Sophomore sensation and returning National Champion Pat Smith takes on reigning BigTen champ and Iowa stud in Tom Ryan. This match goes just about to the wire and is non-stop action the whole way through!
Pat Smith is my wresting coach at Blue Birds wrestling in Arkansas. It's such an honor to have him as a coach, he's one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.
I’ve heard quite the opposite. I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but not on the mat. Chris Pendleton said that he was monster on the mat, he said he was vicious. Pat Smith beat Pendleton so bad, he knocked out some of Pendleton’s teeth in practice. I don’t know if I’d say he’s mean, but I wouldn’t call him soft, he’s really tough
Holy cow I forgot how good this match was. I'm used to the magic those Smith boys had on the mat, but Tom Ryan looked so naturally athletic on those takedown counters, and his strength in those crazy positions was ridiculous. I didn't follow enough wrestling back then to see if he did anything in freestyle.
Wow, I have this on VHS at my mom's house somewhere. I haven't seen this since 1991 but I remembered all of it as I watched it today 29 years later. What I didn't remember was I was watching future Ohio St coach Tom Ryan as a wrestler. That's pretty damn cool...
Even though I’m not an OKST fan, I can’t argue with that. The only other family that even had a chance to do that is the Sandersons. However Cael would go on to be a legend, and his brothers didn’t do anything like what Cael did
Please don't repeat this stupid saying. Cheating doesn't have anything to do with trying, but everything to do with integrity of the sport and the individual.
The match is long over with and you are right his back was exposed... but he should’ve got hit first for pulling on the headgear as Ryan went into his sit out. This happened right at the point you are talking about. He’s grabbing the inside of the headgear. Not trying to have a big argument... just playing some devils advocate!
One of our all time great wrestlers, but lately has become a whiny B during NCAA matches! Let the boys wrestle, and stop looking for cheap ways to win!!
