The classic battle between Elena Shushunova and Daniela Silivas from the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea. Svetlana Boginskaya won bronze, and Brandy Johnson was the top American in 10th.
Daniela Silivas was so ahead of her time then! We're STILL seeing ladies compete her eponymous "Silivas" FX skill- the incredible double twisting double salto tucked!
The most intense duel in the history of women's gymnastic. The floor routine from Daniela was a 10+. Besides the final scores, both represented a duel of artistry & grace versus technicality & precision. Both were winners!
The best at horrible abuse, influencing scores in their favor, making a mockery of the sport and its integrity in terms of equal treatment of athletes? Absolutely.
I am sad to know that the best Russian gymnast of the 1988 Olympics died at the age of 49 because of acute pneumonia. she was a star : Yelena Shushunova
Any time I see a gymnast start running I get all excited because I know that my jaw is about to drop. I'm not much for watching most "sports," but gymnastics never get old!
Bogi was so excellent here. I wish she was competing at 1984 or 1992 level instead, she'd have an easier go for gold. Here unless Silivas or Shushunova fell flat on their face (which was insanely unlikely), she'd always be third.
@@christineharrelson4831 I said 1984 or 1992 level, not literally in 1984. Had the level of competition not as high as 1988 she would’ve had a better shot at gold.
At 1984 level for sure, but even in her prime Bogi didn't have the difficulty to compete with both Miller and Gutsu. Gymnasts were throwing double layouts on Floor and full-in on Beam. And Gutsu's beam was a decade ahead of her time. So not a single chance for Boginskaya, except big falls from several competitors.
Her vaulting is garbage. Honestly that is the score she deserved from all the judges. If an American or Bulgarian did that same vault they get a 9.7 at best. If the Soviet judge didn't stupidly give a higher score to the 2nd vault which was even worse, there wouldn't be anything to talk about. Lastly even if Nellie gave the same generous 9.9 two other judges also gave, the score of 9.95 is still the same. Nothing changes.
It was the time of pleiad of excellent gymnasts: Shoushounova, Boginskaya, Silivas, Dobre, Szabo, Henrietta Onodi, Dörte Thümmler, Potorac, Dagmar Kersten; in male events: Artemov, Bilozerchev, Liukin (father of Nastia Liukin), Andreas Wecker, Yuko Iketani, Marius Gherman, Yuri Cecchi... Today we have no big name, except Simone Biles, Nile Wilson, Igor Radivilov and Sam Mikulak.
It was the time of grossly biased judging. 10’s being thrown for completely undeserving routines, others being ridiculously underscored to keep them out of a medal. Good riddance to that time.
@@kameliehagenand how many GOLD medals did she win? Right, ONE. Simone won THREE in one Olympics on her own! Simone doesn’t have to qualify first in every event, she makes sure it counts at the RIGHT time.
Silivas should have won or results were tied. It was neli kim from USSR gave a 9.8 to silivas in the vault. Look at what happened in the individual apparatus finals, silivas got 3 golds... lol
Nelli was petty for giving Silivas a 9.8, but her score wasn't counted there. Out of the six judges, the highest and lowest scores were eliminated and the middle four was rounded up, which gave Silivas her score. Still, she should've won.
@@grumpyduck5712 She didn't deserve to win. 9.95 is too high for her on vault. And she messed up beam, where she should have an advantage on Shushunova but blew it this day. Bela Karolyi who LOVES Silivas, and is her former coach, even said "she made 3 major wobbles on beam in front of the whole world and deserved a 9.8 max. Her 9.9 was a disgrace." Nuff said.
@saragrant9749 Yelena died young because she lacked an exit strategy. It was a familiar tale for many elite Soviet gymnasts... indeed, for many elite athletes full stop. Beyond coaching & commentating, there really werent that many options for a happy, fulfilling life after gymnastics. It was (& still is) the cost of complete dedication.
Elena had a very sad, unhappy existence after gymnastics. The Soviet system kept her alcoholic decline very hushed up. However, her early demise should speak for itself. There simply wasn't anything left for her after gymnastics. It's a common plight for elite athletes: life AFTER.
Yelena Shushunova ,Por siempre Grande!!!
Silivas should had won. RUSSIA back then had power over the scores but this was definitely Silivas Good medal. Just like Zsabo should had won over Mary Lou. They were both were over scored. Yeah Mary Lou, zsabo took one step and you took 20. The Romania’s were the true winners..🥇
Nelli Kim , I always admired your gymnastic and your commitment to gymnastic as a judge. I always loved 1988 olympic they made me fall in love with the sport. But honestly I never watch carefully... you gave a 9.8 to her first vault to make sure she would not have eaten then give a 9.9 to a less perfect one!!! shame on you. hope to this day you feel ashamed to crushed the dream ... I understand it was surely not easy probably pressed bu higher authority but honestly hope you can apology one day
Her vaulting is garbage. Honestly that is the score she deserved from all the judges. If an American or Bulgarian did that same vault they get a 9.7 at best. If the Soviet judge didn't stupidly give a higher score to the 2nd vault which was even worse, there wouldn't be anything to talk about.
@@masonlovesroblox If a Bulgarian or American did that vault they would get a 9.7 max. It was Silivas's very best, but she isn't a good vaulter. Her vault scores are only by her name, just like Shushunova's beam scores to some extent.
That was one of her teammates. Listen to the commentary Plus you can see Elenas performances after. Couple of the podium, with major mistakes. Never done by an olympic champion
Shushunova was beautiful and awesome but am I the only one who thinks Silivas should've have it? Nellie Kim being a judge and giving Silivas a 9.8 was a conflict of interest and we've seen how slithery nellie can be
Cannot understand how Biles cannot stick a vault landing and goes out of bounds on floor yet she scores higher than other gymnasts that stick their landings after performing very well on the apparatus. I respect Biles but I still am not much of a fan of the "powerhouse" gymnastics.
Como en cualquier cosa....el político pasa por encima de todo.......10 significa perfección.....aqui se han dado notas de 10 ...pero de perfección NADA. MI OPINIÓN
No offense to Elena Shushnova's memory, but I think Daniela Silivas was robbed. I thought so when I watched this event live back in 1988 and still think so today.
