Jimmy Free was tired of paying high rent in Santa Monica. He bid on this 1988 Crown Coach Bus and converted it into a mobile tiny home complete with granite counter tops. Music Artist: Color Animals Song: Sparkly Sounds
Love the bus, love the bed, and counter top, and absolutely love the tub. But dude either cut the mop or tie it up, you're freaking me out playing with it. Thanks for sharing your bus.
I love how simple it is,and a tip to keep the bus warm with a wood stove is to add a stone tile/brick wall on at least two sides behind the stove and beside the stove this is to absorb some of the heat and transfer it to the air at a extended rate. And from the research I've done the best wood stove for RVs and conversions will be a Kimberly stove. Some reflextics on the windows at night will help keep hot air in on cold nights
wide awake : I agree. That wood burner can heat a house easily, no reason why not, if the bus was properly insulated with air circulation should bake the exterior paint right off the bus.
You did a SUPER job! The double tier utensil drawer is perfect...remember wood shrinks and swells anyway in various heat, damp, cold environments. Small heater in bed area, or even a hot water bottle, the old style, in the bed with you, wrap a towel around it...they start out really hot!
Really great bus, cool owner. Regarding the wood burner, as I understand it, most of the heat you get from them is radiated from the flue. The flue on this set up is very short. If it could be extended to spend more time inside the bus before exiting you will certainly notice a big difference.
That bus could haul 50 adults in 25 steel seats... weight is not a problem. I would insulate the ceilings with at least R6 foam. You do have a lot of stuff that would be flying around if you were to have a wreck... I have a 26 ft bluebird flat nose diesel that I am converting.
Your chakras are all so open and balanced. Love the white clothes! This is my first video of yours I’ve watched. I cannot understand why people think they need to comment negatively. Keep your hair. Do what makes you happy.
Jimmy. You have a lovely home, I am very happy for you. It's a beautiful place to be and yes you do not need fancy this and that, practical and effective and especially good wood. I wish you a long and happy healthy life together, regular maintenance on the bus saves you big and unwanted bills. Enjoy.
Awesome bus. Crown coach made very durable and reliable trucks/ busses, I've been a Crown Junky since I was a kid. Growing up in Upland,Ca our school district used Crown busses and the Upland fire dept had Crown fire engines, as a matter of fact, the Upland fire dept has restored one of their Crown engines that was in service when I was a kid in the 70's and is still in service today. the fire engine was outfitted with polished Alcoa aluminum wheels, new paint and lots of chrome accents. You should look into a product called "Dynamat" which is an awesome very lightweight insulation and sound proofing material or use expansion foam. With the size of that wood burner, you can heat a moderate size house with it. Great video and thank you for sharing. Kind regards, Eric Dee.
Nice job on the bus. Very nice. When you have a space that small and are willing to put a bath tub in there that is that big.... it would be a fair thing to assume that the guy likes taking baths. I have watched a bunch of these bus conversion videos and I don't recall ever seeing a full bath tub in any of the other buses.
Love the interior paint job, If the ceiling wasn't taken down then insulated and the windows are single pane that is where the heat is going. Convection, the cold surfaces are just sucking the heat out of the bus.
I SURE AS HELL HOPE HE ANCHORED THE GRANITE DOWN HE MIGHT WEAR IT SOMEDAY IF HE HAS TO STOP SUDDEN. THERE IS MORE THAN ONE REASON TO PUT LIGHT WEIGHT THINGS IN A MOVING VEHICLE.
Beautiful build. Pretty sure we're all worried about weight for gas mileage though, not whether or not the bus will hold it. And to those that really care about this guy's hair or "tripped out" by it, you purely wasted an opportunity to be kind or keep the negativity to yourself. So odd how humans feel good being cruel to other humans. Be careful with that. You could harm someone to no return regardless how insignificantly you think your words should be taken (that part isn't up to you). Fortunately, this guy very likely does not care about such comments at this point in his life. Be kind, people.
Not only are your windows losing heat at a rapid rate, but it looks like the roof of your bus is completely uninsulated. School buses lose heat much faster than any other vehicle that comes to mind. Solution windows: Reflectix, like someone else mentioned, is great for reflecting radiant heat and privacy. If you want or need the light, use 1/2 inch bubble wrap. Not as efficient as Reflectix (radiant heat only), but lets the light in and gives you some privacy. Solution roof: Insulate! Don't attach Reflectix to the metal as it is very bad at conductive heat insulation. There are different foam boards you can buy, and I would spend the money to get the higher R-factor per inch poly-iso foam, though finding it in thin sheets (to bend to the roof curvatures) is hard to comeby at any of the big box stores. But, even the cheap polystyrene will make a huge difference in heat retention, and since you won't be walking on it, it will hold up. You should also think about insulating the walls and floor, but insulating the roof and windows will probably be enough for you in mild climates. BTW, very nice interior aesthetics!
I love the body style and shape of the bus. And with the curved roof it has a lot more head room than newer school buses. But I’m funny about my privacy, I’d have a wall or at least a curtain to separate the bedroom while I was sleeping.
It doesn't concern me but you commented oh my God a tub on a bus. I'm just pointing out the downfall in that design. That any water you use has to be carried, which means more wear and tear on vehicle and less fuel efficiency. To me it would be lovely to have a bath in that environment (with some window coverings) but I wondered how he would fill it.
Happy Friday...none of that matters to me cause I don't even know this guy or nor will I ride on his bus. I'm sure he'll figure that out or not. Either way a tub on a bus is still a NICE FEATURE...a comment is just a comment... FYI the OMG is not Oh my God it's OH MY GOSH.
bubble wrap used as sheer curtains are great insulation. with a little water (say a spray bottle) the bubble wrap actually sticks to the glass .... plus the light still comes through...and if you do need to see out just peel it back. you may need a piece or two of masking tape on the top corners. A double layer works even better. just a thought... It comes in good size rolls at wal mart in the office department sold for packaging. all the best - great rig!
Come on people!! The bus 🚌 was awesome 👏 and so was the guy’s hair. What good would such long, thick, curly locks be if he didn’t fuss with it? It is habit and it’s cool 😎 like him. He’s probably really fun to hang out with! Hair rocks!!!💫
I could freaking watch this video ten times over, and I LOVE this bus, and I’m sure Jimmy’s a great guy. Hey, he’s a starving musician, cut him some slack. He’s a rock star kinda guy. Love the hair, though when making informational bus conversion vids, a hair tie, or tee shirt Turpin might be beneficial. Love the vibes, but some things might be a bit ‘wonky’. That’s ok, you’ll figure it all out, after all, “The bus don’t care!” 😁😘🙏💜 Hey Jimmy, enjoy the ride! More videos! I’m a fan!😄
Personally, I liked the emptiness. It's refreshing not to see possessions piled high, sat in boxes doing nothing. If you don't use it everyday then pass it on or if you must, sell it.
wide awake I like OPENNESS not emptiness. But correct all the room n ways to do these busses. .. And half these people are bordered, cluttered, and disorganized. They aren't minimalist. I love his bus. Its beautiful
Your bus has definitely been styled a bit differently than a lot of others in vids I've watched. The wood looks terrific. Lots of good comments here from people in the know concerning insulation, wood stove, etc. I definitely would have used a rail system on the drawers. The dish rack is unique and cool but will those items be airborne weapons when you have to nail your brakes hard? And it's all about insulating these metal boxes to control your environment. Here's my 2 cents: As a musician, I've been assembling a home studio myself. All the research indicates that it's better to set your monitors up to throw the sound down the longer length of the room. Has to do with reflections, standing waves, echoes, etc. Much better/more accurate for recording and particularly mixing. I do like the simplified, clean look.
WITHOUT DOUBT, THE BES . BUS BUILD I HAVE EVER SEEN, AND I HAVE SEEN HUNDREDS ~~ I MEAN IT, I HAVVE SEEN HEAPS AND THIS IS THE BET, THE BATH, THE BED, THE COUNTER TOPS, YOUR STUDIO ~~ CAN YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH A REBUILT BUS ????? I HAVE. !!!! CHEERS FROM AUSTRALIA!!!!! Alison xoxox
Alison Dawson .....Just because you're from the bottom of the planet doesn't mean you have to use caps lock to get your point across......We can all read...... Also, this bus would be no good for you down there......no A/C....?..... you'd cook in a day.
wide awake Does it make you feel good to pick on ppl? You condescending pig!! Maybe Allison from Australia was very EXCITED!!! MAYBE IT WAS A MISTAKE??? Maybe it's none of you fucking business how she writes. Hmmm? Get a perfect life and maybe then when your Jesus perfect you can make ppl feel low and get away with it. Do you even care that maybe you hurt her? GET A LIFE YOU PIECE OF SHIT! 😘
Like the bus..needs a few more things...insulation, plus window sealer ?? I like that you left the windows as is..A lot of time and cost was saved!! If you wanted you could smoke the glass etc, for more privacy...l also like the shape of the old bus...could you talk about the engine a bit??Over all l think it is a nice, well built bus....
I absolutely love the bus. Doesn’t appear that you insulated? Perhaps that’s why it’s cold? Also, doesn’t granite stay cold? Maybe adds to the lower temp? Do love this! 🤗💜🙏
You must be aware of the weight. Too much will cause premature wear on the drivetrain/suspension. As well, I noticed you covered up the engine access panels in the floor with the hard wood... Not good.
This guy has no idea and sees this as just space. He is completely unaware of so many, many factors that he will eventually discover... if he doesn't die of carbon monoxide poisoning or freeze to death it's just another Crown headed to the junkyard in a couple of years...
Curley, it's not my bus... Superb Media Content Creator Well it was up on Craigslist a while back for an astronomical price ( $32,500) but the posting expired. So either some schmuck picked it up for that or people were smart, took one look and didn't bother any further.
I dont think the weight he has in there is a problem other than it is not equally distributed, but this thing was clearly made for looks not actual living. no fridge no curtains no insulation, no way to service the engine as you mentioned he covered the overhead access which are pretty important. massive way oversized tub, total waste of space and is not going to be used as a tub. al together this was made to resell to someone who doesnt know anything about mobile living
There's a urine diverter which is like a funnel mounted to the front of the sitting area. Separating these two is crucial to this system as they don't play well together haha!
Clank crash clank. Awkward pause struggling with drawer. "The point is that they can't move around." Then pulls out unfettered drawer free to slide all over the bus. 10/10 for stupid
you need to at least line the thing with some cheap insulation like reflectix or something. That, some thin foam and some light cloth or carpet to make it pretty would see a tremendous improvement in the heating!
Love the bus and its conversion for sure... But?, is it Insulated all over the walls? , if not, then the heat energy wasted and oh boy, It is not safe without the heating stove being surrounded with heat-resistant tiles or Metal..§ You need Thick Insulated Curtains too...A Lovely Comfy Lounge suite is needed I think, yes? As much as I do like what was done interior wise, there is No privacy for the LOO §
The floors have 1 - 1/2" of plywood then I put 1/4" of cork followed by 3/4" hickory which probably gives me R-3 in the floor. The walls up to the window have 3/4 rigid foam, 1/4" cork and 3/4" hickory. The ceiling is insulated from the factory.
Yes Georgia! Haha! It's a state in our union. About 3000 miles from where I did the conversion so I had to hire a truck to transport it. UPS doesn't deliver those kind of loads. I use the word import because it means bringing something in from another region. Sorry to confuse you so much.
jimmybefree I’m from the south and now I live in the Pacific Northwest and I totally understood what you meant. It is like importing and the 2000 mile plus relocation I did was killer on me. Yes, my brain 🧠 registered what imported meant in this case right away. Love everything!!! 💫
Ooookk... so your weight of the buss is defined by what the frame and engine is able to safely carry.. your still subject to the gmv and can by put out of service for being over weight until you have taken something out permanently to lighten the load.
SpaceFlye me like a lot of people don't want it to feel or look like a home but more like our room. Some place your always comfy where it doesn't feel like you are always in a house but a mystery mobile you could say.
Where is fridge? Open toilet ,guess coming rainy day snowy day, please step outside ,I need to poo, in middle of the night. Hippie type , . Otherwise I like the cleaness and bedroom.
And yet another build with the toilet directly opposite the kitchen. So incredibly gross!!!!!! Other than that build is nice but very heavy & stove should not be that close to the front that is why he is losing so much heat. .
You're right. It seems most people wiggle their bottoms franticly while pooping sending it flying across the room. Thankfully through years of concentrated practice I've learned to sit still. :)
Great space but I was so distracted by U grabbing at your hair constantly, that I probably missed half of it. Just thinking if it bothers U so much, why not cut it or tie it back. ✂💺
