Very partial to the MK2. I had an 83 Celica GTS coupe. Always liked the hatchbacks, but just happened to get a chance to get the coupe. That 22RE was bulletproof.
Yep just change the rims of the stock Mk3 Supra and it'll look like a banger. Especially in black. Search up Mk3 Supra black midnight club and you'll see a really sick looking one
@@suave605 obviously I like the mk3 more too but that doesn’t mean the mk4 is sh*t. Also why are you saying that to him, you do realize mk3>mk4 means mk3 is better bud?
Great review man...the Mk3 Supra is probably the most beautiful Japanese sports car. Ranks right up there with the 1st gen NSX. I remember how I lusted after these when I was a kid. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
You are awesome. I knew nothing about this generation of Supras. I watched your video after checking an add of a supra on Facebook marketplace. I than checked the car in person and it had all of the red flags that you mentioned. Thanks to you I dodged a bullet.
Fun fact: the housing and headlights were the same ones used in the MKII. It looks different, because of the differing hood shapes, but they are the same bin parts. I had a 1983 P-Type in white.
Dude, what a fantastic review! You covered so many of the great details of the MK3 Supra Turbo - some stuff I’ve never seen covered anywhere anywhere else. I once owned an 85 supra and it was fantastic but then I was able to purchase my first new car, an 87 supra turbo in pearl white. It was such an awesome vehicle for its time. Bulletproof, comfortable, very fast and great handling. I wish I still owned it and might buy another one someday if I find a clean one like the one you showed in your video. I totally cracked up when you mentioned the ball cooler. I haven’t had a vent like that in another vehicle since then and really miss that thing, as it was so nice in the summertime. This was my first time on your channel but I will definitely be checking out more and probably subscribing. Cheers.
Always love the mark3..but I own a 1987 300zx turbo...I think the 300zx,Supra,RX-7,Mitsubishi Conquest was all ahead of it's time... anybody agrees with me?
@@pius222 the range was more like Eclipse from mitsubishi, 300ZX from Nissan ,Supra from Toyota and NSX from Honda, all 3.0L engines , the NSX was cheap but now because Airton Sena made the interior fit him perfect and died after ,now it´s ridiculous priced but same range as this i refer, the 300ZX and the Supra were the ones i liked the most , the Eclipse was amazing but a lot of electronic functions that with time might fail but related with the car stability at high speeds so i didn´t want one but bought a litle version of the eclipse with a 2.0L engine and a dash that made me travel to the 70´s sport cars, paid in 2009 3.500€ in 3rd hand, and still have it. the RX-7 from 87 two seats not the horrible 2+2 with 1.3L wankel engine 180 h.p. the dash and the driver´s positioning is perfect ,also kept it ,the 2+2 inside still using some parts in the driver´s position from the first model or late 70´s RX-7 , but i love to drive it, the two seat car
This is really helpful. I found an 88 model near my location for sale and I'm hoping it's well taken care of, and maybe buy it. Nonetheless, I'll do the thorough inspection you just presented here. Very insightful!
i had a 93 celica Supra but only diference from that one is thatn the alloy wheels had a very interesting design who made the car even more atractive ,mine was black and had some racing fake model of alloy wheels but it made it diferent from the others of the same years, nice car, only bought it because it looked good to me only after i drove it but wasn´t a bad car really good to drive with manual transmition ,automatic is for children , they should not be allowed to install automatic gears in powerfull cars ,is death for a lot of young drivers, kind of training wheels for bycicles but in a CBR 1000 from Honda, it´s the same only more dangerous, the model before i had it but the interior was ridiculous ,had to install on it a new steering wheel and the dash was so 80´s that made it horrible, only point they failed
7mgte is a pain in the ass to work on. I've had 3 7mgte, 7mgte is trash and I have a built one in my 92 mk3 white package targa. I love how the the car looms
Trim, you say? I am quite naive when it comes to individual Supra parts, I just get emotional over their style and looks. Like a rare beautiful woman, you see if you have a lucky day. The trim is just what it came with in its original state I assume. If interested [anyoe], -I live in far southern Indiana.. But I would only sell them in one complete package. ;)
That's actually pretty funny because the rod knock is because of the head gasket problem and the head gasket problem was because of Toyota not because of the owners. Now if you actually took the time to upgrade the head gasket or at least change out the head studs and retort them, then sure it's a great engine. But don't put all the problems on the engine on the owners because it definitely was a manufacturing problem from the beginning. Also you forgot to mention that the later model supras were actually wider than the initial mk3s
Interesting evaluation! Where did you get that from? I’ve never heard that and to be honest it doesn’t make sense to me. The oil and coolant systems are completely independent on this car. Can you elaborate?
@@Miguelsgarage improperly torque heads from the factory mean the head would lift under boost, or the hesdgasket would not seal properly and fail. When you get coolant in your oil from the hesdgasket not sealing, that water/coolant would micro rust or flash rust parts of your internals that should should never touch anything other than oil. So rod knock. It's literally caused because water and coolant are not good lubricants. To make it worse, a lot of times a hesdgasket would go, the person would remove the head, drain oil, deck head and replace it on the engine, then within a few thousand miles, rod knock. Really made people not want to deal with the 7m. It doesn't have the best location oil galleys for cooling so keeping it cool is a another priority. It can be a great engine it just had flaws that made the majority of people hate it before proper solutions were found. Plus the original headgasket material was trash. So put it all together Shitty headgasket material, improperly torqued headbolts, oil galleys/ports weren't in the best locations for cooling all cylinders, and bearings that seemed to rust and corrode pretty easily, a CPS that's base timing could wander with higher power and belt stretch, lastly an oil pump that could be a little finicky if you were bad about doing oil changes on time. You have an engine that requires more attention than a lot of people would typically expect from a Toyota. That doesn't make it bad, but it means there's a few steps to make it "bulletproof" that you'd almost never have to do with any JZ engine turbo or ptherwise
@@freestyleskyline you’re right about a lot of things, but I’m not so sure about the coolant and oil mixing part. These galleys aren’t even close to each other. What always used to happen was the gasket would break right along the edge of the cylinder where the coolant ran up to the head and coolant would sip into the combustion chamber. Never heard about it mixing with the oil.
@@Miguelsgarage if it gets in the combustion chamber it can get it to the oil. Think about it. Just because it's hot doesn't mean it disintegrates. Water and coolant just turn into a gas or vapor. You can most certainly have catastrophic headgasket failure and it'll mix. Or just getting into the combustion chamber the pcv system and intake can suck up those vapors and when it condensates again it's now in the head and dropping down into the block. It does happen. I've literally seen blown head gasket on 7m and a ton of water in the oil pan when it's drained. In fact I've done it in reverse Drained an oil pan full of water and later determined the headgasket was blown
Mechanical parts are easily accessible. The aftermarket support is also very strong. You may have difficulty with some body parts and panels... Go for it! the longer you wait the more expensive they get!
I'm not sure what tool you are referring to remove the target top. I 2 Supra 86 non targa non turbo and then a 1991 white turbo targa and I did not need a tool to remove it. Car looks great thank you for the background info.
@@Miguelsgarage we use them for film and TV use but is tarted just buying them 20 years ago when they were cheap and even some recent. i dont like them modified . i hate that .
_Everything is better than A80 Supra! She is fast sport car only in Holywood movies and people's imaginations and dreams! Her predecessor A70 outclass her in absolute everything and thats Toyota Racing Division Official Statement ..._
Both the W58 and R154 were available on the MK3 Supras from 1986.6-1993. The W58 was smaller, lighter, adn therefore weaker and was paired with the N/A Supras. It does shift a lot smoother than the R154, which btw was paired with Turbo models starting in 1987. It is heavier, stronger, and as I mentioned in the video, it does shift rougher than W58.
you missed other critical supra models. Group A (toyotas 20 or so race cars) Turbo A toyotas 500 all black cars inspired by the group a supras 88 Ga70 a narrow bodied mkiii supra 86-89 The best and baddest mkiii supra the jza70 it came stock with 50hp more the same hp as the Japanese mkiv this supra had about 30ftlbs of torque more then the 7m as well The jza70 had several trims the regular, the limited the limited version could be the 7m 3.0 limitedbor 2.5 limited the limiteds were the full package full trim cars based on comfort trim and luxury. Now gor the baddest most powerful and lightest one was the JZA70 R it was the lightest even the driver seet was non motorized it had a mechanically adjusted manual seat it was atleast ½ the weight of all the 7m seats, it had a Recaro interior most of these cars were black and manual there may have been a few rare mica green (dark green) jza70 rs the jza70 always came hardtop and was the sportiest chassie in the mkiii only weighing in at 3150 lbs the only supra mkiii lighter is the ga70 manual it had a 2.0ltr and w58 manual in its lightest form. It was around 3050lbs. Also there was hints to toyota calling the celica & celica supra, supra the 2000Gt(name stuck) 2800Gt (xx celica), commercials advertising the mkiii supra as the 3000GT! They couldnt label the later supras the GT like opel gt, mistub 3000gt, Ferrari would have had a cow already because gto was taken Mitsubishi had to rename their platform in us markets.
Thanks for sharing! I'm aware of those models, but didn't mention them because they were not available in the US where I'm based. You definitely know your Supras though!
Look I like this video, and I would literally stab someone to own a clean, green manual turbo A70, but the point about the head gaskets is wrong. It's well known that they were undertorqued on accident from the factory for years. Toyota even eventually admitted it themselves.
I pay close to nothing on mine, but I do have several cars on the same policy. The insurance companies know that the same person can only drive so much... There are many other factors that come to play as well such as FICO credit score, driving score, number of vehicles, driving history, age, etc... Simply go to your insurance provider and ask for a quote!
european and american cars been copying japanese cars forever but they've never reached the quality and excitement that only japanese cars give you....
@@mikemike-rf7qb gotcha! Yes, the interior received its last update starting in 1990. The 91 and 92 models had the option of a shadow grey interior color. Not many people order it and on top of that, the sale numbers were already decking with the 1992 model selling around 1200 models. This makes the color VERY rare and very desirable. This wasn’t one of those ugly colors that nobody wanted, it is actually a nice one! In terms of materials, they were all the same as far as I know. Hope that helps clear it up!
I enjoyed my beautiful, black, 1987 Supra 5-speed, but I replaced it with an even sexier, black, 1990 Celica Alltrac Turbo, which I love & will probably never sell. I find the Celica better in almost every way. Have never looked back or regretted it, but I do get excited anytime I see a mk3 Supra on the street, as they are still very attractive cars. BTW, if you want a sweet Japanese grand tourer, also consider a Lexus SC400 - timeless style, smooth ride, great high speed composure & incredible reliability.
Can't argue with that! The Celica Alltrac is a great car with a very different purpose than the Supra. The SC is a MKIV Supra in disguise... The father of the MKIV Supra really as it is where the MKIV Supra came from. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please consider subscribing if you haven't. I really appreciate it!
Very well made video and quite detailed! You should have mentioned other neat options/gadgets of the car like the amazing digital climate control unit, the Tilt and Telescopic steering wheel with memory, the amazing cruise control with memory, the rear window defroster that has a timer integrated in the switch! 😍 The cool fog lights, the incredible good sound system with 4 speakers and 4 tweeters and the rear oem sub woofer and amplifier! The integrated headlights washers and so many more! Amazing car!
I have a full bolt on 7mgte mk3 to avoid rod knock shim the oil pump you’ll get way more oil pressure and I have a hks head gasket torqued to 75 ft-Lb instead of the factory 50 my 7mgte is making 430whp at 13psi low boost
Ogg1es Plays do it , but I’d recommend a hks head gasket, arp studs a 3 inch exhaust with an upgraded turbo, intercooler, boost controller, fuel pump that’s what I have on my car right now along with a. Stage 3+ clutch but you may need new rods and bearing it all depends on how the engine was treated the problem with 7m’s is 9 times out of 10 the owner

My dad had a 86.5 and I loved that car. One of my favourite features was the crotch vent. There is a vent right under the steering column that blows on your crotch. Wearing shorts on a hot day sitting on those leather seats and you really appreciate it. The other cool thing was the cassette/radio. It was more advanced than the large stereo unit we had in our house. It could skip songs on a cassette.
My first car was and continue to still own in the family is a 89’ red Supra Turbo with the rare targa and 5spd combo. To this day I always regret neglecting it and owning other cars over the years. Great car with a deep motor sports history.
i have the same, but automatic. mine have been without plates for 14 years now. but in a few months it will be on the road again - and i will be singing..
Been driving the same 87 Turbo since 96. Had 110K now has 306K. The bones of many Supras has kept this one on the road. The way to tell a 87 from a 88 Turbo is by the shape of the 3rd brake light under the wing. 87 is rectangular, 88 is trapezoidal. 89 to 92 has it in the edge of the wing as you stated.
I've been driving my '87 turbo since 1996. Now approaching 300K miles on the body ( 3rd engine). I notice on the car you're demonstrating that there must've been a leak at the turbo cooling hose coming out of the thermostat standpipe. Tightening the hose or using plumbers putty on the 90° elbow should solve that. Was studying your engine detail for the vacuum hose clips to get them write on mine! Toyota has a webpage for Supra owners to suggest 5 parts they would like to see remade since most have been out of production for years. Parts yards are pretty much dried up and eBay is about the only place you can find hard to get parts.
I do miss my mk3.. tho had HG and then bottom end failure from oil starvation as well haha.. Was 21 when I first had one and yeah of course modded the hell out of it on a budget.. But such a nice car to drive..
When checking the trunk area for rust it's also best practice to check the bottom of the antenna motor housing has the seal around the antenna tends to go bad over time allowing water to leak down inside the antenna itself and rusting out of the bottom of the motor housing and cooling water up in the passenger rear quarter
I own a 87 turbo and I haven't added many aftermarket parts probably only making 370 HP and it is amazing I love this car very much and it's a wonderful icon that was way ahead of it's time
Great video and thanks for putting some knowledge in this brick head of mine. I’m the new owner of a 1987 Turbo Supra with 115,00.00 on the clock and everything has just been made new from bumper to bumper. Engine, turbo, transmission, all handling parts. Interior is in great shape and paint is good but I’m going to have her painted anyway. The Targa top comes off easy and she is a sweet car. I’m the owner of a 2001 Ford Lightning and Mustang Gt. Tired of everyone pulling up and having to hit the throttle in the Lightning to prove her worth. I’m ready to enjoy this Supra and let her take me all over the U.S. thanks again for a great video and look forward to learning all I can about this car and keeping her stock.
My dad had a 92 just like that one when I was a young kid... His was white turbo with a removable top... I can still remember riding shot gun at 4 and 5 years old like a doctor lol... now these kids of the last 20 years they ride in car seats till their practically able to drive haha... But I’ll never forget how much fun it was just cruising around Dallas zipping around people... such a sporty and badass little car... we still give him a hard time to this day for not keeping it or at least trading it in for the 93 that’s worth a fortune today 😂
Very informative video. Thx. The supra gen 3 wears the wedge shape much better than the gen 4 wears the bubble shape. It may be "80 - 90%" of the gen 4, but as a person who appreciates GT cars, it works for me. Oddly, one competitor is the 88 thunderbird turbo which was designed as a mature GT also.
I sold my 89 Turbo Supra to help me buy my first house in 2008. It was worth the sell, but I had a void for nearly 10 years... So I picked up another 89 Supra. It’s a work in progress. But anything is possible with discipline. I saved my money for the purchase and now I feel whole again. (Even if my new ones isn’t as nice as my first Supra). Nice video, very informative.
You know it's pretty weird watching this, I sat in this car when I bought my truck at Koch. And now I have a channel based on reviewing trucks kinda similar to yours! (Also I literally park in the same spot when I'm reviewing at Koch) I'm gonna be honest, I definitely flipped out that you got to interview Doug Demuro. I'm like "dang this guy is definitely got a cooler channel than me"
Great video Miguel! Since the car is from that dealer in PA, I'm curious if you are in PA also? I have 2 turbo MK3 Supras in NY, an 89 5spd, and a 91 auto. Unfortunately my 91 has been sitting in the garage for quite some years waiting to have the engine build completed. I'm looking for a mechanic that knows the car and engine, but it seems there aren't many out here. Would love to hear from you about possible shops in the area that could so the work.
Thanks for the note, I appreciate it! I'm not aware of good shops in NY; not saying there aren't any, just that I personally don't know any. I do know the guys from Unit 12 Motoring in New Jersey and they are standup guys. Give them a call! Thanks again for your comment, and please don't forget to subscribe if you haven't done so already. I really appreciate it!
Love mk3's the most. Probably because my brother had a nice red european 91 turbo 5 speed...that car got me into supras for good. the styling is so so hot to me, for a car. my dream car to this day.
ive had mine for 17 years now, but its far from stock anymore XD all the hks goodies you cant buy anymore 🤤 630whp ish. Havent done anything to the engine other than oilchanges sparkplugs etc after i built it 15 years ago
