraldine Ferraro and she was asked when she knew the election was over. She said, very early on in the campaign they were in a steel mill and there were Reagan/Bush signs everywhere. She said that she was angry because the union workers were supposed to be their backers, so she asked a man down front why he would vote for Ronald Reagan. The man shouted, "He makes me proud to be an American!" She said, "You just can't beat that".

I was twenty one years old and a freshman at college watching this with some friends. When Reagan said this, we laughed our asses off. The Gipper was still The Gipper. It was something of a relief because the Reagan we saw at the debates in Campaign 84 was a lot different than four years earlier. He stumbled over his words and seemed a little off his game. It kind of reminded me of my grandfather who, at the time, was suffering from Alzheimer’s and would die of it three years later.

What an actor! You just know that his advisors came up with this line in debate prep, and yet he delivered it with such ease that it might as well have been off the top of his head. That’s why Reagan was great, he knew that the President was there to make Americans feel confident and strutting. Bravo.
@jamesgeoffrey6179
@jamesgeoffrey6179 13 дней назад
Actually no, his advisers did NOT come up with that answer. In fact, Reagan's advisers had been debating how Reagan should respond. Then, at one point, he told them, "Don' worry about it. I'll handle it!" Then he never said another thing and his advisers reluctantly dropped the subject in Reagan's presence - though they continued to talk about the age issue among themselves. Sure enough, he came up with that witty reply. Yes, Reagan did have the idea for his reply already in mind. However, it is NOT true that it was an idea that his advisers came up with. In fact, they were really nervous going into that debate and were as caught off guard as Mr. Mondale and the panel.

LOL! I've watched this clip countless times and what makes me laugh is that Regan recognized very early in the question what was coming and had to compose himself and wait to reply and not be too eager delivering a very well-crafted retort which was both poignant and humorous. Regan might have written that reply himself but it was VERY premeditated, right down to the "take a drink of water while they laugh and applaud so you don't look like a pompous jackass." Then again... he was an actor and delivering a line perfectly was his former profession.

Well, assuming “Southerners are racists” (none in the North, Midwest or West… how about Critical Race Theorists (CRT) that preach “ALL and ONLY ‘white’ are racists” (the very DEFINITION of racism) 🧐 All I’m saying is that - while the government and corporations were corrupt back then… just starting to destroy the American Manufacturing base by selling US out to China 🇨🇳 with Wall Street (Bloomberg) building the Chinese Infrastructure and the Postal system using taxpayer dollars to deliver Chinese goods for ‘free’ counting on the fact that the CCP could run wage-slave factories while American towns were decimated…all accelerated once Bush and Clinton took over) AMERICANS didn’t HATE their own COUNTRY just because they were Democrats… Mario Cuomo would never have said - as his son did - “Amerikkka was NEVER that great” and no Democrat back then would have suggested “America needs to be FUNDAMENTALLY changed” (into a Socialist State) That was SDS (Students for a [Socialist] Democrat Society) Abby Hoffman, the Ruben brothers (I knew the younger one) Hillary and Obama… they run the Soviet Democrat Party - now - and they bred ANTIFA and the American Islamists that hide their hater of “Jews” behind their hatred of America… They did not exist as an all controlling, intolerant Ideology that has infested government, the “schooling” (indoctrination) system as they have secreted themselves into American Society today… just as Yuri Bezmanov warned they would tell you “the sky isn’t blue” and “men can have babies” The Soviet Democrat Party was not the focus of power and 90% of Republicans weren’t RINOs buying into this ideology (so long as they could share in the spoils of digital dollars, insider trading, foreign bribes and underage girls provided by Epstein and protected by the FBI. The Greatest accomplishment Trump did - was, inadvertently, flush them all out into the open… and we’ve got one chance to MAGA!
