In this video we take a close up look of a 1987 Gibson ES335. This is one special guitar that can do a wide range of styles. Not only is it a beautiful guitar, it sounds amazing and plays like a dream. The blonde/natural look of it is very eye catching and reminiscent of the 1957 model it replicates so well. Check out the video for a closer look inside and out as well as a cool jam/sound demo at the end. Please subscribe!

Sounds great and great condition. That’s a keeper for sure! Do you know where the guitar came from? You might be able to find out more by providing the serial number to Gibson. Maybe they can tell you if a specific shop got it or a salesman. If you can trace more of the history, it’ll probably be worth more. People like a good guitar story and unusual markings. The other marking in the pickup cavity is probably the person who inspected the guitar body. I bet Gibson may have some info about that too. Or you could always try reaching out to Trogly, but he might charge you for it. He has good contacts who can probably help you find out more details and put a value on it.

I'm in Nashville and the guy I bought it from got it from Gibson directly. I guess it was some form of payment for a sound job he did for them?? I wish I had more info. Trogly would be a good guy to contact. I may just do that.

I’d guess the “not for sale” model makes it worth more than the average guitar. In my experience with all things collectible, not just guitars, the more rare something is the more expensive it gets at least for the right buyer. Beautiful guitar, thanks for sharing 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Silver coloured screws with the Pat No stamp, those are most probably PU490, which were the standard Gibson pickups at the time. If you take the covers off, they will most probably have the matt Schaller bobbins. I have them in my SG, good pickups. 😊

I picked up a nice Epi 335 custom with a bigsby. Had to! It's pretty much a full on Gibby. Was hesitant spending a grand on it until I played it. Yup just as well say it's a Gibby. Sold! I love it and it can get down and dirty with the best solid bodies!

My thoughts on the not for sale is that it is worth more. Great guitar Marty

Beautiful guitar Marty, sounds great especially when you turned it up !!! I like the "not for resale stamp" to me that makes it more desirable in my humble opinion. Thank you for sharing it Marty 👍

So cool! I had a '67 tobacco sunburst ES335, pearl dot inlay, orange label. People made fun of me & said the guitar was bigger than me, so like a fool I traded it for a Gibson Firebrand (stripped down Les Paul) and a Music Man 75 watt 2x12 amp. Still have the amp. Pawned the LP to get a Marshall jcm900. Oh the deals we make! Lol Love the tremelo effect BTW.

Aw!!! That sucks. I hear you. I traded a flame top explorer e/2 for a digitech FX processor in the late 80's. 😩

Love the natural finish, cant hide the imperfections with finish color Semi hollows force you to turn the gain down and play the more straight tone to Im not a big guy and with quality amps i always preferred the 339 smaller body

I have a 83, 335 great guitar and mine does have Shaws. Shaws look exactly like those but had a six digit rubber stamped number along with the pat. number. Mine also have long legs. By 87 they could be Shaws, My rubber stamp #'s are almost gone and by 87 some didn't have it. they also by then had Shaw's with short legs. One thing from looking outside Shaw covers were usually longer like those. I had an 86 Shaw that was identical to those. Measured about 7.5k. There are other internal things to identify Shaw's. The ones in my 335 measure about 7.4k each. Yea these are Norlin guitars but guess what, mine play's and sounds superb.

That's an absolute 💯 stunning guitar. I don't know what the pickups are? I wouldn't worry about that because they sound sweet. You looked if you could play that thing all day long Marty. A guitar like that deserves to be played the way that you played it there. I think that a wee bit of history behind it would probably increase its value. You should watch the latest " That Pedal Show " on RU-vid. The guy changes his pickups on his Gibson es 335 guitar and it's interesting the difference it makes 😉

Thanks so much man! I love the guitar, it's so resonant. I can play it for hours. I gigged with it recently and it was a dream. It can handle about anything you throw at it. And it feeds back on tune. And controlled. It's amazing. I'll check out that episode man. Thanks!

@Marty5150 It's actually really funny man 🤣 it will make you think twice if you go to change those pickups. You will see what I mean when you watch it.

I had one that was a 79 blond like that. Traded for a new amp,Japanese Strat-best one I have owned so far & a effects processor. It supposedly was sold to someone in Japan for over $10K back in the late 1990’s.

yup, excellent guitar indeed. I have the exact same (made in 86') in a vintage brown-burst finish. The only other difference is that mine has an ABR1 springlocked bridge, and yours is a Nashville style.

I have a set of Shaw pickups on my flying V, but they are dirty fingers so it's really easy to tell what they are, the double row of tunable slugs gives them away . Have you ever measured the impedancef of those pups? BTW that's a sweet looking axe, I think the not for sale stamp might increase it's value to the right person. I have always loved the look of those natural finished 335's.

That body is Maple you can tell by the Birdseye on the front and back the neck is definitely mahogany years alittle late for Tim Shaws but that I'm not sure of nice 335 👍

Yeh I figured maple. It's pretty dang heavy man. But it's a chimey and soulful beast! I think these are probably classic 57's??
