Naw that’s how good Washington was, Pat and John were at Ashburn at 4:30pm with Gibbs and Ritchie, then they can talked to certain players at a certain shed by 5:00pm😅😂🤣
The NFL is dead to me now, I won't watch another game. I just watch the old games on youtube now. No Redskins, No NFL. Its over, put a fork in the league.
@@johnliberty3647 Thats what I said I can’t watch it anymore it dont bring me any joy and the Skins been around all them years... Now just like that they are history
@Mark-xl1ze . Should've swept them in 1997 too. But we BLEW a 14-6 lead IN Dallas WITH the ball and under 2 minutes left....then lost by a FG in OT. Smh
I'm a cowboys fan and I agree with you. Gibbs was a heck of a coach, who always had his team prepared for a fight (unlike Garrett, Phillips, Mccarthy, etc.).
@helpisontheway9405 Not only that Simpleton, but Coach Gibbs is the ONLY coach to with THREE Super Bowls with THREE different qb, man you are too dumb to insult.
Theismann took a terrible beating in this game. The following week against the Cardinals, he took some huge hits and a bunch of sacks. Then in the playoff game at RFK against da Bears, Richard Dent and company practically put him in the hospital. After every hit, Theismann jumped up and went back to the huddle. Never complained, and rarely even missed a snap. Say what you will, but he was one of the toughest, grittiest QBs in the game. I think after these 3 games, he was never quite the same. He probably shouldn't have scrambled as much as he did, but that was his competitive nature.
John Madden and Pat Summerall was the number one announce team. They were the A Team! When you heard Madden and Summerall you knew that either a first place was being decided, a HUGE rivalry was about to go down, or a classic NFL game was being played! Madden LOVED the rivalry games. Packers-Bears, Redskins-Cowboys, etc. He lived for the big fights! The Heavyweight battles! These were epic!
We’d get out of church, head to my grandma’s house for lunch, and then sit down to watch these two slugging it out. Our family absolutely hated the Redskins back then.
I used to luv these games. The only time we wore our Red jerseys, which I used to luv. Was great to c when we faced Dallas. Same for Dallas only wore their Blue jerseys at RFK. good old days
Nobody in the 70s and 80s ran the screen pass better than the Cowboys. Landry really knew how to coach his players on it. As a Skins fan, every time I saw them set it up, I thought, "Oh no, here it goes....' I knew they'd get 20 or 30 yards on it, especially with Dorsett.

THIS GAME WAS BROADCAST HERE IN MEXICO BY IMEVISION, TODAY TV AZTECA...... UF 1984....... Y una semana despues la competencia TELEVISA, transmitió uno de los mejores MONDAY NIGHT entre los vaqueros y los defines de Miami
On the drive that the Redskins scored the game winning TD it was interesting that Madden was endorsing Theismann calling his own number and running a naked bootleg as he did against the Falcons in their Monday night game that season. The called play was an off tackle run for Riggins but Theismann kept the ball and pretty much walked in for the TD. Madden saw the Cowboys D was selling out on Riggins and the play likely would have worked again.
The good but not great Cowboys of the early to mid 80's ...80 to 83 was really the last era in which the Cowboys of the 80's were legit Superbowl contenders
@@SingleTax quite right by the time Danny broke his wrist in 86 he was practically carrying the team. 6 and 2 with him under center pre injury and 1 and 7 without him under center. And his wrist was never the same again after that and Coach Landry never had another winning season nor did Dallas until 1991. Same thing happened with Dorsett really. He was still a solid productive back until Walker came on to the team and started taking more and more of the snaps. I loved Coach Landry like he was my father but he made some horrible choices when it came to shuffling QBs in the 80s. I could never understand why he was so invested in replacing Danny.
There really is no such thing as 'defense' in the modern NFL. We will never see the level of defense and hitting that existed in the 70s, 80s,90s and somewhat in the early 2000s. What you see now is just a parody of the old NFL. A bunch of guys in tights and dreadlocks doing bellyflops and diving at ballcarriers' ankles.
As life long Redskins fan I knew the Cowboys as well as anybody and for awhile in the 70’s Dallas had a system and was ahead of the times Shotgun, 3 down back, double reverses, They were a well organized team but when they would play the Steelers they were much Stronger and bigger and that was the only difference was a couple dropped passes..Here and there but in 1982 The Redskins took over the East They became a beast it helped to have Theismann he could run.. But the game passed T Landry by But they threw him in the trash like Jerry Jones does all his Coaches They probably are who complained and made us changed our name.. The Red isn’t Dead we will rise and rule Again HTTR!
Actually, in the late 1960's and early '70s a number of teams used the shotgun. Then it fell out of favor until the Bills used it in 1980 and other teams followed suit a year later.
@@WaltGekko yes but Coaches were more conservative then...Low scoring games no turnover, run on 3rd down but..Landry was strict on players he never got close to his players and Roger didn’t want to retire when he did but Landry didn’t show he cared about his players he cared only about his system..Everybody was replaceable with Landry..He should have won more SuperBowls then he did.
@@chrisslaughter5552 Yes the Patriots had a streak of 19 straight winning seasons with Bill Belichick where they went to 9 Super Bowls winning 6 in the Cowboys 20 straight winning seasons under Tom Landry they went to 5 Super Bowls winning 2.They definitely should have won more they underachieved.
Fun fact: during the seasons in which the Cowboys won 3 of 4 Super Bowls in the 1990s.... Washington actually won 4 of those 6 regular season games in those seasons... Unbelievable... And one of those games Heath Shuler led the Redskins to a win over a Dallas team that went on to win the Super Bowl that following postseason.
@@bradleyhudgins1005 That's what makes it a great rivalry! The sad flip side to it is, in 2 out of our 3 Super Bowl winning seasons, the Cowpies beat us at home (though we got sweet revenge in the 1982 NFC Championship Game). 1987 was the *only* season in which we won the SB *AND* swept the Cowblows (including the legendary Replacements Game).
1:03:19. Darrell. Green in his first all pro year. burned deep by a white guy (I know I know race doesn't matter). Darrell Green is still my favorite all time Cornerback, I was just shocked to see him get burned deep by someone who was a just an average to good player. Good move by Renfro.
2 things. 1 Joe Gibbs was the best halftime adjusting coach I've ever seen. 2 Tom Landry totally earned my respect when i learned that he is an absolute WW2 hero. Look it up if you didn't know.
The reason Tom Landry almost landed John Elway. Imagine had Landry landed John Elway that the owner of the Colts said no to trading him to the boys. Elway would have been in Dallas for a long time!
Football like madden stated in his opening is run the ball and stop the run - I stop watching the NFL 14 years ago when what I call "the revenge of the nerds" began impacting the game with analytics and fantasy football (and of course always racism) - this past first is like the CFL (which I enjoy because it is still authentic) - the NFL should just go ahead expand the field and go to an 18 game schedule like the CFL -
This game shows the essence of a Hall of Famer. Daryl Green is beaten by veteran (and underrated) receiver Mike Renfro for a TD late in the 1st Half. Early in the 2nd he victimized Danny White who was trying to hit Renfro again by an interception returned for a TD.
Darrell was also beaten by Doug Donley in the first Quarter. Darrell said he was in tears at halftime after the 2 touchdowns but stepped in front Donley and turned the game around.
Mike Renfro was the Dallas version of John Taylor in the 80s... unappreciated and disrespected but a guy that would come up with the clutch catches when you needed him to.
1:10:04 Too Tall with a great head start obliterates Theismann. On the next play, Joe Washington runs right into Jacoby. Not a good first half for WSH but they recovered..
Was this the game that began the kiling off of the celebrations? I remember Dallas getting a bit pissy about the fun bunch one year, trying to break it up. Edit. My mistake. The year before.

As good a coach Landry was, he was no QB whisperer. He ruined Danny White’s confidence by benching him in favor of Hogeboom despite being one of the league’s best QBs from ‘80-83. And it cost the Cowboys a trip to the playoffs as they stumbled to 9-7.
@@michael.prescott4016 As we would see a couple of years later in Indy when the Colts traded for Hogeboom, who was supposed to be the big savior for the then-still-new-to-Indy Colts.
Yeah Landry was not good at managing the QB position.... He alternated quarterbacks Morton and Staubach every other play... Which was not remotely intelligent. He also likely ran Roger out of football early too. Roger may well have continued to play IF he could have actually called his own plays... Then Tom screwed up the situation with Danny White and Hogeboom.
I find that there are/were two types of Cowboy fans when it came to the subject of Danny White: supporters and critics. I never had full confidence in him. But by 1984, it was the start of a low point for the Cowboys as the times had begun to eclipse coach Landry and the flex defence.
Never have been able to understand the critics myself. Lord knows Hogeboom wasn't the answer and he was better than all of the QBs in the great 84 draft EXCEPT Elway and Marino. Any team in the league during that era would have LOVED a QB that consistently threw for 3000 yards and put up more TDs than INTs when he was healthy and allowed to start for a full season. Any team of that era would have LOVED to have had his win/loss record. And lord knows the win/loss record Dallas put up without him healthy and starting was completely atrocious.
Redskins fan for life here, but Roger being 4 years removed from playing, seeing him on the sidelines, he looked like he still could have ran a series or two.
What I remember most about this game was that after it was over I found out it was the first time ever that the Redskins swept the Cowboys in a season.
@@christianorr1059 What do you mean by "Same thing happened in the 1982 season."? The Cowboys and Redskins only played one regular season game (the only time ever) in the 1982 season.
Cowboys would have still made the playoffs if they beat the Dolphins in the Monday night finale in Miami. That Dolphins win put the Giants in the playoffs.
Yeah pretty much. I mean yeah if they had beaten the Dolphins they would have been in but this was the year Marino took them to the Super Bowl and I think they lost maybe twice all year before SF clean their clock. Dan and the Marks brothers were phenomenal that year, too bad they had No D at all. Doesn't matter because NY got in and lost to SF in the playoffs anyway, likely Dallas would have too.
@Help Is On the Way you must be watching with sunglasses on the man is in on tons of tackles and being DOUBLR TEAMED on almost every play..that opens up things for ed jones and jim jeffcoat he's one of the greatest defensive tackles to ever play the game ... besides bob lilly merlin olsen and joe green you can throw alan page in there ...no one better at the d tackle position... the guy was first team all pro seven times that's the best at his position for half his career !! 9 pro bowls first team when the pro bowl meant something not this garbage they play today
