Loma Prieta occured on October 17th, 1989 at 5:04 P.M. It was a magnitude 6.9 earthquake with an epicenter at the San Andreas fault near Mt. Loma Prieta in the Santa Cruz Mts. It had a focal depth of 11 miles whereas a typical California quake has a focal depth of 4-6 miles. The quake was felt as far away as San Diego and western Nevada. It resulted in 63 deaths, more than 3700 injured and around 12,000 displaced. Damage estimates climbed as high as 10 billion dollars, with direct damage alone accounting for 6.8 billion. Following Loma Prieta, the Pacific plate had moved 6.2 feet to the northwest and 4.3 feet upward over the North American plate. Geologists had forecast a major quake for the area based mainly upon a lack of seismic event along the faultline since 1906. Information sourced from the California Deparment of Conservation.
