16th September 1984. Home video including in-car footage (very shaky!) of the York 'Round the Houses' historic races. The race was a revival of the old style of racing in Australia held in or around country towns. The York Flying 50 historic races started in 1980.
In 1984 the Australian Jaguar clubs held their National Rally/Concours in Perth and was hosted by the Jaguar Drivers Club of Western Australia and by the Classic Jaguar Club of WA. The York Flying Fifty was included in the events.
We drove from Sydney and back in our 2 Jaguar XK120 roadsters. The one you mostly see in this footage is the BRG chassis #660146. It is the car used for the in-car camera shots. It had belonged to John 'Jumbo' Goddard who had bought it from Peter Whitehead (the racing driver) in the early 1950s and my father Ian Cummins bought it from Jumbo's widow Kate in 1983. Over the 30 years Jumbo owned it, he kept modifying it and using it as a daily driver when he was in the UK. He even drove it from the UK to Moscow in 1958. Modifications included the Jumbo multiple instrument dash treatment, 'D' Type wheels, disc brakes, E-Type 4.2 Litre engine, a turbocharger and headlight rearrangement.
I am not sure who shot all the footage but I think some was done by Reg Ouston. There is also tagged onto the end excerpts of a 1980 doco by Greg Milner called 'Cloth Caps and Wire Wheels; The York Flying 50' which was the first year it was held. The doco footage has an interview with Ian Boughton about his SS 100. It also has an interview with Peter Briggs who, with James Harwood, were the founders of the event which was organised in conjunction with the opening of their York Motor Museum. There is also a news report of a later event.
