BATMAN: 1989. Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger, Tim Burton! Often overlooked after Batman Returns weirded everyone out and Batman and Robin made everyone sick, the original 1989 BATMAN movie was less a summer film and more of a massive culture shaking event. 1989 Batmania would have aftershocks well into the 1990s, paving the way for the mainstream image, followed up by the Animated Series, of the Dark Knight. Moody, dark, more like a classic horror movie than the pop art 60s TV show, BATMAN set the tone And provided the template for all the “serious” comic book and super hero movies that followed. And for those of us just becoming aware of the wider world, those 80s and 90s kids who grew up in the BATMAN era, the caped crusader was a daily companion through the TOYS !
From Toy Biz’s original wave of BATMAN movie figures and DC super heroes in summer of 89, to the Kenner Dark Knight Collection that changed the way toy lines were marketed for the next decade, the various plastic Batmobile, Batwing, Batcycles, and Batsuits were staples of the toy box and status symbols among playmates for an entire generation of kids. From water-squirting joker and rope-belt Batman to the multicolor bat variants that packed the shelves of every toy store in the nation and across the world, BATMAN was everywhere. And although he gets short shrift and only meager mention from bloggers, reviewers, and has heretofore been left out of the toys that made us, Batman was every inch the phenomenon that the contemporaneous ninja turtles were or that later kids would find with power rangers and the like. So...
On today's episode of Randomland... Come with me into my own bat cave as I’m finally fulfilling a long series of promises over the years to show you my humble 1989 Batman collection!
And by the way, if you have 1989-1992 Bat items you want to “dispose of” I’m all bat ears 😂 and side note, if you know anyone who worked on these toy lines at Kenner or Toy Biz let me know. I’ve been dying to ask questions for years, and looking for the archived box art for years too! Wouldn’t that be something... a whole room full of replica bat boxes ...

I was born in 81, so in 89 when this was released, I was just about to turn 8 and we went to go see it. I was so excited, it was on a Sunday and I had school the next day. So being out late on Sunday was something that never happened. I was still playing with the Kenner super powers toys. So untill I got the updated figures I played out the movie with my blue and grey batman, my joker and my blue batmobile. Then a couple of months later I got some of the toybiz figures for my birthday. On Halloween I went as Batman in my very awesome homemade costume. Then come that Christmas I got some ninja turtle stuff, the batmobile and the batwing. And lastly in the stocking was the Batman VHS! I bet I watched that movie 5 times that day. Thank you for sharing your story and sparking my memory.

Same here! July of 81 so for my 8th bday I saw Batman with my dad who was a pastor. I remember him telling me not to say that when joker called him a gruesome son of a bitch. 🤣

Batman 1989 is the greatest film ever made; I love every second of this movie. I've been obsessed with it since 1990. I love everything and Michael Keaton became a god to me, just like Robert Englund when he portrayed Freddy Krueger

We're almost the same age and for me was the same, my parents weren't rich and I never had all the Masters, Ghostbusters, Ninja Turtles or complete collections and I always had to choose one or two 😅 When I had to choose a Batman toy from the 1989 movie toys I chose Bruce Wayne that can turn into Batman! That was cool! Never had the Batmobile but in return my parents bought me an Ecto 1!✌🏻

You just brought back all these fun “I was a mom in the late ‘80s and ‘90s” memories, so thanks!!!! I was 8 or 9 when this came out and let me tell you, the marketing for this movie was next level. I had a significant amount of the trading cards, making-of magazines, Batdance was on the radio in constant rotation, the NES game was blowing up. I never saw any of the toys but fuck me I was hyped for the movie, I already knew almost everything about It. We only had a dilapidated old drive in theatre, and it re-opened and closed again within the perfect window to show Batman at its release (the last movie it showed was Return of the Jedi, for which the poster was up on the ‘Now Showing’ board for most of my childhood). My mum sent me with one of her younger co-workers (who also introduced me to Bill & Ted), we watched it on a massive screen with the sound coming through the car’s FM radio. What an experience.

I’m dumbfounded by the people who thumbed this down 😆 this is incredible! I was just 4 years old when Batman came out, but I remember the pandemonium lasted for years! I still remember the night my parents surprised me with the ToyBiz Batman play set. They didn't have a lot of money, but they knew that I loved Batman and was absolutely gutted that I was too young to see it in the theaters. I've been gifted a lot of cool stuff in my life, but I think that still takes the cake as the best present/surprise I've ever gotten. Thanks for this trip back to the 80s, Justin.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Back to the Future 3, Dead Poets Society, Do the Right Thing and of course the long awaited Batman!!!! Saw it opening day at the 11:30am showing Friday morning!!! Ended up seeing it in the theater about 3 times. Still one of the best Batman films.

89 was like the best year ever all the greatest movies came out then. I still remember seeing an exclusive preview for Batman 6 months before it came out in June on Entertainment Tonight. The Excitement was loaded and I just couldn't wait Batman was explosive and massive when it came out you could feel it peaking months before. Toys were sold out and you had to wait for an action figure when I finally got mine I got 2. I still have my Batmobile, my Michael Keaton Batman and Joker all from 89. Love the toy catalogs.

WOW I love this video so much......I was an 8 year old kid when this glorious piece of film/comic history came out, so the massive amount of everything Batman during this time period was just an amazing time to be alive!! Like you said, I knew Batman mostly from reruns of the the Adam West show, as well as the Super Friends cartoon and subsequent Super Powers figure. This took my kind of passive interest in Batman to an entire other stratosphere of fandom!! So cool to see stuff like the catalogs/magazines and whatnot that I always saw references to, but never actually owned. I still have all my old '89-'90 Batman toys, and I was fortunate to have they entire ToyBiz collection, as well as a large chunk of the Kenner Dark Knight Collection growing up. Sooooo many memories of not only playing with those figures with my friends, but the hunt to find all that stuff in stores!! I remember that looooong search for the actual Batman ToyBiz figure, that was pretty much non-existent in any store in the bay area. My best friend went on vacation and somehow found a store with them somehow in stock, and his parents bought one for both of us....THAT was up and above the call of our friendship!! hahaha..........anyways man, thanks for the trip down memory lane. I think I'm gonna dig out all my '89 Batman related stuff.......

Such a great upload and brought back so many memories from my own childhood. I was 8 years old and visiting my grandparents in NYC when the film hit theaters. I remember the Batman logo and Joker imagery being everywhere I went. I distinctively remember my parents ordering me a Batman figure and driving me up to Toys “R” Us to pick it up when it came in. Also remember driving up to Blockbuster with my dad and picking up a VHS copy of Batman which they had also pre-ordered. I visited my grandparents the summer of 1990 and instead of Batman, it was Warren Beatty‘s Dick Tracy that was everywhere!

My son was born in 1980. I remember buying the video for me. Not so sure he was even interested. You brought back lots of memories. I lived in CA at that time. Moved near Anaheim in '91. My favorite store was Best.

Very cool collection Justin. I wish I would have kept some of the stuff from my childhood. It probably would have been worth a lot these days. But, back then we didn't have the Internet and sports cards, coins, rocks and stamps were the only things you heard people collected. BTW, I grew up on Walnut St. and went to Betsy Ross elementary in the 70's.

Hey Justin! If you look at the adds for the 89' Batman costume that is me. Back then I worked for Morris Costumes and we had the license to distribute the costume. I remember we were waiting for Burton and Keaton to give us the thumbs up . As soon as we did they grabbed me to put on the costume for the pictures. Good times. Nice collection my friend.

The 3rd smaller WB catalogue was actually a day one movie theatre hand out. I still have mine. They gave everyone on opening day that catalogue and a batman logo movie cup. Bravo on video . Amazing

Very cool, I'm a huge Batman fan too, and I had most of the same stuff you got, I'm working on my collection now, and I love your stories behind your collection, your stories really show how appreciative kids were back in the days.
