@G90 If you don’t think that is innovative for its time I don’t know what to tell you. The technology packed into that vehicle is insane for the 80’s. Airbags existed… and? Once again they were not required so they were not implemented. I get your point but you were very rude about it. There are a lot of things out there today being tested, and that have been tested for decades that have yet to be implemented.
@G90 Nah dude I am not sensitive, you just came out of the gate being sarcastic for no reason. That kinda prompts me to want to be sarcastic as well. I’m not a weapon, just tired of people being asses for no reason.

The car was a piece of crap when it rolled off the assembly line and youre an idiot for thinking it wasnt. It was these kinds of cars that killed Pontiac.

Wow!!!! This brings back memories. My dad had a 1988 in red. It had the all digital dash version. We still have photos of that car! To make it even more 80s we had even a car phone 😂
I remember seeing this back in the late 80s in the full page color ads in Car & Driver, & Road & Track, etc.. I thought that was the coolest interior ever, and you know, all these 30 some years later, seeing it again . ..still cool. Pontiac built the hell out of some excitement.
My respects! In the nineties, my neighbor in a communal apartment had such a car. He, the neighbor was a gangster. The car is unreal then and now 👍 With warm, spring greetings from Leningrad, Russia 🇷🇺

I had an early '89 SE coupe like this, built before the switch to the 3.1 and analog speedometer. Every bell and whistle here plus leather seats and a sunroof. A real sharp car. The mpg with that 2.8L was great too. Always loved peoples' reactions to the interior when they'd ride in it.

The control pods and wheel buttons were inspired by the work of Italdesign's lead, Georgeto Guigario. They first appeared on his concept cars for Isuzu like the Ace of Spades. Other manufacturers began to adopt the style which he based on fighter jet cockpit controls. GMs close relationship with Isuzu could have helped facilitate this as well. I took this wheel and fitted it on my Fiero 2M4 in highschool. It looked great but it did not interface with the stereo as I did not swap the Delco stereo units.

It's really amazing how much the steering has evolved not only the aesthetics but also the precision of it. I'm looking at how much that steering is being turned just to take a very slight bend in the road. Lol
My aunt had the same exact car it was burgundy and she bought a brand new off the showroom floor! And she kept that car until it was unable to run LOL although it still looks brand new when she was done which was back in 2015
Very Beautiful, I love Pontiac vehicles. have you heard the engine starts? that was the real innovation time, and when the car cruises, it sounds like SpaceX flying to space. I wish I could have that car.
I think we all know Knight Rider influenced a lot of car interior designs back in the 80's. I wouldn't mind if they brought some of those design elements back I think they look cool. Interiors today are so sterile and boring. I think the infotainment systems have gotten completely out of control and need to be scaled back because they're taking over the car.
Out of all the divisions GM lost during the bankruptcy? It had to be Pontiac and Saturn? Possibly the coolest and the most innovative, respectively? Sad. ☮
