Most of the white NYPD comes from neighborhoods like Bensonhurst and Howard Beach. I know someone who got his jaw broke just because he was black, at a basketball game in Long Island. That happened not too long after the Bensonhurst murder.
Times have changed author! Blacks and Latinos are walking and even residing around bensonhurst everyday now..look at the Chinese! The flip side... property value in bed stuy and downtown Brooklyn has multiplied by ten folds!
This was a racially tense and violent era in NYC history. They city was literally on the brink of destruction, with all of this happening during the crack era as well.

It brings chills to my spine and pain to my heart to hear them say "it's a shame to face this racism and it's 1986..." and I'm sitting here at my computer saying "....and still a shame happening in 2019!!!" White supremacist terrorist plot just uncovered this evening in the DC area.... listening to statements from the Oval Office over the last 2+ years, just horrific towards people of color (people period)...and yo, WHEN do we say enough is enough?! And what I love about us is we stand tall with character and beauty. Sure no one or especially group of people is perfect but WOW Black America! I love us with a specified admiration that I'd have even if I were another race. I'd be like "wow.....but those Black Americans though did you know that...." IF you don't, read a book, go to a museum (especially in DC)! Learn about a special group of courageous Americans who in all of this hatred and injustice that continues on, we don't declare civil war against OUR nation or go on race riots to destroy whites. No, we hold our heads high and press on. Sometimes it confuses me due to basic human nature to fight back, but them I'm impressed and I say again, "WOW....gotta love us!" Cause we also HAVE NO FEAR! bobby G black on black crime has nothing to do with whites killing someone because of the color of their skin. Crime will always be high in impoverished neighborhoods and one of the reasons for poverty is also linked to systemic racism. It’s nice to finally see whites coming out and protesting but there are still ignorant people who will remain silence and blind because deep down you are racist and prefer to live in denial and fear.

Because my black girlfriend always met me in Morris Heights as I parked. She didn’t think I was safe to walk through the park and get on her elevator. I didn’t have to do the same for her in my area of manhattan. She didn’t bitch, she didn’t scream nonsense. P.S. she moved. She hated how the people in her neighborhood where and didn’t feel her son was safe.

Gorgon Don as for this video.. there was more to it. This was provoked. The media always cherry picks the narrative. Don’t we all know there are three sides to a story his, hers and the truth. This was somewhere in between. Nobody told him to run onto the belt parkway. His friends didn’t. It wasn’t an intentional move. Maybe if you where able to read more about what happened beforehand and the mental or physical state of the four, you would be able to sit back and realize that both parties behavior contributed to the unfortunate death.

good question, I was out there about 10 years ago now and then , I had no idea of its history then Im not originally from NYC, nothing really seemed off but I could tell it was a white tight knit community. Places like that I try not to be out late
Howard Beach historically was an Italian American community. It’ still is , but more diverse in recent years. That was not the case however in 1986. It was overwhelmingly white, upwards of probably 95% And overwhelmingly Italian American, and to a lesser extent Jewish.

I'm black and Italian. My dad was Italian. My grandparents died never knowing I was actually part Black because my mom and I were light enough to pass. My older sister had to leave the house when my grandmother came over because she had dark skin.

What's sad though, is that the same Crown Heights community that experienced an injustice like this, had done almost the exact same thing to an orthodox Jewish man five months earlier and would go on to do it again five years later

There was way more to the story than meets the eye. I was from the Bronx, and this type of violence on both sides was a daily occurrence! If we were in their neighborhood we got beat up, if they were in our neighborhood they got the same! To me it was a simple disagreement and a fight! had this had happend in a black neighborhood, it would have produced the same result! Thefact that they chased him and he just happened to run in the wrong direction, was just bad luck! They didn’t mean to kill him! these kids were just made an example of to calm the city… The charge should have been involuntary manslaughter at most! The kids were just sacrificial lambs. It was a beating, that unfortunately turned out to be a murder, because the kid ran onto the highway. Usually involuntary manslaughter, carries a sentence of a year and a half maybe two years!
