I had a friend who had a R5 turbo as a company car when they first came out. I had bought an Escort RS Turbo and he offered me a drive from Bath to London one day. An astonishing car, compared to the Ford and its relatively 'tame' turbo install (that always was the problem, not enough boost), you really knew the Renault had a turbo! And it was only 1.4ltr! Gearing was a bit high, but still a great car.

If you were young enough to enjoy these new, you'd probably meet the Fuzz quite soon as they always assumed anyone you driving one had nicked it! These are pure nostalgia, even the smell takes me back

@@mattkinsella9856 It’s absolutely immaculate for the age. Book fulls of receipts etc. We are going to get a few drone shots of it driving in the summer. When I was a toddler he had an XR3I that got nicked so this is finally his upgraded replacement 🤣

i think its the people that tend to buy these cars that have made it rare trying to make it better

My first car was a Mk3 1.3 CVH Escort and the MK4 RS was my dream car. I drove a few XR2 Mk2’s in the day and a Mk 3 XR2i but I never got to drive an RS Turbo. I loved my MK6 1.8 Zetec Si but what shocked me was how much heavier it was compared to the Mk 3. Once all this lockdown is over I would love to see your RS I bet it’s absolutely mint the way you describe her. I wish there were more videos of these.

Modern cars are a lot safer but also a lot heavier rs turbos weigh 965kg with 181NM of torque Prius weigh 1380kg with 142NM.

@@phil6747 yes, my mate had a 750kg Uno Turbo with about 190 bhp. To this day, one of the quickest accelerating cars I have been in. 😂

@@furiousdriving, yes, absolutely! So many people I knew when I was growing up had Fords from between 1986 and 1993, and they all had a certain way that they looked in the inside. It's rather like the contemporary Austin Rover/Rover Group products, isn't it?

Wow, someone else out there remembers C.A.T.S Eyes too. Fords virtually use to be a member of the cast in 80's TV programmes.

It's easy to watch the episodes, as the paperwork regarding their ownership was lost a few years ago, so they are available in their entirety on RU-vid (for now). Absolutely, Fords featured prominently in all three seasons!

Theres probably a good book or video in that. Someone from Australia commented about a hot Ford which was almost the same as the UK/Euro version so it does seem like the US makers were holding back the interesting cars to protect their own product, ironically at their own expense long term

The North American escort was based on the Mazda b platform. Apart from the similar external look and the engine. The European escort and the US escort are not the same mechanically, the interior is different too. From what i can understand the Mazda platform was chosen simply because it was allready being produced in the US and was more cost effective than retooling the US plants to build european type escort. At the time Ford owned 33% shares of Mazda. Simply to save money.

2011metalmaniac True about the 2 nd gen USA Escort. I liked those OK. It’s the original 1981- 89 first gen cars that were such a poor effort. Ford went to great lengths to advertise the Escort as a “world car”. It came out resembling the Euro car but with all the proportions wrong: wheels that were too small and tucked too far into the arches. Plain silver bumpers, side view mirror shared with 70’s Pintos and Mavericks, plastic chrome everywhere on higher spec versions cheap plastic Interiors with nasty feeling switch gear. Not as bad as a Chevette maybe but still pretty bad. A drove a friend’s 87 Escort GT that had the “H.O.” 1.9L. Now, This was the top of the range car well into the model run and it was slow, wheezy and rolled all over the place when cornering. Bad, bad, bad! They did sell a ton of them though. And the GT at least looked pretty good for the time. It just could have been and should have been so much more.

@@jennydonne8946 are you sure I've had over 30 xr3's rst and lots of 1.4s and the 1.4s always been 5 doors I've never come across a 3 door 1.4 had many 1.3 4 doors had a few 2 door estates too.

@@lukecowell7516 I actually have a brochure from 1988 for the whole Ford range that came with the car, previous owner had it in there. You could get a 1.4 in L trim as a 3 door hatchback. L & popular came as either a 3 or 5 door hatchback, there was no 3 door 1.6 L version, GL & Ghia were 5 doors and XR3i was a 3 door or a 2 door cabriolet. I was 16 years old in 1988 & I so wanted an XR3i or an RS turbo. This information is for UK spec.

I went to view a 3 door 1.4 4 years ago, just before I bought the one I have now. Definitely exist. Pretty sure all trims and engines were available in 3 & 5 door with the obvious exception of XR3 & RS

a little over 10 years ago I broke up the last one I owned and sold the parts, it was a pretty big spec one that had been featured in fast ford magazine but they were worth little money then and there was more money in breaking it up. lots of others did the same I think which is probably part of the reason they became more rare and the value rose that and theyre rot like a motherfucker :)

They were good, but if it was you're first TWOCing and you'd only nicked low power stuff before they would have been a handful! I dont want to diss build quality but if you're driving a brand new car and having to carry a MIG the rust proofing might need some attention! ;-)

That's ok...you just got carried away with being in the presence of such an iconic car! I had a Mk1 XR2 before the RS...again another excellent car that served me well. I got £2200 for the RS and bought a ropey Astra GTE....great car but loved to rust! £600 was nearly a month's take home pay for a poor squaddie at the time!

I found a few versions on the power figures and had to pick one - different year to year perhaps?

Tom Morris I never did, but could have been a later owner who did? Just a few years ago a later owner messaged me to say the car was still around and he was tracking all previous owners.. It’s amazing to think a car you owned 25 years previous is still around..

@@furiousdriving the rs in my garage ive had since 1993 growing up in essex i messed about with turbos super chips mine reached over 200 bhp had a burton tuned engine head, cam,and a cossie turbo.absoloute mental car but as i aged im glad i kept the original engine because it kept throwing pistons through the block. and the originl engine is sitting where it belongs lol
