Man, this car is great. In Costa Rica we used to have Toyota Crown for Taxis up until 1987. They had 4 and 6 cylinder diesel engines that lasted a million kilometers, then we had the Cressidas that were nice also. Not anymore. Toyotas are becoming very expensive to be bought by taxi drivers. Great cars from an era past.

Almost all wearable parts (engine gaskets, suspension joint and bush and all the shocks) are no longer available from Toyota for the VG40, they are even becoming challenging to maintain in Japan.

Saw alot of this when I went to Japan. We stayed at one of the hotel in Tokyo parked there every morning and got excited to actually look at it for the first time. tbh, I've always interested in Toyota Century and I know what kind of car it is. Ferrying CEOs, ministers and royals. It's like a Japanese Rolls Royce, but wearing a suit instead of tuxedo.

Have a 2000 V12 Century on a boat to British Columbia as I type... will be in my garage and on the road in less than 2 weeks assuming all goes well. Very interesting for you to go through this older model! There's little detail on these fascinating cars online and every bit of new information helps with the waiting process. Enjoy your videos very much- keep up the great work.
@PacificCoastAuto
@PacificCoastAuto 9 лет назад
+yamanote That is very cool. You will have to send me your impressions on the 2000 model year. I love how the styling didn't try to become too modern as the car got newer. The only Centurys I see are in parking lots. I never see them on the road.
@NipponImports
@NipponImports 9 лет назад
+yamanote I went with the older model because here in the US we have the stupid 25 year ban. This one will be up for sale when it gets here. I am patiently waiting until the v12 becomes legal to purchase one for myself. Also If you need parts, please let me know. I have some connections on locating parts for these cars in Japan. Good luck with your Century.
@theyamanote
@theyamanote 9 лет назад
+PacificCoastAuto For sure, I will try to put up a video of it once it gets here and I figure out what's what. I can't promise it'll be as detailed as your videos though! I saw plenty of Centurys around the financial areas of Tokyo as well as around posh hotels, all of which looked newer (of course, a well kept older one looks all but identical to a brand new one, so I can't be sure!). I wonder if they fall into the same state of neglect and disrepair that older S-Classes or 7-series tend to as their initial owners move on. I guess the strict shaken system in Japan would keep most away from these as they get older, as well as the hefty registration tax on a 5 litre vehicle.
@theyamanote
@theyamanote 9 лет назад
+DiVirgilio Imports Thank you, good luck with your Century too! The brownish red is a very unique color... it's too bad the newer V12 ones only come in various shades of grey. And we lose the power quarter windows in the new generation too. Let me know how I can get in touch with you. There are several parts I'm looking for (perhaps from wreckers or junkyards in Japan?), but would prefer not to pay full retail for a new piece.

If this car was sold in the United States in the 1990s with all the options on the car in the video, it would have easily became a symbol to hip hop because of its classy looks, elegance, price tag, and the tape recorder in the back. Too bad it was never sold in the US though

The sound "BBBBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!" somewhere in a region of the front bumper should be the sound of the air compressor. It usually fills the system very slowly... Why didn't you pull the handle on a back of a left front seat? Go & check it. I won't tell you what will (or should) it do, but if that current car has exactly that feature - you will smile. :-) I do love old Japanese devices and cars for such a hidden features. Of course, the language barrier does it's bad business, but sometimes there can be some illogical things that turn to be very good things. Another cap, covering some buttons. Another button which can do something new when pressed for 2 seconds. :-)

The century is a car for important people. In case one bank of the V8 engine fails while driving, the other one can still run. In order to do that, it is equipped with two ignition coils.

Derek, at 18:50 there is the latch I was telling you about where the middle of the passenger seat will lean back and create an even bridge to the rear passenger seat allowing the rear passenger to stretch their legs all the way through the hole. Hence the reason why you have the capability of moving the seat back and forth from the rear.

+DiVirgilio Imports Very cool. I did not notice. I uploaded four cars at the same time to the channel and Naoko and I both guessed which car would make the most traffic. I guessed this car but I was sadly wrong. It is fourth place after two Skyline GT-Rs and an AE86. Sports cars take all the glory but this car is the most interesting to me. I actually want one now after seeing it.

Rahul vinal Narayan This guy really doesnt seem to know much at all about cars. typical salesperson lol. Umm it looks like American cars because they looked good back then. Tired of the ignorant statements....caddys had the soft touch trunk closers WAY WAY BACK. Like he is giving compliments on the easy numb steering but if it wouldve been an American car he would have been putting it down. Btw, that digital dash looks like it came from a 1980s buick.... Also, just being Japanese does not guarantee its gonna be more reliable. Ill accept that being a CENTURY will make it more reliable but NOT simply because its JDM. most US cars were very well built till abot 1973 or so. I understand youbare a fan of JDMs but it shows in your presentation that you are utterly biased. That said, really really cool cars. I have a soft spot for old J tin......would love to get an old cedric or gloria someday.

NO WAY has this car done 40k km. The odometer is obviously on its second (or third!) round or it's been messed with. Centuries are made like tanks and having so many electrical faults shows that it's much older than it shows. Great car. MUCH better than the S-Class or BMW 7 or Audi 8 by miles. And it's for one simple reason - the car is built to be comfortable for the owner, NOT just a collection of "features" to make it sell to an oligarch. I want to say I wish Toyota sold it in the rest of the world, but then they'd produce it in UK or US, and the quality will be ruined.

This is a REALLY cool video but did go on a while so I had to stop it finally. As a side note, a little tip: you may want to consider taking some cues from Doug DeMuro, who goes through a lot of the features and quirks of a car, etc. but does it VERY quickly (and keeps his videos very tight and to the point). This is not to belittle the work that you do, but just tips on how you might want to improve the presentations.

That kind of electric "spinning" side vents shown ca at 5 mins were standard in the mid-late 60s Chrysler Imperial and probably in a few other U.S high end cars. But this Century is basically a 60s car.
