Welcome to a new build. One that is going to put up a huge fight and test my patience.
One of Scott’s earliest mountain bikes, this one has come equipped with the MT60 groupset. Surprisingly, at this time, the MT60 was the lower groupset as the only other available happened to be the M730 (XT) variant. Progress through the years and the MT60 keeps its second place in the hierarchy eventually turning in to the DX group. Not a bad find then! This well equipped bike only needed the wheels and the crankset to make it complete again and they were supplied by Marcin @ www.ebay.co.uk...
This particular bike has had a hard life. Bought by its previous owner in the early 90s, it had been ridden continuously and it showed. The stem and headset had rusted to the fork steerer from the years of Peak District weather. The seat post, not needing to be adjusted, had welded itself to the frame. The bottom bracket had been replaced but the “new” version came with weakened plastic cups that would need a special touch to remove. Finally, the paintwork... the one deep, bright pink had faded to almost white after years of riding and the black had countless chips to its once gloss finish.
This bike will get restored back to its former glory and I’m looking forward to it. Subscribe to see the finished bike in the near future.

Hi, has this a 130mm rear end? I like bikes with U- Brake bosses behind the bottom bracket, because of the clean looks - all cables under the downtube - and the brake functioning really great. Chainstays seem to be not to very long and it has vertical dropouts, plus the nice chainstay protector - nice find. 'Ride In Style' (Scott USA)

Have you ever heard of an 1:1 aceton-ATF mixture? It is supposed to be the best penetrating fluid. I think you should try that in the future.

Great video. I’m particularly interested in how you are dissolving the seat post with caustic soda as I have a couple of mid 90s bike with the same problem. How long do you leave it in until you refresh the solution? What’s the acid water ratio? Cheers

I had a Scott Sawtooth and it was a great bike. I bought used on craigslist, cleaned it up and eventually gave it to a friend's grandson.

Really enjoyed this detail level, and appreciated how much work is involved. But most of all I respect the knowledge imparted on the walk around in the beginning.

Something about these old Scott mtbs. There was a ton of thought that went into the design and build of those bikes. Such a gorgeous era of cycling

I've still got this to do! It was such a nightmare but I've since found out it might be a "special edition" of some sort. It has a 001 serial number!

@@blipco5 lol, at least now I'm not feeling so alone. I was thinking maybe I should be staring out the window and listening to some vintage Madonna. And I grin, but this rebuild does bring to light a forgotten bit about that decade, the popular use of colors like pink and yellow and teal. And neon, lots of neon.

Don't add a seatpost clamp. Just ride it around and aim for speed bumps. That'll knock it loose!

wow lot of work, glad i came across your sight, do you no if i can fit a deore 7 speed thumb shifter, to a lx 7 speed bracket, i was thinking of undoing the deore and fitting it to my brake lever bracket, but i notice they have pins in the bottom, thank you.

just a quick one, do not attempt to unscrew the cap of the thumb shifters, they unscrew from the bottom, and also the nuts are anti clockwise, inside.

Last resort. Caustic soda will chew through the alloy and leave the steel tube untouched. :)

MT-60 doesn't have two zeros in it! The idea of the chainstay is that the spokes are twin function - they're spare spokes, but they also act as a chainstay protector.

The latest stuck seatpost I had (91 Wheeler 5500 with 30mm seatpost), was far down in the seat tube, about 25 cm IIRC. What I did, I took a piece of wood, sawed it to fit inside the seat post (as it cracked when I tried to clamp it on a vise and turn the whole frame). Then I took a hacksaw blade and sawed a groove on to the wood. Then I had another piece of wood to make a handle, that I splitted at the end and screwed the end of the saw blade to it. I bought a high quality (Sandvik) big toothed hacksaw blade to cut through the aluminium more quickly and easily. The process still took ages but I did just two cuts and managed to cut all the way down on the post. There was no post sticking out anymore so I didn't have anything to grasp on to pull it out. So I went and drilled a hole on the back where there is a slot on the seat tube. Then I used a punch and a hammer on that hole to get the post moving up. I had to drill at least 4 holes to get the punch to sit right in between the seat stays and eventually got the seatpost punched out. Also for some weird reason (frozen water or something) the seat tube had dents and bulges on it and I figured the seatpost must be really stuck.
