i'm 27 and to me it's one of the best looks out there. I have a CBX750rf 84 in mint condition but have been searching for quite some time now. finally got my hands on one in good contition here in Norway wich is not easy because of the salty weather.
I had a 1985 Vf 1000R and had it repainted in ROTHMANS HONDA colours My licence plate was HRC I had Mick Doohan autograph the the rear seat cover which I kept. I sold it in 1999. Loved this bike. It was a little heavy, but in long sweepers it was rock solid.
I absolutely have loved these bikes ever since I was a kid just a stunning motorcycle it still looks great today 33 years later I can see why its Museum quality indeed
I remember the 1st time I saw this bike on the street back in the 80s. Whoa.....after seeing CBs and such. This looked like a full on race bike. Late 80s were great for sport bikes. I owned a few ;]
Awesome machine. A friend of mine bought one new and had it up till two years ago when he passed. It spent its entire life outside on the front yard in rain and snow. Always ran fine every spring!
One of these great bikes pulled into the dealership about 4 years ago. I could hear it coming down the road before I could see it. Despite not having seen or heard one in over 10 years I could tell for sure that it was a VF1000R before sighting it! These bikes have that unmistakable sound. V4, 360 crank firing order and gear drive cams....
WOW...A-M-A-ZING!!! (no pun-intended on the A-M-A) What a well-cared for beauty - the sheen of the original patina, easy start, smooth idle and note of that V4 engine w gear driven cams...are just incredible. I remember this bike as a teen (was on my wall) but I really appreciate your highlighting the details of this model's story...the hand-laid carbon/fiberglass fairing part floored me, and "can run a lumber-mill with the drive chain" part is hilariously true. Honda always had a way of blending simplicity with ahead-of-it's time technology, features, reliability, durability and value. Thanks so much for sharing.
I believe that I saw you on Falcon Parkway this Sunday. I have a 1985 VFR1000R that is bored 80 thousands over. Great job and it makes me want to get mine goi
my dads last bike was a bike like this, would love to ride one again one day, i remember i was 5 years old and my dad did take me for a short ride on back.. He sadly passed away 1 year later, so every time i see one of these bikes i kinda get down memory lane. Take care off her!
An excellent example of Honda Engineering, thanks for showing.I read though that these Engines dont like to spend too long on Tickover - the Oil Supply to the Heads is Marginal at Low Revs.Admittedly Oil Quality has improved vastly since the 80's,Honda even had a PTFE Additive specifically for these Bikes to add to the Oil.
It's fn beautiful!! I had the '86 500f 10 yrs ago. Same color scheme. Figured out how to remove those carbs and service them. Had a few issues but wish I still had it. This 1000r is probably my favorite sportbike of all. I LOVE the ns/nsr500 2 stroke gp bikes from the early 80s. Makes me want to go out and continue transforming my 18,000 mile (yesterday) '81 XS11 into a racier version of the super bike it was at the end of it's era.
That thing is beautiful! I had one for about 2 years. My best friend at the time, was wanting to get back into riding, and this was sitting. His new wife said " you will never ride a motorcycle again, if you are married to me." So he literally gave me the title, signed it over and said come pick it up. It needed a new battery, and the carbs gone through. That was it... but it sat for 2 more years in my hands.( i had 3 more bikes, and a new house...my wife said sell it, as well. Sold it for $300, to some wild oil and gas kid, who was missing fingers, and destroyed every vehicle he had. (Openly told me he's reckless) it was in great shape, but dusty/cob-webbed. Because it sat, there was gas in the oil, and kid said..could be nothing, could need new rings, whatever. I can't spend more than 300 not knowing there's bigger issues, unless you can start it up right now. So off she went for 300.00 most beautiful bike I owned, but never ridden. :(
i bought one new in 85, rode it to Florida and Winnipeg (thru northern ontario then minnie, wisconson michigan) from central ontario, the florida trip i stopped at a US honda dealer and bought the dual headlights and modded them into my bike
Beautiful bike David and I share that Honda love! I have two of these (and the gear driven 86 VFR750) and just absolutely love these Interceptors! It’s funny how even today, people stop you at a gas station and tell you about “the one that got away”. Lol Anyway, great video and thanks for sharing! She is one of the cleanest I’ve seen (besides the one at Barber). 😁👍
I bought a running/riding '84 1000 yesterday. It's at the dealer getting new rubber. I figured since they have it apart, may as well let them install new brake pads, front rotors, and sprockets and chain. Only an extra hour of labor. Carbs aren't running perfect, but I hope it only needs to be driven a bit. Rebuilding the carbs and inspecting the top end of the engine will come after I send the body panels to get painted and decaled.
@@MrVM41 where in gods name do you get 170 hp for a VF 1000R? Claimed was 130, some say only ~ 122 and that's at the crank! So rear wheel is like 110 to 115. That's my point the engine is waaaaay...dated. A modern V4 makes ~ 200 hp. You may be confusing the fact that the superbike engine for racing is going to be a bit modified from the street version. Honda knows plenty about V4 engines, and if it made sense to use a 30 yr. old design the would, imho. But hell, do what you want the suzuki katana of the early '80s has had a life in the historic races. They're highly modified engines in aftermarket race frames.
Really cool bike. I had an '85 Honda VF 1100 Sabre V-4. It had the cam chains, but the cams were real good, and it ran very good, and was very fast . I regret selling it, but i have a modern day Honda V-4 and its quite nice too :)
I owned one back in the day, nearly cost me my life, but not because of the bike itself, the old story of a car pulling out in front of me. As far as the bike itself goes, was one of a kind, straight line speed was only bested by the GSXR's of the day, the handling wasn't awesome, with a 16" front wheel and below average suspension components, she didn't inspire confident riding, but that being said, I enjoyed owning her for as long as I did.
I have a 1985 model with around 47,000 km on it . I will be doing a frame up restoration on it this summer then selling it but could be convinced to sell it "pre restoration " if the price is right . Turns over but needs the carbs and fuel system cleaned out to run . Has original exhaust . ( Ontario Canada )
I had one off these for two years. They were the dog’s bollocks. The previous owner was Honda Ltd, Power Road, Chiswick. It lost to the Kawasaki on the IOM.
I purchased one brand new in 1986, it had slightly different colour scheme/graphics, but pretty much the same as yours. Think it was designated VF1000FE or possibly G. Loved that bike and really wish I’d kept it as it would be worth big money now.... Enjoy it, they really are a bit of Honda Wizardry👍🏽
I had two of these, Euro spec, Super machines, could easily & controllable spin & slide the rear wheel. Biggest problem was at French autoroute peage they all wanted to talk about it, so water temp went up n up.
Got to sit on one of these at Del City Honda in OKC, they only had one, and you couldn't touch it only look. But I knew some of the guy's, and they let me sit on it. Just sitting on it gave me, (well how can I put this without sounding offensive) WOOD!.😉
I worked on a construction site back in '87 and one of the guys came to work on one of these machines - must've been an F2 cos I remember seeing the Bol d'Or logo. I'd never really noticed motorcycles before and I remember thinking "how on earth does that huge thing stay upright?" Two weeks later I'd bought myself a little motorcycle and that was the start of my riding career. I've always had a soft spot for the big VF ever since...
This is a beast. Never really a success on the track - it was heavy and complex. But, as you say, it would have been a monstrous thing on the Autobahn. I imagine Honda sold these at a loss. It wasn't a limited-production model, but they didn't make too many.... and there are many parts unique to this model.... So the costs must have been enormous, with too few units sold to recoup them. A wonderful, scary beast and a living monument to the motorcycle arms race of the mid-80s. In the end, it was killed by lighter, faster, more powerful and faster machines from rival manufacturers.... But what a beast!
Looks too clean man, better start riding, and let it roar ;) I have a gen 5 VFR, the V4 nad gear driven cams wont let me rest! Im down in the garage taking it for a spin every day!
How'd you get black plastic on the front dash wrap and both left and right controls. around so shiny WOW.... I've been fighting this dullness on mine since I bought it new in November 1984.
Hi , I'm considering buying one in the UK , my main question is how much should I pay for very good condition original bike with 8k miles , and will it appreciate in value ....cheers from Yorkshire UK ...
Like the RC30 these were made up to a standard rather than down to a price. It was a limited edition machine designed for racing. Honda made a loss on each one but they did not care because the object was to win races
80s and 90s, Honda made, by far the most innovative motorcycles, now they've sort of lost their way. This vfr1000 and the nr750 were way overengineered to say the least.
Had one that I bought from a friend 2001, paid 2000 $ for it and it had about 50 000km and I think it was a 1984 model. Didn’t like it cause it was very very unstable over 120 mph .
