This nationally televised match-up would showcase the homecoming of Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble to the Philadelphia area where they would play the role of visitors in a high stakes hoops battle with the La Salle Explorers, led by their by childhood friend "The L Train" Lionel Simmons. The result would be a yet another classic LMU style high scoring thriller.

Saw that Lasalle team play and win the Sugar Bowl Tournament in December of 1989. Then saw LMU play twice in S.F. and the Sweet 16 Round in 1990. Feel blessed that I got to see Gathers play in person as a kid along with Kimble, Fryer, Simmons, Overton and Woods. Thank you for posting this

Was such a great game. A couple of turnovers go our way (La Salle) and its a different outcome. Sadly Gathers died later that season -- was a privilege just to see him play.

Love to see the Xavier vs Loyola Marymount game from this same year. Xavier gave Loyola one of their few defeats of the year.

Little dougy overton was tough. They were a tough out in the tourney with L-train as one of top players period in the country, top ten NBA pick

Doug had a better Career than Bo Kimble for sure. Loved him with the Bullets as kid.

Nice job by LMU to come all the way across country for road wins vs. St. Joe's and LaSalle. Other than Gonzaga, not sure any other WCC (West Coast Conference) team could have done that.

It’s too bad Hank Gathers passed away just before the tournament. That team nearly made the final four without him.

That was GREAT loyola team. Even without Hank. Kimble and Jeff Fryer were pros also. With him - yeah they were a #2 seed and never had to face UNLV that year. They would have made the Final 4 easily
