The old Big 8 was such a fun league to watch. So much offensive talent in this game with Barry Sanders, Ken Clark, Steve Taylor, Hart Lee Dykes, etc. I miss these games....thanks for posting.
An absolute blast of nostalgia...i listened to this game on the way back from a field trip as a 5th grader...it was a perfect warm fall day...and this game was so exciting...oh...and I fell in love with Barry Sanders as a husker fan lol...little did I know a short time later he would be drafted by my favorite NFL football team...
Wow! My cousin, Barry Sanders (OSU) and a guy from my old neighborhood, Lawrence Pete (Nebraska) playing against each other and they both ended up with the Lions. It made Thanksgiving at Barry's house a real thrill. You gotta love it.
I think Tyreese Knox had about a 140 yards himself in this game? Taylor must have been well over 150. One of the things I had forgotten about Tyreese is that he said he went on a diet and dropped 23 pounds before the 1988 season. I mean he still weighed 220 pounds! Tyreese was very fast and powerful, but wasn't quite as nifty or fluid of movement as Clark was. Didn't have the same quick cutting ability. Ken had really good hands and could catch the ball well coming out of the backfield too. I didn't remember that Tom Osborne tried to switch Knox to Full-Back to get he and Ken in the backfield at the same time. That apparently didn't last very long though. Knox failed to make the transition. In any case, Brian Capenter was a great Full-Back for us. @@85passthru
Wow--Steve Taylor's last nano-second pitch to a streaking Ken Clark at 20:30 is beautiful. When the option is run to such perfection, it is a truly beautiful thing to watch. I do wish the blackshirts showed more sportsmanship and didn't try to intentionally rough up Barry Sanders towards the end of the game. GBR!
Me too. In a perfect world I would have every Barry Sanders game from 1988 through 1999 on disc. I'm a lifelong Lions fan and it started for me in 1991.
Different time. Nebraska had 4 games on network tv, 2 games broadcast locally, and at least 2 broadcast by the opponent, this game and Colorado. For 1988 that was a lot of games on tv.
1987 Nebraska shut down Oklahoma State in 1988 OSU's offense went off...after NU was up 42-0. Nebraska's defense started slow in 88 but closed the year in dominate fashion give up 3 points to Colorado and Oklahoma. BTW this was a great OSU team. They should have beat OU. Great Offense. Of course OSU was also on a payroll.
After that first play, I said, "this is going to be a long day for the Huskers", boy was I right. I was there that day and Barry is the MAN! Hands-down!!
@@roselengyel2258 Gee, I didn't realize that it had already been 10 years since Ken Clark sadly passed away of a Heart Attack back in 2013. Clark was like a Mini-Rozier. Even Tom Osborne openly compared Ken's rugged Running style to Mike's. Clark wasn't as big or as fast as Rozier, but he ran violently and with purpose. Ken was incredibly strong for his size. Only 5' 9" and 195-200 pounds, yet he benched 350, and had a Hipp sled of 750 pounds. Glad his son is coming to Lincoln next year.
Clifton Garde Tom has 3 titles. Yeah couldn’t beat Switzer and player buying machine they have in Norman Oklahoma!!!! I live here in Oklahoma. I know it to be true. Hell they bought Marcus Dupree’s Mother a house. Absolute fact. Dupree admitted it.
Had a hard time against Oklahoma, beat Miami once (1994) and Florida State (86). Winningest team in the 1980’s. Lost to teams that were eventual National champs or played for championship on the line (FSU 1980), (81 Clemson) (82 PENN ST), (83 Miami), (84 Oklahoma), (85 Oklahoma), (87 Oklahoma), (90 Georgia Tech), 91 Miami), (93 Florida State), (96 Arizona St).
@@robertnoble6600 Marcus Dupree is from my home state (Mississippi). He absolutely got paid a ton. Oklahoma is to the Big 12/Big 8 what Alabama is to the SEC. They get to cheat like crazy, & it ruins the whole sport. Everyone cheats, but only a few are allowed to get away with it like those programs are.
I think that this is also a radio broadcast, so there is more of a need to call out the 5-yard increments in order to give the radio audience the mental image of the action on the field.
Nebraska fans never support their own. All these comments about Sanders but Ken Clark had 67 more yards than Sanders and didn't wait until he was behind by 42 to start.
And Ken sprained his ankle on his fifth carry and second touchdown run. Had it retaped twice. You couldn't keep him out of the ball game. The 20 yard touchdown run that was called back, was an amazing run. There used to be a highlight package of his career at Nebraska on RU-vid, but I can't find it anymore. Must have been taken down?
Ken Clark's son Quinn Clark is committed to Nebraska for next year. He is a Wide-Receiver from Montana. Like Father, Like Son? Not exactly. Ken was just 5' 9", his boy is a towering 6'5"! Another former Husker I-back Damon Benning who was a great utility player for us in the 90's son, Caleb is also committed to Nebraska for next year. Could play either offense or defense. We had Danny Noonan's son on the team, but I think he transferred after Spring practice? Former Husker All American DB Barron Miles son may or may not be still on the squad? He's only a Sophomore, if he is. He hasn't played this year. I hope that he stayed.
Wow, it's been a while since I heard Bob Barry and Tom Dirato announce a Cowboy game. I remember listening to this one on the radio and could not believe how awful they played in the first quarter. The rest of the game was actually pretty good, but there was no getting out of a 42-point hole.
