Going back to the days of when this was a premiere matchup. Joe Montana and the Niners look to end a 2-game skid as they welcome Doug Williams and the defending champ Redskins to town, for a big Monday night battle between 6-5 teams.
The mid to late 80's were a great time for legendary rivalries and Dynasties. Particularly, the NFC Powerhouses were so dominant at the time: the Bears, 49ers, Redskins, Giants. Then you had your second tier upstarts like the Vikings, Eagles, Rams, and Saints. What a great time. Free Agency changed the face of the game forever.
The first of a 4-game win streak for the 49ers, allowing them to take the division from the Saints, sneak into a bye as the 2-seed, and later capture their 3rd SB of the decade; Bill Walsh's last, capping off one of the greatest NFL coaching careers ever seen.
This looked really rough for the 49ers. I remember after they blew the lead in Phoenix, having doubts that they would make the postseason. And then really having doubts after the Raider loss. It was a great turnaround, and also a nice redemption after being upset the previous year against Minnesota.
Yep, had he stuck around another 4-5 years he'd had at least 2more super bowl titles. The 9ers team that won the SB in both 89 and 94 were essentially his players he signed and drafted. No disrepect to coach Seifert.
Hard to believe, but Montana's career was on the line this game. Had they lost history might have been very different. No Montana legend, no Forty Niner dynasty. Joe rose to the occasion, like he usually did!

I don't think so, because you are a RB first: you have to put up very good rushing numbers first(11,000 career rushing yards). Then, your other things can help you, as you are only a borderline candidate then. I also think a player has a decision to make--if a team does not allow him to run the ball enough in its current system and he wants to be a HOFer. Play until your 1st/2nd contract is up and go to a rushing squad, because you want to prove that you can handle a rushing attack...This is important for a RB. He might get in as pioneer if a voter sees it that way, but I do not think he should get on on merit and I grew up watching the niners!
This was a stretch between 1981-1991 both the 49ers and the Redskins were the two winningest teams in Pro Football during an 11-year span. They combined for 8 Super Bowl appearances they won 7 of 8 Super Bowl and both reached NFC Championship in 10 out of 11 years.
That's the problem with coaching today. These owners now are looking for young X's and O's coordinators to be a head coach, but they lack the knowledge and experience in preparation and in-game adjustments. Gibbs and Walsh are legends.
Love old Monday Night Football theme on ABC . That used to get me fired up to watch . I like it on ESPN and the musical intervals they added, but it not like the old theme . It’s like a Miles Lane “Let’s get on” in boxing with this theme you knew 2 powerhouse teams were about to go head to head even if the game turned out to be lopsided or a stinker . I loved it as a kid .
This is the game with the Daryl Green tip catch by Rice. When Dierdorf said "There seems to be a little football left in Mr Montana", he wasn't joking. Montana suffered a lot of injuries in the seasons after SB 19, like that hit from LT, and he had to compete against Steve Young. In the middle of 88 it looked like Young would be the starter. Montana went on to win 2 more SB's.
Two championships teams heading in opposite directions. Washington looks exhausted and beat up after winning the Super Bowl, while the Niners finally coming together after the manufactured quarterback controversy.

Gibbs's offense made any QB look good (As did Walsh's offense) Joe Montana returned to form in this game as he'd had health issues all year. We were 6-5 coming into this game so the pressure was off.
