1988 Hatteras 65C S1-E3: Florida to Texas Cruise

This is the next video in the series on our 1988 Hatteras 65C sport fishing yacht. In this episode we share footage from our Florida to Texas cruise home after purchase of the yacht.
The trip took 7 days, and 5 of them had weather ranging from bad to worse. We did get a couple of good days to make better time and smoother running. This video ended up being another doozy, but we have tried to provide enough detail and information to help you see what it is like to make a trip like this. We have not seen a similar effort and hope that the daily still shots of the map help you to see how we progressed. There were a couple of mechanical issues which came up during the trip but none that were show stoppers, so we were able to adjust and move ahead.

Some take aways from this video, which I just saw. In the late 70's I had the pleasure of delivering a total of 4 Hatteras Sport Fish, 3 60's and 1 65', from the plant to the west coast. 1 to Acapulco, 1 Chile, 1 to San Diego, and 1 to Anchorage. Great boats. We ran with a crew of 3. We also ran at or below displacement speeds, which generally was round 8 knots (disp speed is respectively 9.5 knots and 10 knots) This speed provided a tremendous fuel savings and much extended range. Every 6 hours we would open them up for 30 minutes to blow the "crud" out. The trips were of course all through the Panama Canal. The route was generally this; High Point to Fort Lauderdale, Ft. Lauderdale to Cozumel, Cozumel to the Panama Canal - for the boats going north, the Panama Canal to Punta Arenas Costa Rica, then on to Acapulco, for two boats, Acapulco to Capo San Lucas, then on to San Diego, for one boat San Diego to Monterrey, Monterey to Victoria BC, then up the inland passage to Anchorage. For the one going south Panama to Guayaquil, Equador, to Callao Peru, and then on to Arica Chile and finally on to Valparaiso. All but one was with the open fly bridge. For the South American trip we did have 2 bladder tanks of 150 gallons each in the cockpit, which meant a boat way out of trim until they were consumed.

Thank you for watching and the comment. Those have to be some red letter trips my friend. Yes, many people do not believe or agree with my comments on Hull Speed, how to get it, why it is worth the time etc. so your comment rings true. Even with a full load of fuel and water we tend to "bull-doze" the ocean if we try to run on top without bladders (and you can see this in the video intro as the yacht is literally busting full, stern low, but makes 19kts). Panama is a real trick to cross these days, but I hope for the chance to help a customer through.

A well made vessel. Nice and quiet in the pilothouse. That side roll would be the most uncomfortable part of the trip. Thanks for sharing.

In trips like this and others where the weather was less than awesome, we have found the yacht can take more than the passengers - it is unstoppable. We've been duly impressed.

Just found your channel, we have a 43dc 1980. looks like you had a great run, my first mate wouldn't go on a ride like that. Just got a sub from us love your boat.

Not only do enclosed bridge boats look better, that weather is what makes them superior. I have a isinglass bridge enclosure for my boat and it’s nice to have the wind in your face, but I would prefer it to be totally enclosed.

Hello! We share your sentiment and that has been a requirement the last couple of vessels for us - you don't always need it, but when you do, you Really need it!

What sort of speed did you sit on and whats the fuel consumption like? great videos btw

Thank you for joining us. We averaged about 17kts for the trip. If we pushed it we could hit up to 20 with less fuel in the tanks (and less fresh water) but the consumption for that is almost 80gph. We averaged about 60gph and depending on wind/current/weight we saw 15-19kts. Worth noting, "hull speed" for the yacht is 10.8kts, and we can do that at 1200rpm for a sweet 20-25gph, this again varies by total weight and wind/current for speeds 9-12kts. If you have the time, a lot of $$ can be saved.

Thank you Roy, we averaged 17 over the trip, on headwinds etc it got down to 15 and on better days we made up to 19 and change. Yacht runs better now that we have tuned it up; we can hit 22 at cruise now depending on wind/current/seas.

@@MORNING-DAWN-ADVENTURES We may add the newer eddy current type stabilizers, because a sea keeper would be cost prohibitive as well as require serious work on the stringers to retain it - would be happy to have either though for sure.

Hi there, just found your channel and really enjoy the Hatt 65c content… really appreciate your DIY approach and knowledge. The FL to TX log was also helpful. I have the “little sister” 81 Hatt 43c euro, kept in Tarpon Springs/Tampa. I am upgrading and restoring a boat that was well maintained but is still in need. Keep up the awesome content!

We actually did some trolling underway with madmacs lures, but we were not setup to troll faster than about 12kts on this trip.
