Fun video back then, hilarious video now - as the 1989 Permian Panthers memorialize their state championship, as well as earn redemption from their Friday Night Lights 1988 loss to Dallas Carter, with this 80's boy-band hit.
Looking at some of those mean mugs.. That team had some tough looking kids who whooped up on much bigger teams with lots more talent. Even the goofy song does not take away from that. Legendary..
Actually, #75 (Chad Williams) was the biggest guy on the team that year, and he was "maybe" 235 lbs, tops. Permian was NOT known for their size. Some of those guys were 150 lbs.
The biggest high school generations were 90s to early to maybe mid 2000s 5a high schools in Texas. They were freakish big and looked like 30 year old guys, I noticed a decline in size (I'm not talking about height but size and development) in the late 2000s. And an extreme decline as the 2010s started and went on. The weirdest thing about gen z is that they aren't lighter in weight per se than other generations. But yet alot smaller and less developed as a whole. It's weird.
I read Friday night lights my freshman year of high school in the fall of '97. Never imagined that there would be movies and a TV series made about it. I've been fascinated with Permian ever since.
I love it. My team made one of these Videos to our 93-94 season. I thought it was the the worst video I had ever scene but this one may still the trophy. Brings back so many memories.
I played on a state champion FB team in high school; they don't look that athletic in street clothes but on film, they play fast. Today HS best like Bishop Gorman, Mater Dei, St. Thomas Aquinas, now those kids look athletic.
Lived in Oddesa 84-87 went to elementary school there, dirt roads, oil derricks and tornadoes! Ive never seen so many horned toads and snakes in my life! but football was life there. moved back to Ca. now california is 💩 🕳!
thanks for the posting of the video. made me relive those days along with some of the games posted from our highschool days. kjk, class of 1990. hard to beat!!!!
I could watch the '85 Chicago Bears sing their Super Bowl Shuffle ALL DAY with a huge smile on my face. People will ask, "How can you do that?". And I'll simply say, "Cause I've seen the '89 Permian Panthers lip sync along with New Kids on the Block!!"
I graduated in 1993 from Permian and all yall that talk shit about permian...understand videos like this gives older guys like me to look at ourselves when we were growing up. I know thats hard for sum of yall that grew up in the "internet days" to understand. I can honestly believe that this world would be better off if it was not invented.
All you youngsters laughing about the musical genius and choreography of the 80s. Lmao!!! Yeah, I'm surprised this video didn't burst into flames, but they were some tough ass young men. We're rough!!! 🎶 🎵 🪕 😆
Indeed we were tough. And frankly just mentally drained. It was the only option presented to us that day, so we rolled with it! Hilarious indeed but who cared by then. We'd already won it all!
@@mistermojo66 I was 15 that year, sporting sebagos, pegged jeans 👖 😳 so I know what a great time it was to be alive. Wow, talking to a actual panther. Awesome. Must feel really awesome to have your story etched in stone. I just watched the real Midland Lee game and Hollywood couldn't add nothing you boys did. What a game.
I lived in Houston in the early 70s. The first Permian player to play in the NFL Royce Berry, lived across the street. Played for the Bengals 69-74. Lived in Houston in off season.
How have I never seen this? This is gold. Sadly, Permian can’t hang with the BIG BOYS over in the DFW! Heck they can’t get out the first round of the playoffs! 😂
You know I was thinking something similar all the national ranked teams play each other…. However westlake never does it’s as if they don’t wanna play the monsters from southern cal like mater dei who’s ranked #1
Sadly, you are right in these days… losing to El Paso whoever is inexcusable. We prided ourselves in the 80s in beating the DFW schools more often than not. Ain’t happening anytime soon anymore, unfortunately.
@@Ljcast956 they recruit from other cities in Texas and I know this for a fact. They buy the families home in the west lake bee caves hills promising the families a beyond nice home and guaranteed starting and play time. When I was in school we got stomped by them everytime, they’d have 6’4 freshman quarterbacks that’d literally chop block you everytime. Ain’t no way teams go undefeated close to 4 years without the best players available. Again I know they recruit as I know a couple families that have been moved from a couple of the towns outside of atx to west lake to play. That’s not even fair.
To any Permian players who played for Coach Gaines, was his wife as hot in real life as she was in the movie? I couldn't take my eyes off of Connie Britton while watching the movie, LOL!
If this is the prize for winning state, I would have fumbled on the 5 going in. Sorry Panthers this is painful. Congrats on the title. Loved the movie and the show.
@@mistermojo66 My Junior year in HS we outscored our opponents 317-6. The 6 was a deflected Hail Mary before halftime. I submit that this was not Texas 5A ball. Our graduating class was under 100 kids. It was fun though!
Too bad they can't get a photo shot of them today! I'm sure they had a good time making this video. Their kids are probably cracking up at this video but it was their time...and they're State Champs! Nothing can take that away from them!!!
I'm one of those kids laughing but they were tough. Mostly undersized but made up for it with heart. This is the first time I saw the video. I love it.
Up there on the cringe meter but I know it was cool at that time. Also, being state & nat’l champs you can post whatever you want 😎 Hope Permian makes another deep run in the 2020’s soon!!
@@chosenwon5618 I wouldn’t consider HIGH SCHOOL the high light of any real man’s life ( four years vs the next forty after high school ) and If that’s so, Id take the ladder
@@Mr.paint123 my peak in life was far from high school, since your commenting on something so stupid, it fits what you are in life or what you wanted to be but never could be! Have a nice life anyway!
underrated comment. Most of the kids these days produced so much "cringe media" so when they get older and to the positions of power - it will be one "Benny Hill Show" after the other :)
Love the story and this era of football. I played in a state championship in my state in 86 but that had to be one of the gayest things I've ever witnessed😂!!
I got so many questions. Did y'all have a parade afterwards? Do you have any footage of it? I'd love to see it. Also, how didn't Chris Comer go D1. He looked absolutely special in his highlights. I only saw he went to a JuCo. One last question. When did you know Stoney Case was gonna be something nice? In the preseason? 1st game? Mid-season? Thanks for your time
No parade, but we did have an assemble in the school auditorium, and ESPN Scholastic Sports America showed up to award us the mythical national championship. A clip of it is in the first part of this video. I never understood why Comer was not more sought after. Recruiting was different back then...if you didn't have the size and other metrics, D1 never looked at us...historically Permian had always been small and scrappy, and so once Boobie Miles got hurt, I guess the recruiters just gave up on any RBs we had. I knew Stoney was going to be good in junior high. He had the height and arm, but he also had calm nerves and could handle the pressure of Mojo QB1, much better than his predecessor in FNL.
OMG!!! I'm a 1990 Lee graduate and played quarterback and safety for the Lee teams in 1988(Friday Night Lights year) and 1989. My God does this video bring back memories or what?!!! I live in Dallas now but if I ever run into Kevin Mannix(db) or Greg Kwiatkowski(lb) who were mojo players in the video and friends of mine I'm going to give them such a hard time! New Kids on the Block?! We were pathetic!!! Vince Henderson, 1990 Midland Lee Graduate and Rebel forever!
vingable how awesome that you guys have those experiences and memories to look back on!! For those of us that played sports in high school we are definitely jealous of you guys for getting to be a part of such a special time - congrats to you and all the guys you played with and against!!! AWESOME!!!!👍👍👍
Vinny....tell 'em how the Dawgs rolled to a 35-21 win vs. the Rebs in '88! That coin flip was a mother, though!!! Sent you a message....been a long time! Rusty
@TheBigcat123987 -- Wrong year... this is about the team that came right after the '88 team (the one featured in the movie/book). There are TONS of vids on here with highlights of the '89 team.
No, they were state champions cause anything beyond that is mythical. I'm not shit talking them because from the highlights they look like a badass team crushing the other teams. Maybe they were the best HS team in the country that year but we will never know. I just always hated when these national media sites would crown a team national champs without a playoff or tourney to prove it.
Ahh the good ole days of real high school football where you had the powerhouse public schools with the likes of Odessa Permian, Cleveland St. Ignatious, Massillon, Canton McKinley, Berwick high of Pennsylvania and to name a few more. Not this BS Mater Dei or IMG Academy who recruit players. Just a strong city small community who bred these kids and have played together since grade school..
back then, it was before President Bush signed the law that you could go to other high schools out of your district. Back in the 80's you had to go to high school where you lived. There was no recruting. Your family had to move into the district if you wanted to go to certain school.
Great question! Permian issues us numbers based on our offensive position (as you know it doesn't matter what your number is on defense) . I was playing guard on offense my junior year... Then at start of senior year they moved me to tight end. So I actually wore #85 for the first 4 games. But later on the.coaches decided to move me back to guard, but an 85 can't play guard. 66 had already been re issued, and only 52 and 79 were available. I picked 79 because that was my number on JV. Made it hard on my family who had all the MOJO gear customized for them by number!
Man aint one single sports team Ive ever been on would have agreed to make this video, especially to this particular song. I really would like to know how this came to be.
Keep in mind this was 32 years ago… so this wasn’t that bad back then. We didn’t have a choice… it’s what the TV station brought out and that’s what we shot. There you go!
@@mistermojo66 I remember when it was. I graduated in the mid 90s myself. You saying they made y'all use that particular song? Thats strange. I still don't think my school would have done it tbh. Live and let live tho its all good.✌
@@bluecollar825 it’s all good. We didn’t put up much of a fight. Of course there was no internet back then… so who knew this would be a worldwide viewed video now?? 😂
That’s just a ridiculous thing to say. The Chicago bears did a similar video, and they were grown men. If you want to speak for everyone on every team you ever played on that’s fine, but I bet any high school in the country would have jumped at the chance to make a dam music video no matter what song was used. These were kids.
@@tommypine9239 Well stated.... and I concur. No doubt this 1989 MoJo Team (and especially their 1988 predecessors) set the bar VERY HIGH for Texas HS Football as we know and love it today. All that being said... this video makes them look less like Texas Football Powerhouse Champions... ...and more like a bunch of New-Wave uber-douches who are trying waaaay too hard to get laid.
It said they won a national championship but in the movie that was based on the true story Friday night lights they lost the championship game. That story Friday night lights is a great story about the team in Texas. One of the great movies of all time Friday night lights based on a true story.
@@JKMcClaren1979 yeah the movie though the 1988 team they they were like one play away from winning the championship and they they were spotted at a bad spot and it was short and that was it
@@eddievenuto1862 They also were a small town team going against a behemoth high school out of Dallas. Dallas Carter High School. They were supposed to get ran out of the stadium even though Permian was a Powerhouse.
