A VERY early rotary voice coil drive that is equally rare.
This drive sounds like it’s in bad condition, but I don’t care because I’m very happy with it.
This will be the last 5.25" drive of the collection.
Please keep in mind that the hard drive collection is all about the sights and sounds and not functionality, which is the way I enjoy vintage hard drives.

Ah, yes, that ribbon cable connecting the PCBA to the spindle motor. I tried to get the mechanical engineering guy to do a spring finger contact but he thought they weren't reliable.

Ouchie the bearings really aren’t doing great. I’m not sure but I think it doesn’t pass the seektest as well? These are quite rare, bummer that it appears to be in rough shape

dang, they all have bad bearings huh. My 3053 sounds exactly the same, albeit somewhat worse.

Were you the one that shut the drive down? Or did it shut itself down? If you shut the drive down then the seektest did indeed pass, but the drive shutting itself off is an indication of a non-recoverable fault and it would be flashing a light on the panel if it had one.

I did shut the drive down. The click from the switch is inaudible in this recording.

Why I thought the seektest did not pass is because there's another video of a 3053 on youtube and it sounds quite different, and in that video you hear the heads parking when the drive is turned off, but here you don't hear that (also I thought the drive may have spun down by itself)

@@arnlol Not sure if it is just me but almost sounds like the drive retried whatever it was reading to seek, certainly isn't a good sign. Granted the fact that the seek doesn't sound normal either, could be suffering from media degradation or damage to one of the surfaces, granted how these still seem to function at least with quite a bit of damage to them. Does not sound normal at all for what these should seek like, bummer we don't get to see its functionality and the true condition of it but, at least we get to hear it. Assuming the drive has a lot of hours on it and has sat for some time as well given the shape of the bearings and way it acts.
