Really did squeeze him down on the rail, But Pat Day, made the mistake of turning Easy's head towards SS, as if he couldn't see him already.I know the score was SS 3-1, But this is the only race where it was an even playing field The Derby was a muddy mess! SS had a better trip in the Preakness, P Day moved to early on Easy, into a 46 2/5 fraction, and he still would have won if he was on the outside. Nevertheless, a nose decided it. Belmont, level field fast track, they both had perfect trips, Easy Goer romped! The BC, Easy was 1/2 ! There was rain on and off that day, including a shower right before the Classic, Easy could run on the straight, SS slipped away on the turns. I also believe that Chris McCarron rode SS more patiently than P Val. Easy had 7 lengths to make up in the stretch, ( a short one) came a neck short...

Then Sunday Silence was the start of Japan’s racing dynasty. Even though Easy Goer passed at age 8 years, Sunday Silence at 16, Sunday Silence was the sire of more winners than Easy Goer comparing just the 4 years as sires until Easy Goer died. Sunday Silence is one of the greatest sires ever. Also HOY for 1989. Nothing against Easy Goer, Sunday Silence was the better horse in racing and as a sire.

Numerous greats were behind or tied on the head to head, including Citation, Kelso, Easy Goer, Forego, Dr Fager, Damascus, Swaps, Nashua, John Henry, Skip Away, Sir Barton, Pleasant Colony, Shuvee and many others; and who's better in any way is totally subjective period. Winning Without Drugs was also Way Beyond SS's reach; Winning on larger tracks with circumferences larger than a mile was also way Beyond SS's reach. There was the drug-free Test of the Champion Belmont Stakes where Easy Goer destroyed him in the only state in the entire country during that era that banned all drugs. There are numerous factors, including but not limited to : superior career, superior & better body of work, GI wins, Graded Stakes wins, wins against older horses & open company, running times, avg running times at various distances & at all distances, head to heads, records set, still standing records, weights carried & weights conceded, stakes wins & stakes wins vs. open company/older horses, varying distances won at during career, superior campaign or campaigns, durability, constitution, superiority & dominance, injuries, jockeys, riding & rider errors, trainers, training and trainer errors, win/loss %'s, trips, amount of races run, track sizes, track circumferences, post positions, campaign & career earnings with & without bonuses, races with drugs & medications allowed/used, races with no drugs & medications allowed/used, etc etc & many many more. They were both great horses, but who's better is still totally subjective even after factoring in the endless amount of other factors. Easy Goer & SS were both greats. Easy Goer won 12 total stakes, 9 Grade 1 wins at distances of 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f, and 12f showing versatility on all tracks & many distances. SS won 7 total stakes, 6 Grade 1 wins but only at distances from 9f to 10f. Both versatile indeed, but that is a big difference in versatility. Easy Goer also defeated older horses Six times at ages three and four while conceding a good amount of weight in quite a few of them. SS defeated older horses only two times at ages three and four. Many other factors would favor Easy Goer over SS as well, including a) amount of career races able to run - 20 to 14 ; b) amount of total career wins - 14 to 9 ; c) running times at all distances ; d) average running times at all distances ; e) career earnings without bonuses - about $ 4.8 million to about $ 3.8 million ; f) career winning percentage - 70% to 64% ; g) Grade 1 wins - 9 to 6 ; h) total stakes wins - 12 to 7 ; i) wins vs older horses/open/unrestricted at ages three & four - 6 to 2 ; j) Grade 1 stakes wins at various distances - EG at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f & 12f; SS at only 9f to 10f ; k) Easy Goer never was defeated by more than 2 & a half lengths in any race in a much longer career, SS never was defeated by more than 8 lengths in any race in a much shorter career; & other factors that would favor Easy Goer would be varying distances won at, records set, near records set, still standing records, running times, avg running times at all distances, speed figures, campaigns, durability, constitution, dominance & superiority in races - average win margin and average loss margin, weights carried, weight concessions, etc. Other than SS's slight edge in head to head races, IMO Easy Goer was better than SS in most - if not all - these other factors & categories. But even after all of these numerous factors are factored in, who was better is still subjective. They were both greats, but IMO Easy Goer was a better horse, had a superior body of work, and had a superior career than SS even though SS held the slight edge in head to head races by the nose of his Preakness win. There is a lot more other than head to heads.

DELMARCLUB1 No doubt Easy Goer was regally bred and a superstar in his own right but Sunday Silence was a beautiful colt that had major heart. As you know it was a battle of the Hancock’s and there was a very interesting subplot to all of this. I don’t discredit Easy Goer being a legend in his own right but you cannot knock a horse that was using Bute/ Lasix when it was allowed by the state. Charlie Whittingham abided by the rules and if Easy Goer’s connections chose not to take advantage of this then that is on them.

And this is very important, fundamental and essential. I certainly knock and downgrade ALL horses, trainers, states, countries, jurisdictions, etc., that need, use and allow raceday drugs. Plus the fact that Easy Goer ran far more races than SS in general while drug-free and with much less rest and time between races; EG ran far more totally DRUG-FREE races than SS (with DRUGS & far more rest & time between races) at more fluctuating, different distances with far less time and rest between drug-free races. SS ran far less races with drugs and with much more rest and time in between races, in his much shorter career. During that era, New York was the ONLY STATE in the WHOLE COUNTRY that banned all drugs. And it was to New York's credit (being the ONLY state in the whole country that banned all drugs) that the Belmont Stakes and numerous other big championship G1 races stood as huge obstacles to drug-dependent horses like Sunday Silence. Back then, New York was alone in the entire US and was the only state that had the courage to ban all drugs. New York's no-drug rules during those times kept the outcomes crystal clear. New York's refusal to allow drugs during those times was a major factor in keeping New York's major races the true tests of champions. New York didn't allow horses to race on ANY drugs during those times, while the rest of the country did. Winning any big race on drugs was/is not what racing is about. Only the drug-free races could/can be called championship events. Why? Because Lasix was and is the main drug which masks other drugs and flushes other prohibited drugs from a horse's system in order to elude post-race detection. You couldn't get around that in NY. You couldn't get around the fact that the main masking and flushing drug - Lasix- was banned in NY. New York also banned ALL other drugs, and these included much more than just the flushing and masking Lasix . These included banning various anti-inflammatory drugs , diuretics, painkillers, stimulants, adjunct drugs, bronchodilators (helps to breathe better, get more air) , etc., like Procaine, Banamine, Ketoprofun, Bute, cocaine, caffeine, snake venom, Flunixin, acetylsalicylic acid, meclofanemic acid, Naproxen, Clenbuterol, aminocaproic acid [ACA], tranexamic acid [antifibrinolytics], carbazochrome ["Kentucky Red"], etc. And these included banning MANY more exotic treatments. NONE were permitted in New York. If a trainer had a horse who was a bleeder, they would run their horses while helping the bleeding problems through natural means; by gradually taking food and water away from the horse in the 24 hours before the race. If they needed all the other pain-killer, anti inflammatory, airway breathing help, etc., and stimulant drugs, they were also out of luck. A large amount of connections would NOT run (or run very very rarely) in drug-less NY, and the ones that did had MOST of their horses exposed when they ran in drug-free NY. Most of these trainers decisions not to run (or very rarely) was influenced mostly by New York's no-drug rules more than anything else. The connections of many many top horses, including Summer Squall, Best Pal, Dance Smartly, Hollywood Wildcat, Tight Spot, Paseana, Blushing John, Lost Code, Desert Wine, Snow Chief, Wild Again, Tank's Prospect, Skywalker, King Glorious, Spend a Buck, Great Communicator, Infinidad (Whittingham), Estrapade (Whittingham), Flawlessly (Whittingham), Capote, Sunny's Halo, Gate Dancer, The Wicked North, Suave Prospect, Tejano Run, Lil E. Tee, et al, freely admitted that their horses could not compete in top company without the drugs, and never (or very rarely) ran them in the big championship races in drug-free New York. In doing that, they came clean with the fans, bettors, breeders, etc. These horses trainers and connections would pass up these drug free races, and if they ran in them they were often exposed for what they were by not running well and-or getting beaten decisively; if that was not already apparent from them having skipped (and/or not run well and/or getting beaten decisively) most of these drug-free championship races.

It was a huge East/ West rivalry with Easy Goer being billed the regally bred, expected superstar and Sunday Silence being a sickly colt that was nursed to health through Guiness in his feed, a sort of underdog of sorts. I agree, and you make many valid points as to drug free racing being a thing many horses especially bleeders not being able to do this. I can see you clearly know your stuff and have been around the game a long time. I’m not sure with the spanking Easy Goer gave him in the Belmont being due to racing drug free or Sunday Silence just not liking the huge sweeping turns of Belmont or just not being a horse that had the 1 1/2 miles in him, as he nearly lost second. Either way, the reason the rivalry still resonates in many thoroughbred racing fans hearts is they both were special champions that were head and shoulders over the rest of that crop.

There are numerous factors, including but not limited to : superior career, superior & better body of work, GI wins, Graded Stakes wins, wins against older horses & open company, running times, avg running times at various distances & at all distances, head to heads, records set, still standing records, weights carried & weights conceded, stakes wins & stakes wins vs. open company/older horses, varying distances won at during career, superior campaign or campaigns, durability, constitution, superiority & dominance, injuries, jockeys, riding & rider errors, trainers, training and trainer errors, win/loss %'s, trips, amount of races run, track sizes, track circumferences, post positions, campaign & career earnings with & without bonuses, races with drugs & medications allowed/used, races with no drugs & medications allowed/used, etc etc & many many more. They were both great horses, but who's better is still totally subjective even after factoring in the endless amount of other factors. Easy Goer & SS were both greats. Easy Goer won 12 total stakes, 9 Grade 1 wins at distances of 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f, and 12f showing versatility on all tracks & many distances. SS won 7 total stakes, 6 Grade 1 wins but only at distances from 9f to 10f. Both versatile indeed, but that is a big difference in versatility. Many other factors would favor Easy Goer over SS as well, including a) amount of career races able to run - 20 to 14 ; b) amount of total career wins - 14 to 9 ; c) running times at all distances ; d) average running times at all distances ; e) career earnings without bonuses - about $ 4.8 million to about $ 3.8 million ; f) career winning percentage - 70% to 64% ; g) Grade 1 wins - 9 to 6 ; h) total stakes wins - 12 to 7 ; i) wins vs older horses/open/unrestricted at ages three & four - 6 to 2 ; j) Grade 1 stakes wins at various distances - EG at 7f, 8f, 9f, 10f & 12f; SS at only 9f to 10f ; k) Easy Goer never was defeated by more than 2 & a half lengths in any race in a much longer career, SS never was defeated by more than 8 lengths in any race in a much shorter career; & other factors that would favor Easy Goer would be varying distances won at, records set, near records set, still standing records, running times, avg running times at all distances, speed figures, campaigns, durability, constitution, dominance & superiority in races - average win margin and average loss margin, weights carried, weight concessions, etc. Other than SS's slight edge in head to head races, IMO Easy Goer was better than SS in most - if not all - these other factors & categories. But even after all of these numerous factors are factored in, who was better is still subjective. They were both greats, but IMO Easy Goer was a better horse, had a superior body of work, and had a superior career than SS even though SS held the slight edge in head to head races by the nose of his Preakness win. There is a lot more other than head to heads.

And SS romped over Le Voyageur in the Louisiana Super Derby.
