Yes! I would love a "fringe ideas" video! It would be useful to compare the "a bit crazy" ideas featured in the main channel with the "true crazy stuff" 😄

When I was 8yo I used to row round the harbour to collect glass soda bottles. They had to have the metal screw cap, as that was the indicator that the deposit refund was still due. At the time I needed to collect only 4 bottles to match my weekly pocket money.

I suspect the biggest obstacle to eliminating plastic bags is the petrochemical industry that makes the plastic that goes into the bags.

How "fringy" can you get, Matt? Love that you follow the Doctor! He like few others could be taken for a less than serious technician, but that isn't what he is doing; he takes these ideas apart far enough to inform and enlighten, then moves on to the next one- and as the fringe comment reveal, there is always a next one! Sean, if you haven't found him, try reading some John Ringo's novels- I think you would like his "Hell's Gate" series.

I want a small turbine connected to a space heater. No fancy controls, just on or off. When someone puts that on the shelf at Lowe’s or Menards for $500, I’ll have one heater in my garage and one in my basement.

The strength issue is easily overcome with cables . If you anchor a tower with four cables it is extremely stable. Obviously, because of the blades on a traditional windmill, you can't have four anchor cables. The track can use seealed bearings or sealed ball bearings. My question about this configuration is if the blades rotate relative to the track. In other words, do they catch the wind when moving with the wind and cut the wind when moving against the wind. I am assuming they orient the straight portion of the track parallel to the common direction of wind flow in that area.
@nealjoseph5918
@nealjoseph5918 13 дней назад
They could also place two separate tracks for stability. Perhaps two tracks 10 feet apart with 30 foot blades.

Think a central pole with several guy wires to outer hub. The outer tracks support magnus effect rollers. The central hub runs wires out to the rollers. You only power the rollers within an ideal wind velocity spectrum. It may have more moving parts but your blades become lightweight cylinders that operate in winds of any direction.

A deposit on PET bottles actually makes sense because PET can be easily recycled if it isn't contaminated with other polymers. Around here there are more and more trash cans with what amounts to bottle holders on top so people don't have to go through the trash anymore and risk injury. Which is qt the same time thoughtful and late-stage capitalist af.

That 5 cents needs to be increased to half the retail price, refundable upon return of the can or bottle. People will complain at first, but they will soon come around to it. In Britain and Australia we had glass bottle deposits of about that level, at least initially, and it worked very well, until 'cheap' plastic bottles were invented.

Looking at the comodities markets, look at the artificial prices of diamonds. The price is maintained by artificial 'scarsity'. That is how the market is controlled.

I did buy solar panels and am putting them up on my fence as a replacement for the fence. Not optimum mounts, but mounting costs as much as panels and about the same on the electronics. So the panels are the cheapest thing to get. If you want to know what the panels cost them to manufacture, if they are public look at their production and the profit they make, and their expenses, divide that by the amount the manufacture, you get THEIR cost amount.

Great show. I like the idea of talking about crazy ideas and discussing the physics and economies why they are crazy. At the same time sometimes crazy ideas can work given enough engineering and fine tuning is put into it ie fuel cell hydrogen cars where at present the business case is not there.

The asteroid mining blows my mind. When we think about costs right now what we’re really talking about is energy+raw materials+labor. What can we do once we have access to an asteroid that can provide the resources needed to build a means of energy production capable of sustaining the process of resource extraction, all using automated systems? Robots to extract the materials to build solar or nuclear or Hydrogen refiners then use that energy to extract more materials to build more robots to exploit more asteroids and on and on, all with zero energy or resources coming from our planet. 😳

For the airloom system it’s possible that there are multiple factors to why it failed previously, more advanced components, cheaper manufacturing, or greater energy costs all may have made the system more cost effective.

I enjoyed the show. I couldn't help thinking about the plastic rings used for aluminum soft drink cans. In the last year so I saw an introduction of soft drinks with some form of cardboard or paper instead of plastic. My first impression was great however then I realized it's the 2020's ... how lame is that ? 🙂 Also .. How long has it been since you have revisited Minesto ? Thanks for the show !

Moving parts wear out. Moving parts that change directions wear out way faster. That’s one reason gas engines with rods, pistons and cams will never outlast electric motors.

Snow Ski Tow ropes and Lift tracks last for years with proper Maintenance, and large tower turbines have very high maintenance cost due to their height. Oh and the cost of a 60m wind blade from the maker is around $150k each, with another $15k to get it to the tower, and another $10k to lift it into place.

If you think any VAWT can compete with modern horizontal axis wind turbines, you don't have a grasp of basic physics. the turbulent wind near the surface will never be as efficient as the clean wind the higher up you go. VAWT also have a giant drag that can be eliminated. Your arguments are not science based.

I think that it would be nice to see... thing we are not close to being sure about... and an updates of stories when a major update or milestone happens with them. maybe on this channel... maybe on a separate TBDupdates channel. But yes I would love updates.. I would love why we are not covering this tech.. i like callouts...like the Robert Murray Smith one.. i subscribed to it and will start checking out videos that interest me there. It is all about how much it costs to make a video on either channel. I am sure this is a ton cheaper on this channel. I just want updates even 7-8 min long with one of you saying hey the first car with Sodium Ion batteries is being sold in china is being sold (it is btw) So yes it may not be a TBD video yet but you might do a short under 10 min shorter these are the updates on Sodium Ion batteries video... or the new updates on Redux flow batteries.. and of course you reference your old videos and can probably use segments of your older video as well. So yes please give us some updates. it dose not need to be a 30 min chat it dose not need to be released on a weekly or biweekly.. just a this just in 5-10 min video or even a less than 1 min short. Please consider fooling around and seeing how much interest vs cost and effort it is to make these updates.. or maybe even tack them onto one of these videos or stack 2-5 of them together to make a desired runtime.

I prefer the aeromine wind turbine. Build two wing towers and put the wind turbine at the bottom. Boeing, for instance, needs a positive ad campaign, so they should push for the aeromine.

OK. So you want a fringe idea. I have important news, and no voice yet. I have been watching the renewable energy concept fail year after year for over 50 years, never coming close to a possible full renewable state. It ALWAYS includes fossil fuels at any level proposed. So I have a full on renewable local build that can be done anywhere there is sky above. I have no interest in profit for myself, I am 69 years old for crying out loud! My only interest in life now is seeing the planet achieve a full blown state of clean and unlimited renewable energy at least in motion in that direction. You can put my name on a big stone, a little stone, or no stone at all! I REALLY do not care about any historical mention that I will never see anyway! LOL You can never reach full time availability using wind and electric generators. Forget chemical, too expensive and too short lived. Compressed air. High pressure. Very inexpensive to store as very huge pressure capable steel pipe will remain usable for hundreds of years. Cheep to transport as steel pipe will also serve double duty as transport and storage. And the wind continues to generate storable energy even when demand base loads are met. No, if you want something different, you must do something different! I would love to have a private video Facebook meeting with you guys and let me answer any questions you have! But remember the mission here will reduce electricity costs by 90% in most places around the world. I also have further mechanical developments that will greatly increase the efficiency of generating electricity with compressed air which I will cover when we speak. Understand, this will not be a fifteen minute conversation. There is simply too much material here if you want all your questions answered. How fast would your community convert to have electricity locally drop in cost this much? And how many years would the planet take to entirely adopt the device? not 30 I would bet! Then we could even take a few moments to discuss the Kardashev scale! One step closer to stage 1! Fascinating! After that, I would give you all the information you need to do a pod cast. I have no intention to patent anything. That would be irresponsible. You can be on the leading edge of the real renewable energy worldwide advance!
