I grew up in the 80s and have been a lifelong Sooner fan and I gotta tell ya guys I miss the Thanksgiving tradition of the Big Red Battle. It was a dad gum holiday in my household. We had thanksgiving and watched the Cowboys then the day after we watched OU/Nebraska and put up the Christmas tree. Now I hear Nebraska is trying to back out of OUr home and home?! Cowards!
Sean Dobson: Not cowards, just the administration considering trying to add an extra home game to make up revenue lost for the local businesses. Remember, Nebraska wasn't allowed any fans at all last season. Not sure how everyone just forgot about the pandemic in this situation and somehow think this is on Nebraska as a whole when it was their administration. It was a dumb idea anyhow. Nebraska could have a watch party at the stadium for the OU game, make it a gameday event. They could make up a lot of money that way.
Oh wow ! Thank you for sharing this video! This was one of my favorite sports days! I had two TVs in my room. I played dueling doubleheader’s on each TV. ABC had Ohio State- Michigan, then USC-UCLA. CBS has Penn State-Notre Dame and then this game
34:37 - Right there Nebraska should have sent on their FG unit. If good, the score would be 17-10 and Nebraska would at least have a chance for an onside kick. I've seen this too much in football, when a team down by 9-11 points with little time left, will run too much clock trying to score a TD. As soon as you are in a makeable range, you have to kick the FG to give your team a chance.
I've often wondered the same thing myself. Yes there is a chance that the kick could be blocked, have a bad snap, or a missed kick; but the percentages are on your side. At least try to make it a one score game to give your team a chance.
Painful game, especially since a lot of Nebraska players talked trash before this one. If I recall Osborne was not thrilled about it. As a spectacle it was quite the letdown; it had been hyped as a possible sequel to 1971. This was four losses in a row to OU and a lot of us were wondering if it was the 70s all over again.

What a drop off from Keith Jackson announcing to Brent Musberger. Over the years, Musberger’s commentary has devolved to…”Quarterback! Middle! Incomplete.” Awful.
I love the CBS college football theme song! It's hard to believe that it's been around all these years, and I'm going to miss hearing it before SEC games in 2024. I really wish that they had maintained that contract. It'll be odd watching Big Ten games on CBS.
I never had faith we were going to win this. Nebraska players was doing too much fighting words all week leading to the game. I knew it was going to bite them in the end..
@Steven Goodnight we went to the Orange Bowl the year OU beat Arkansas. that morning at a booster breakfast -my husband took my pic with Keith Jackson. He said he hadn't been feeling well - I asked are you playing? He said Coach wants this one bad. Those kids loved Coach Switzer
Tom Osborne was very proactive with the Student athletes in trying to steer them into focusing hard work in the "class room" as well as on football field. When ever a player got into some kind of trouble with the law he was there showing proper concern for all involved. Barry Switzer was way more dismissive of those kinds of events and more or less had a "Boys will be boys" attitude because winning games was the only concern he had as a coach. What really happened in the end, students who cared more about partying went Sooner and Students that cared more about education went Husker for the most part. For nearly 25 years those two team coaches indirectly butted heads on and off the field over their different approaches to coaching.
This is just my opinion. If Switzer would have made Eric Mitchell stay at QB instead of back up running back Eric would have finally had the maturity with his athleticism & size to give us the best chance against Miami. A 6’1” 200 lb wishbone QB at 4.45 speed. Eric Mitchell could have been one of the best wishbone QB’s Switzer ever had. Holieway was just spectacular & will always be Switzers best wishbone QB. Mitchell just needed the experience & football IQ to catch up with his God given talent. I remember reading & hearing about Eric Mitchell from family in Oklahoma. Eric was one of the highest option Quarterbacks coming out of Pine Bluff Arkansas. Switzer was just an amazing recruiter to get the blue chip running backs to come share the carries in a wishbone offense. Keith Jackson another Arkansas recruit was just another of Switzers amazing recruiting talents. The #1 TE coming to a Oklahoma. I know he was sold on catching the ball with Troy Aikman but Barry never fully committed to the I Formation. I dont know the formula that could beat Miami but i know Eric Mitchell was the difference maker at QB that gave Oklahoma there best chance to break tackles & run away from there athleticism on defense.
Colorado had been playing both teams on the road every other season and wanted to split it up. Huskers played in Boulder back to back and Col was @ OU back to back. Makes sense. Accurate? Unknown.
Does anyone notice the difference between the blackshirts of 87 and the blackshirts of today?? this nebraska team brought the lumber on defense! if nebraska wants to be good again get back to playing defense!
Yeah both teams always played to see who would represent the big 8 in the Orange Bowl..But there was one problem..The winner had to play Miami and we all know how that turned out
Hard to believe today but there was a time when Wishbone teams like Oklahoma were record-setters. OU still holds the record for rushing yards in a game with 768 running this offense. The game has changed so much
