The Pistons were my team as a kid. Love these old games. Man, AD traveled A LOT. I remember being heartbroken when they traded him, but looking back at these old games and hearing interviews with players from that era, AD was interested in his minutes and his stats. It's ironic that Aguirre, viewed as a malcontent in Dallas, ended up being a great, selfless teammate in Detroit - taking HIMSELF out of the starting lineup to make room for Rodman who was developing into something special. Good memories.

Dominique had Whitman wide open for a layup when he was triple teamed on that last shot!! 😢😢 Great game. Even though I hated the Pistons at the time, I love watching them. Nostalgia's definition (for me) is "Old School Basketball". Thanks for the memories!!

What a stark contrast for Atlanta in this series vs 1986. They averaged 122 vs the Pistons in the 86 series. Only 102 in this one. That speaks to Detroit’s commitment to defense after being eliminated the year before

That transition the Pistons made from guys like Tripuka, Terry Tyler, John Long Dan Roundfield and Kent Benson to Mahorn, Rodman, Salley and Dumars really changed the trajectory of that team. They really morphed into the Bad Boys during this time. And I'm a Celtics fan - with alot of respect for what the Pistons did. I mean I effing hated them. But they were great and have the 2 titles to show for it. They really earned those titles. It wasn't easy to break the strangle hold the Celtics and Lakers had on the league. I mean having to overcome Larry Bird and the Celtics and then Magic with the Lakers. This Piston team ended 2 dynasties in a 3 year period. Pretty impressive

Great game. Really good content, man. I'll watch any playoff game from the 80s that you post. It's a shame YT blocked a lot of old games for copyright reasons.

“Copyright” more like trying to hide real basketball and force the idea that a certain someone isn’t on steroids and is actually really good at basketball..

What an astonishing match. The 80's basket is the best era from this sport (ien Europe too). And the game was that good that we could watch matches beyond Lakers and Celtics (I am a fan from both) because these Pistons were a solid team and thr hawks were the more showtime tram in the entire competition. Excellent match and thanks for the upload.

As a 13 year old Celtics fan in 1987 - it was actually Atlanta that I worried about and who I thought we were gonna play in the ECF in 87. Atlanta had beating Detroit in 4 games in 86 (best of 5). Atlanta won 57 games to Detroit's 52 and if Atlanta had beating Boston in Boston on the seasons final game they would have been the #1 seed. I was really focused on Atlanta - in fact it wasn't till about midway through game 3 vs Detroit in 87 when I finally realized " oh shit - Detroit is for real. But I still remember as a kid predicting Atlanta to win this series. I was so wrong

I think you've set the RU-vid record for references in one post to Atlanta. There's no way anyone anywhere has referenced Atlanta this much in one place. And with this reply I'm now second. Seriously though Detroit's additions of Rodman and Salley in the '86 draft and Dumars' added influence seemed to be the difference makers in laying the foundation for the rugged team they would become, with the later Aguirre addition putting them over the top. And not a rugged team like my Knicks would morph into; they could also put the ball in the hole. A case could be made for Detroit as the best team in the league over a four year stretch (87-90). Boston just wasn't the same team in '87 as they were ravaged with injuries. The games in Detroit weren't close, plus Milwaukee pushed you all the way to 7 in the previous round. And then of course Isiah getting injured in '88 was a killer. Overall Detroit just doesn't get the love it deserved. There are certainly surface reasons for this, but in general this period was basically Detroit's brief wrecking of the NBA's royalty party among the L.A. Lakers, Boston and of course later, Chicago. They were the chosen ones and Detroit sort of existed only in a vacuum.

I always rooted for mj and the bulls but I always had the hawks #2 and looking at players and ppg I was always surprised Cleveland wasn't a championship team back in the 90s

They might have, but they could not stay healthy and could not get past the Bulls, like everyone else. Also, trading Ron Harper was idiotic and really set them back.

The Hawks started believing their own press about being the team to dethrone the Celtics they forget about beating the Pistons first.

People always talk about the Bulls and pistons but really the Hawks and the Celtics were the Pistons biggest rivals, Bulls weren’t even really a threat

I loved Dominique but his defense against Dantley in the first half was horrible. It was like he didn't want to make contact at all. And that last shot for Atlanta, they took way too long to get into a play.
