We did get the Mark 1 Fiesta in the US. My parents owned one for a time. It was the first car I remember next to my uncle's Mark 1 Scirocco. The US Fiestas are rare though. I imagine it was Ford's answer to the Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon

When I bought my first new car, an '89 Escort "Pony" with Air but no radio, the salesman was trying to unload a Festiva on me. The mid 80s through early 90s Festiva filled the class the MkII Fiesta filled in other countries. Frankly I'm not sure it isn't the same car though.

I specifically remember the Fiesta and I think there was another similar version of the car that was released around the same time. I remember this since as a child I thought it was cool that there was a car I saw as "kid sized" and I could possibly drive if I could. This is one of the cars that sparked my interest in small micro cars. My neighbor had a MG Midget, I loved it.

As an spaniard, I can tell you that this car's history is hugely related with Spain's motor industry's history. The "Ford Acts" ("Decretos Ford") meant the liberalization of the spanish motor industry, which was hugely regulated during Francisco Franco's autarchic regime. The first car to be made under that new regulation was the Fiesta. That's why the Ford Acts were called like that. That's also why the Fiesta has a spanish name ("fiesta" means "party" in spanish) and that's why as Mr Regular points out at 1:10, there's a engine option called "Valencia", which is the region of Spain where the car is built.

Excellent review. One small point though: The Fiesta was never a Golf competitor; Ford had the Escort for that. The Fiesta went up against the Volkswagen Polo, which you also didn't get in 'Murka.

Yep. I owned a 1979 for a spell in 1987. I bought it from a good friend for about 500 bucks. It took me on a multi-month U.S.A. trip. The CV went first about two months in. Then, a few weeks later, the brake job it received out-paced my wallet (and the car's value), so I signed it over to the shop who had fixed it.

Exactly how I feel about my Escort. It's gotten to the point where my friends and co-workers keep asking when I'm gonna scrap it and get a new car. I've invested much time and money into it, and want to keep it as long as I can. Yes, it's a slow "grandma car," but it's my car. It's my first car. Mr Regular I would like to apply for the position of Research Assistant when it opens up for your channel. Yes, the USA DID get this car. Way back in 1977. When the CAFE mileage rules started to come into play. (in stock form it was rated at 42mpg highway) We lost the car after 1980 when the CAFE rules started enforcing a "domestic content" rule which classified the Fiesta as a "captive import" and disqualified using it to offset things like the Mercury Grand Marquis. The USA version had the cross-flow 1600cc engine from the Cortina (the block of which was the one designated for the Formula Ford open-wheeled racing series) The USA ones were generally built in either Germany or Spain. The UK actually got a series with a Lotus twincam version of the 1600, special wheels, etc. And a big giant helping of torque steer. Alden

1379 I thought you only got the mk1 from 1977 To 1980? Looking examples on Google it seems all the mk1s in the USA had the same headlights and bumpers as the mk1 XR2 models here save for the longer bumper endcaps in Europe. I think it's awesome the humble little fiesta so common on UK roads made it to the USA, too 😎
@Jim7316s
@Jim7316s 5 лет назад
This is true. My dad bought one new, I think it was a '79. I remember commuting in it later, during the mid-80s. It buzzed loudly at highway speeds, drowning out the radio, thanks in part to the 4-speed manual and short gearing, but also due to the spartan interior that left bits of body-colored sheet metal visible. The car in the video was plush by comparison, with door panels that completely covered the metal. However it was a blast tearing through the streets of an industrial park, sliding through all the low speed corners. On 155 section tires, what else could it do? Good times!
@Jim7316s
@Jim7316s 5 лет назад
@@skippythetubrat - Wrong! The PlyDodge Omnirizon had some commonality with the Rabbit, IIRC. But the Fiesta was the proud product of Ford of Europe. And if you had ever parked them side by side, you could see it was slightly smaller than the Rabbit, while the Omnirizon looked like a 4-door Rabbit with a sloping front end grafted on.

The 1.1 screaming at 70? You should try the 957cc version. These had bodywork like tin foil. Mk2s got a 1.6 Diesel engine which was too heavy for the car, and would cause stress fractures aft of the strut turrets on the inner wings.

Had one of these as my first car - the 1.6l Diesel version with 54hp :-) Great little car, nothing really ever went wrong (because there was nothing there which could go wrong...). Got it when I was 18 and finished school, we even went from Germany to the top of Scotland in it on a 3 week camping trip - with 4 people in the car plus sleeping bags/tent/... :-) Best thing was that during the time I had it, there was a rise in demand for small Diesel cars due to gas prices etc, so I was able to sell it after 3 years for the same price I bought it at.

Back in the late 80's-late 90's, a friend of mine had several, one he drove & the others existed to help keep the one he drove alive. It was his bad weather daily. His good weather daily was a Harley that was also a creation built from countless other carcasses.

You can't compare the Fiesta to a Golf. The Golf is a class higher. The equipment with 4 gears, no armrests, tachometer etc. is normal for basic cars, even from the early 90s. And most of them are great fun! I loved my first Peugeot 106!

I drove a '74 Fiesta as a winter car a couple years in high school. 4 speed, long throws, excellent to launch over hills into large snow drifts. Ice makes for horrible motor mounts as that particular engine was the antithesis of refinement. Best $250 bucks dad ever spent.

My first new car purchased in St.Loius, MO. In 1980 was a 1980 Ford Fiesta imported from Germany. Great vehicle!

Don't be such a liar! I owned 3 US spec Ford Fiestas, model years 1979, 1979 & 1980! Built in West Germany and imported to the US, they were a short term answer to Ford's lack of a cheap, fuel efficient small vehicle. Cheap and fun to drive, they were super bare bones and slow as fuck, but they always felt a lot faster than they actually were! Later to be replaced by the far inferior Escort.

Hear hear! I owned a 1980 "north american" Fiesta. Up here in the rust belt it turned into a pile of corrosion faster than I could patch it up, but damn it I loved that car :)

The Fiesta first came to the US as the Mk1, starting in '78, and was discontinued in '80. I believe the second version to hit the US market was the Mk6 in 2009.

I remember the Fiesta being sold in the United States in the late 1970s and early 1980s. "The US Mark I Fiesta was built in Cologne, West Germany, but to slightly different specifications; US models were Base, Decor, Sport, and Ghia, the Ghia having the highest level of trim. These trim levels changed very little in the Fiesta's three-year run in the US, from 1978 to 1980."

I have owned two of these. First I had one with 1.0l engine and it was one of firsts made as it was made in 1984. It had different dashboard than the one reviewed in this video and it had thin steering wheel not like at the video. Another one was made in 1988 and had similar dashboard like this one in video, but it also had 1.4l 75 horsepower CVH engine.

Dude, so much space in that little engine bay! That thing must be a dream to work on... you don't even need an engine hoist to change the clutch, you'd just prop the block up with a piece of wood and slide the tranny out. So much room all the way around the engine, a basic toolkit could do almost all maintenance.
