Back when GM listened to its truck customers that used them for work and made changes/features that made the truck more useful, durable, serviceable, but still affordable. Nowadays, who the heck knows.
Damn!!! Nice! I wish I had A GMT400 4WD truck right now, I used to have a 1996 Suburban K1500 w/5.7 Vortec V8 and then later I ended up getting a 1992 C1500 extended cab w/5.7 TBI V8 that was lowered and had a full sport body kit that replaced all the side body panels and front and rear bumpers, made it look really bad ass, like a nascar/muscle truck…..The GMT400 had a very simple yet beautiful classic timeless design….
THANK YOU, GM AND CHEVROLET!!!! YOU GUYS DID AN AWSOME JOIB WITH YOUR MAJOR OVERHAUL!!!! IT IS A CLASSIC NOW!!!! WITH A CULT FOLLOWING!!!! I LOVE YOU AND I THANK YOU.
In the Late-1980's for 1987, Ford have changed their F-Series, got a new body style for the front, and back rear. They wanted to take the original body look from 1979-1986 and turn it into a brand new sleek look for the Late-1980's, and have the same new body look for the 1990's too. Chevy and GMC on the other hand kept the original body look from 1973-1986, and they have used that same body look for the Late-1980's as of 1987 in which it became the final year for that style. Around that year, the new Ford F-Series was whooping the old Chevy and GMC in its commercials just like it was a tug of war to see who would bring home title. Around the following year of the Late-1980's for 1988, Chevy and GMC have changed their body type to give it a much more better sleek, smooth, and of course a stronger💪body style. Since Ford change their body style with the F-Series and has been hogging all of the spotlight in whooping GM's ass, Chevy and GMC has changed their trucks, and got back at Ford by whooping their ass. People have been switching from Ford to GM and have been making a change of heart❤️. In your face Ford. Beat that.
I wish I could meet each and everyone of them and shake their hand my truck I've had for over 20 years in the family I've put over 400,000 miles on it it's been the most reliable pick up I've ever owned and still on it to this day it has a 4.3 Vortech V6 which I have replaced once three years ago because the old one was burning too much oil and came with from the factory believe it or not with a turbo 400 transmission which I had to rebuild one time and the original axles which all I've done is change the bearings and the c clips they are incredible under appercated trucks and i will always love them dearly
I was attending the University of North Dakota in 1987. I recall in the local newspaper an article about GM taking preproduction 1988 GMT 400 trucks to North Dakota to validate their HVAC systems...this was in January during a bitter cold snap. They had a picture of two of the trucks being tested and it looked so radically different than the OBS previous generation.
The elephant in the room - development started in 1982 and consumer clinics in '83. This was one of those programs that was delayed by Roger Smith's massive reorg which was why the launch wasn't until 1987 as an '88 model.

This is amazing stuff, and shows a fair bit of surprising content given how carefully orchestrated any film shot within Design Center is. The large semi tractor clay model is what was being proposed for a Brigadier class 7/8 replacement. Like the GMT530 TopKick that followed, it would use a 400 cab, but use a nose similar to a design being pitched at the time for an updated General conventional. At least one running "AeroBrigadier" prototype was built, but likely scrapped. GM Heritage Center does, however, have one large scale model of the Aero Brigadier within its collection to this day.
Those replaced the square body models, but just the two-door cab pickups at the time & it wasn't until 1992 when all of the rest of the square body models were replaced.
The October 1985 Popular Mechanics magazine contained a "Spy Photo" of a 1988 C2500 out testing in the Snow without Camo. First time I saw one of these and it was cool.
@@daneanders7051 I have the magazine from 1985. If you have a Facebook tell me what name you're under and I'll take a pic and send it to you. It has a pic of a White C2500 Regular Cab Longbed out testing in the Snow and then Popular Mechanics did an article on what to expect with this new generation truck as far as cab options and engine choices. Very interesting read.
Last year GM made a cool truck. The newer Denalis are nice but so is their price tag. Everything about these trucks scream blue collar. I have 2 a 1994 extended cab GMC and a 1988 standard cab Chevy 4x4.
If you would park a factory 88 to 98 Chevy or GMC beside a 2019 to 2023 the older truck still looks sleeker and more aerodynamic. The new one looks like a cardboard box especially in the back. Always liked GM trucks but would look to another brand for a new one
I think the 88 and newer Chevy is one of the nicer driving highway trucks, comfortable seating nice ac although the 88-94 controls can be a pain. I just wish at the time they would have continued some features that made a GM truck a GM truck ,like the double wall steel roof, and the bolt together pick up box,but progress, and cost cutting along with change can't be avoided.
Fast forward to 2024....make the thermostat housing one entire assembly....and make it out of plastic! And put a clause in the warranty that if its used to full payload it voids the warranty! Meanwhile at Ford: put a rubber timing belt in the engine....no seal it inside the engine with the oil....and do the same for the oil pump! And any part that's not the block or head needs to be plastic! No not that! The cheapest plastic! Its got to last....4 years. Meanwhile at Jeep: This wiring loom is already splitting and corroded from the supplier?....chuck it on there who cares. Marketing will offer free roadside assistance.
