I haven't done a vw vanagon yet, I'm learning because my kid thrust me into them. That "thing" you showed was your brake adjustment rod. But it was an over all good video. I'm going to follow to see what else you post.

The 'thing' is a brake shoe retainer that slots into the bottom of the backplate, it does kind of look like the other part of the brake adjuster he mentioned however. Over here in Ireland they never come out as they're completely siezed in, we cut the whole unit that they sit into from the old backplate and transfer it over to a new back plate when changing.

Nice video. I''d never be brave enough to do auto repairs barefoot.

+sharkllama Ha, brave and stupid are a fine line, right? In Texas you don't always have a choice...

If you tap bearings out properly, you don't have to destroy them! Just make sure you don't tap on the inner race, but only the outer! Make sure your punch is large enough to not inflict damage, and always use a bigger hammer, to reduce amount of times you hammer. Often these bearings aren't botched...just need proper repacking.

Good comment. I wanted to replace mine, but there is definitely an argument for keeping the OEM VW parts, even if very old, vs new cheap parts, which is most of what you can find these days
