1985 Audi Sport Quattro: The Group B Homologation Special

In Austria in 1980, just a year after four-wheel drive cars became eligible to compete in the WRC, Audi debuted the first Quattro rally car and forever changed the sport. Over the next half of the decade (and onwards, if you count the Pikes Peak specials), these Audis would be subjected to a period of rapid iterative evolution that led to the short-wheelbase Sport Quattro models that helped define the infamously fast and dangerous era of Group B rallying.
The relatively lax nature of the Group B regulations gave rise to a number of downright ferocious cars from Audi’s competitors (most notable being Lancia and Peugeot), and while it was not the most successful nor technologically advanced of these top tier cars by the end of the Group B era, the Sport Quattro is a worthy poster child for the lot of them-being first to the punch has its advantages.
The advent of the Group B class provided manufacturers with practically every leeway imaginable given they adhered to a basic set of limits on the car’s engine capacity, track width, and weight, but in order to race these monsters they had to produce 200 versions for the street.
The result of this requirement was a group of legendary homologation specials like the Lancia 037, Lancia Delta S4, MG Metro 6R4, and Peugeot 205 T16. Audi’s contribution to this lot was the Sport Quattro road car, a 300-horsepower box-flared rally weapon with license plates. In this week’s film we’re joining our host Sam Hancock for a tour through the history of Audi’s paradigm-shifting rally program in the 1980s, as well as through the Swiss Alps behind the wheel of a homologation special that lives up to its purpose.

I also miss the old format. I loved to hear what the owners of the vehicle had to say about their passion for the car, the story of how they came to own it, where passion grew from and what drove them to buy it. I also love that wistfulness of the story telling, intersected with visions of the vehicle being driven through the landscape . This format, whilst well executed, now blends into all of other well executed automobile channels in the World Wide Web. Dear Petrolicious new owners, what made Petrolicious so special is quickly ebbing away, perhaps a reflection on what made it unique in the first place infused with your new energy could drive it further not blend into the background with all the others. Cheers.

@@patdevereux6312 Great to hear! I think that the main tip is: it is an art channel, with cars and motorcycles. Basically, people don't wanna hear numbers and facts, they wanna hear how it is to drive emotionally, what the cars offer to the driver's heart. It is great footage, great sound mixing, maybe is just writing more with the heart than the senses, maybe it is find that balance. I'll come back for more, no doubts! Keep on the good work though!

Not many cars short of a the Ferrari F40 that evoke this kind of excitment and ellation. This car was magic. Even the gutless Audi 4000 Quatrro we had was incredibly sorted and everything we've driven or owned to date has been judged against it and almost all paled to compare to the Audi's balance, steering and predicability. If you liked this go check Harrys Garage review of this. Its great

What a lovely segment! I was fortunate enough to be a SCCA corner worker in the classic Chimney Rock Hill Climbs. In the mid-80s, Audi sent Walter Rõhrl in a Quattro. It roared up the hill like barely in control, angry beast rocketing toward me. Slung around the 180, catapulted up the hill with BOV popping. Just a brief moment, but I remember every thrilling second. It brought a tear to my eye watching this n recalling, such a powerful brush with legendary!!!

In seemingly stark contrast to other commenters, this format drew me back in to this channel. I personally perceived a bit of self importance from most owners. There were definitely exceptions to the rule, but much of the back story any the owners became exceedingly unrelatable. With this video and the one preceding it, the presenter's excitement about each vehicle combined with the amazing imagery is truly a great story coupled with those tiny little intangible, nearly frivolous facts that I just crave. Its quite good. I will say, however, there is alot that a turbocharged 5 cylinder will say for itself and it wouldn't hurt letting that beautiful mill do the talking some of the time.

I am not asking for the old recipe,it reached its limits and can't be used anymore, but there is a problem with this one! It needs more true energy, more dirt, more oil and petrol on it and less talking. 60 seconds full throttle of this car through the mountains with just the engine noise and a subtitles of the technical and historical details could handle it all !but this, I couldn't watch it till the end! sorry

Whilst I miss the old driver-based narrative format, the presenter does exude a sense of passion and sincerity which is refreshing. It is almost as if @Petrolicious has reached a more reflective and poetic time in its online journey. I know I'm in the minority but while change is hard to swallow, it does grow on you in time. Also given the circumstances that led to this change, having a presenter narrate the story of the car helps neutralise any unintended driver/owner association with specific causes, political or otherwise.
