1988 Olympic Games - Swimming - Men's 100 Meter Butterfly - Anthony Nesty SUR

The best butterflyer in the world for the last 5-6 years was American Pablo Morales. But he shockingly failed to make the US team at the Olympic Trials. This left his teammate Matt Biondi in the favorite’s role in Seoul. Biondi was attempting to emulate Mark Spitz and win seven gold medals, but the night before this final, the 1988 Olympics had started poorly for him when he won “only” a bronze medal in the 200 free.
In the butterfly final, Biondi went out ahead well ahead to the wall. He led the race until the last stroke, but as he neared the wall, he was between strokes and elected to kick in, only to be slightly farther out than he realized, and this allowed Suriname’s Anthony Nesty to pass him and win the gold medal by 1/100th of a second. Nesty was not unknown, having placed fourth at the 1986 World Championships, and winning gold at the 1987 Pan American Games, but this was an upset, and it was the first Olympic medal ever won for Suriname, and also made Nesty the first black swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal.
Nesty had trained and lived and went to college in the United States for several years. But he considered Suriname home and returned to a hero’s welcome, being showered with gifts. He would return to Barcelona four years hence and add a bronze medal in this event. Biondi recovered fairly well from his poor start in Seoul, winning five golds in his last five races.

What many people don't know is that after Anthony Nesty's golden victory of 0.01 seconds over Matt Biondi on the 100 m butterfly at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, he went on to dominate the 100 m butterfly in style and grandeur for almost 3 and a half years. If it were not for injuries he would have taken gold again at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics 🏊‍♂️🥇🇸🇷🤗🇸🇷🥇🏊‍♂️

It was heartbreaking to watch as a swimmer, but as a swim coach I am maddened by Biondi's epic mistake. He had more than enough room to take another stroke instead of the long glide.

Nesty was the only one with the discipline to stop breathing a meter or two before the flags, coupled with Biondi coasting into the wall (terrible finish). Props to Nesty.

So are we all going to ignore that comment about “foreign athletes training on American soil and under American coaches, and winning medals away from American athletes?” They said it as they were handing out the medals too. Hot damn, it was just a different time.

Remember watching this as a teenager, Biondi drifting to the line! 😂 Bronze for Jameson who is now a brilliant swimming commentator in the UK along with Moorhouse who won gold in the 100m breaststroke at the same Olympics.

APPALINGLY biased transmission. It took them over one full minute to finally show the olympic champion celebrating, while in the meantime focusing lavishly on the (who else?) American star, Biondi.

westnyacktwins If it still looked the same, it still looked a shame. I'm talking prínciples, not focusing on teacher's pets. The camera MUST focus first and foremost on the actual olympic champion, not on the expected olympic champion. (P.S. I was totally a Biondi's fan at the time, just for the record...)
@TarPatSlo
@TarPatSlo 3 года назад
Disagree - most of that minute was showing the slo-mo of the finish which was very much of interest, considering that Biondi was still leading with 10 metres left to swim. Seeing the slo-mo was what I wanted to watch as a neutral. Much more interesting than watching the winner bobbing around in the pool.

I'm not really sure, but I think that at the time, African-Americans must not have been too sad, with this historic victory, by Anthony Nesty over the favorite Matt Biondi, since he was the first black swimmer, in the history of the Olympics, who won a gold medal.

Phelps should have watched this race before London Olympics 200fly, he would have had 4 in both 200 IM and 200 Fly if he realized this is not how you finish fly. Always always always take that extra stroke, don't glide. He learned from his mistake in Beijing 100 fly when he beat Cavic by not gliding and taking the extra stroke.

Why would he need to watch this when he experienced it himself in Beijing?
