I'm so excited to upload this Specialized Crossroads Cruz in this colorway on RU-vid! I talk about my conversion journey, and what components I went with. Also wanted to show it was possible to use different drivetrain speeds together as long as you go with the ol' reliable, friction mode! Enjoy!

Very cool I’m happy to hear you have one and get to experience how good this frame is!

According to my research steel bike seatpost sizes are based on the OD, wall thickness, and intended use of the frame so a 26.6 generally means decent tubing that may be thicker for strength. Since most steel tubes(non-metric/french) are 28.6 OD it means thinner tubes generally run larger seatposts. I run some old shimano xt friction thumb shifters on a road bike with vintage scott MTB bars and it's pretty awesome. Nice that that specialized is 135mm rear end and has tons of tire room. 700x40+ tires would be super comfy, my old mtb I use for rough roads has a 26x47 and I run no bike shorts most of the time since the tire+seat absorb so much of the bumps.

Thanks for the in depth info I really appreciate that! That’s an aspect that is so cool with these older bikes, the lore behind them.

Nice down to earth bike build and you didn't go crazy with fancy new parts. maybe 45mm tires will be comfortable but not as zippy. Depends what you like. I have no problem with friction shifters 🙂

True that! I love "grounded" bikes. I honestly may think 45 tires might be just right!

Looks good man - if you ever go drop bar, I just set up the Sensah SRX Pro on my gravel build and it is perfect. It's even cheaper now, too.

nice! I'll seriously check that out. I remember the Sensah shifters on my State Bicycle and they were so awesome.

Looks great. I've been eyeing these bikes for a while to do a similar conversion. I believe the rear hub spacing is 135mm, right? So in theory you could run a modern freehub, I think. Nice job!

I highly recommend snagging one if it’s in good condition! You are correct 135mm in the rear and when these wheels are done I’ll be getting a modern set myself!

Have you changed any freehubs when upgrading bikes? I have 1990 nasbar road 6 speed rear cassette. I want to use 2 sets of wheels 1 for clean paved road trails and the other for groomed gravel trails. I got a good price on bontranger race lite but it is a little too wide for my bike in the back. Any ideas?

At the moment no! They may look a tiny bit crusty but are working phenomenally. I’m assuming your rear spacing is 135mm? But the line of hubs that’s on this bike is the Shimano exage with the 135mm rear. Hopefully you can snag some or potentially modify the axle size But also hub bodies I’ve never changed that, so hopefully one day I can to gain knowledge of what it’s like!
