I was leaving the parking garage at work that day in downtown San Jose when it hit. At first I thought my car was getting ready to die because it was shaking so badly, then realized what it was when I saw people stumbling around. And then the electricity went out. We were all in line for a while until they finally raised the bar and let us out. The aftershocks continued all evening long. Quite a memorable day.

I remember watching from Poughkeepsie, NY, after relocating from Berkeley. A lifelong Giants fan, I was looking forward to a home winner to get back in the series. When the green screen came on and was followed by pull-away shots of fires, smoldering freeways, and all the players on the field, stunned, it was clear something bad had happened. I couldn't reach my friends in the area for a few days. This upcoming 25th anniversary of it brings it all back so clearly...

I was going up the lower escalator to the game watching the upper escalator wave back and forth. Just as I got to the top a big cloud of dust came out of the stadium. A short while later via my Sony Watchman I turned on KRON and they had a helicopter up and were showing the collapsed section of the Bay Bridge. At that point we knew it was time to go home to San Jose by the time we reach the bridge by the Flintstone house we were concerned that maybe that had collapsed too since it was already dark, so we drove across it very slowly around 5 miles an hour on the shoulder.

I was in a treatment center in Nashville, TN. "Harbors of Brentwood". I had been asleep for about 5 days (after being sedated). When I woke up, they took me to a room with a TV. It was playing the World Series. No more than 5 minutes passed before it went off the air. Then, they put me back to sleep as to not disturb me (us). I woke up much later, Very SAD and CONFUSED. Was living in Greenville, SC at the time. Was just leaving work (late) - driving to meet my wife and kids at a local restaurant for dinner. Turned on the radio to see if game 3 was starting. Heard the news about the quake. When we got home, the first news clip we saw showed the Bay Bridge. Couldn't believe it. For my last tour in the Marines, we lived on Treasure Island from '78 - '82 (had become an A's fan). I thought that bridge was bullet proof.

Growing up this had been th World Series matchup I had waited for since I can remember. As a kid we had weekend season tickets to the Giants game...200 level under the cardenza. We had to move to Seattle in 1980 and I missed seeing my Giants play(interleague was not a thing back then) but I did get to see my Raiders once a year before Seattle switched to the NFC. I was in Albuquerque during this game, down 2-0 but NOT worried because we had 3 ganes at home...after the Earthquake and when they finally resumed play, I honestly don't think anybody's hearts were in the game anymore over rebuilding the communities so the A's swept but nobody really cared. I was not heartbroken for losing the series but I was for all the devastation the quake brought. I miss Candlestick but life keeps moving forward.

I saw this telecast on WLS-TV Channel 7 in Chicago, Illinois. Since the game took place in California, I figured that a very minor, teensy, tiny earthquake with a 3.0 on the Richter Scale took place. My thought was, how could a relatively minor earthquake cause an interruption to this telecast? Here in the Northern Illinois area, earthquakes happen relatively once every century or so. I lived here in Northern Illinois for nearly 3 decades and I have never experienced any earthquakes. Of course, snowstorms, thunderstorms, tornadoes and such happen on a regular basis here.

@@sharonmorine5407 Suppose Chicago and Toronto had been in the World Series that year? It would have been newsworthy (Cubs in it; Blue Jays as first foreign team in it); but California would have been business as usual. The traffic would have been the usual, with thousands of cars. Can you imagine how many cars would have been on the I-880 bridge, if that had been a normal day? As it was, San Francisco and Oakland were in the World Series. The entire state of California celebrated. Schools and businesses closed early that day, to give people time to get home and watch the game. As a result, traffic was far lighter than normal, and that's why the death toll was so low. By the grace of God, San Francisco and Oakland were in the World Series, and that fact alone saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Remember that at the time, information couldn't get out nearly as quickly as it does today. At that moment, basically all the information ABC had was what Al and Timmy could see from the press box and report over the backup POTS line. They were using that break to figure out what exactly (if anything) they could do from the stadium. I've worked in broadcasting (at a local level) and you can figure out a lot in terms of emergency backup plans when you've got two or three minutes.
