Right at the end you guys hear the comment, "If the 49 didn't screw us up we got it all." He is referring to the AN/SPS-49 air search radar. It was so powerful it often wreaked havoc on things like video cameras of that era out on deck. It would actually trip the circuit breaker of a analog multimeter down on deck when the antenna swept past.

The occasional lines on the camera is from a rotating search radar possibly the 49 radar. That happened to a video I shot on board a ship I was on.

In 1970 I was on the Independence CVA62. We were entering the Med through the Straits of Gibraltar and a Soviet Missle Cruiser was entering at the same time. They didn't ram us but they came close enough that we could have refueled them.

Only a boat load of children & non-professionals would pull a stupid stunt like that. & their co went along with that? He was probably drunk or passed out. They wouldn't have stood a chance against us back then (if fully engaged) & the same applies at present (especially since remodernization of our military post Vietnam War). Hopefully that ugly scenario doesn't occur
@michmvp
@michmvp 3 года назад
@@carnifexor3010 That missile cruiser stayed with us, just over the horizon, the whole time we were in the Med. There was also a 'trawler" in sight almost all the time. Several times they interfered with us when we were launching and recovering. Thought we were going to sink one that tried to cross our bow when we were doing 30 knots. He got turned to avoid the collision but he bounced of the side of the ship a couple times as we went by.

USSR recognized 12 miles, the rest of the world recognizes 7 miles. To keep the USSR honest, the US ran at 7 miles. So the US did nothing wrong. The USSR, trying to be the shit country it is, ran into US ships without provocation. And then lied to its people about it. Saying the USSR was trying to help stricken US ships and got rammed by US ships. Do some research before showing your ass
@0hn0haha
@0hn0haha 9 лет назад
SgtSeth The UK has always recognized 12 kilometers; as an example, look at Sealand. The US recognizes international law? Sure, I'll buy that; the USSR recognized 12 km (km, not miles! nobody recognizes it in miles), as set by international law; 12 km is about 7.5 miles.
@SgtSeth
@SgtSeth 9 лет назад
0hn0haha Its not 12 km, its 12 nautical miles (nmi). And its not the UK, its the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, that all UN members observe. I mispoke about the ranges. There is a 12 nmi territorial waters range, but this is normally waived for ships that are passing through from one point to another. This is called "innocent passage". This passage extends to civilian and military traffic alike. Had you read the accounts in the first video, you would have seen this: "In February 1988, Caron operating with Yorktown, entered Soviet 7 miles ) territorial waters limit in the Black Sea off the Crimean Peninsula. Under international law, this act could be permissible if the ship was progressing from one point in international waters to another point in international waters via the shortest course possible, but according to the Soviet Union, it was the right of the USSR to authorize or prohibit travel in selected areas within the 12 mile limit. The United States however did not recognize the Soviet's claim in this case. To prevent it from becoming accepted precedent, the US Navy claimed that it had sailed warships through such areas at regular intervals in the past, which we had, not just two years prior." -ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N4jQhnXrWbg.html

Many were the times we saw Soviet ships out gunned and out classed performing acts such as this one the world over. From ramming with Frigates to Bears flying low overhead with 2.5 Megawatt Tracking radars throwing sparks in the cockpit visible on the ground. What Mother Russia never had in Technology has never stopped them from Guarding their borders. I hope one day we can forget all of this foolishness and work together. We have more in Common then EITHER of us has with China or the Middle east. PS, the harpoons were tracking you from 70 miles out, the 5 inch had a round ready in the chamber and the CIWS would'a put a track so deep thru you we would have been able to see daylight thru.
