@@beyondthestars4299I have no idea what that would have been in Germany, back then. I use SolidWorks, today, for CAD and FEA. A lot of companies do… for mechanical, that is.
I think it's fascinating some of the things you see, like the warping of the subframe being demonstrated, or how that component behaves in a crash test. While crumple zones are a thing, It's almost like it serves as a pivot point in that collision and almost deflects the passenger compartment to the side of the collision, rather than keeping the body aligned with it. It's interesting to think how many components are designed with multiple purposes (other than what they were mainly designed for) for a vehicle, and how difficult it must be to design those abilities in. Or to array them in such a way that they serve an alternative purpose outside of expected application. I'm an amateur mechanic so I think it's just plain neat the things I've been learning about our 3 Toyotas for example, a 1993 T100, a 2004 Corolla, and a 2007 FJ Cruiser, and seeing changes from decade-to-decade as well as different structure types like body-on-frame vs unibody, and how differently they were put together as the decades progressed. The other neat things were physically checking up on the behavior of the suspension and the tires, and especially the testing of the ergonomics of the cabin; seeing how reaching for different regions of the dash and center console seemed to work out and whether or not they would need adjustment prior to fabrication. Now it's all just minimalism and shitty touch screens, and unless you're removing the driver from the equation ENTIRELY it just doesn't work. And they're finally learning that far too after the fact I'm afraid. Nobody working on the car seems to know what the hell they are doing any more, regardless of government regulations. It really makes you wonder how much or how little work like this they put into automotive design now... the way cars are now, they're an unfunny joke.
Part of why cars don’t last as long nowadays is also emissions regulation. Mostly EGR, but Catalytictic converters and Particulate filters also damage engines

There was a saying for mercs in the 80's, 90's and early 00's: "If you want to know what cars will look like in 10 years, just look at the S class now"
@@Patrickhit87 In my opinion they are equally cool and honestly they both have there charm, like how the w140 (can) have a v12 and the LS400 That Toyota reliablity
@@2009FordCrownVic I don’t think they are equal, they are pretty different. I want to say the ls400 is better, but they have kinda two different vibes and purposes. The grand marquis or Lincoln is a pure highway cruiser/sorta work horse, the having owned both the Lexus just feels better on the highway with better visibility, seating room, and quality and power
This mercedes was something like my now VHS player my parrents bought in 2000. Panasonic, hifi stereo, made in japan. 24 years old, never broke down, still works like new, and no signs of stopping. Just like what made in germany once meant. I remember when the new E series came out around 2009 and i was gobsmacked how cheap, and plasticky was the interior. Oh at least we still have this video...
Yeah modern mercs have much poorer interiors. My grandpa’s w203 c class has a great interior, s class-esque by today’s standards, wood and fabric trim, no ‘tinny’ plastics, all hard and soft to the touch. Buttons with good resistance and good engine reliability. Only got 40k miles on it and only issues were a few sensors that have just failed with time. Otherwise it’s apparently in very good condition, probably since it was mostly in the garage. Sad that it’s only worth about £2000 but thank god it’s ulez compliant so we can still give it a regular run every week
Personal story: My dad had this Mercedes W140 when i was a little kid. Once he picked me up from the kindergarden and we drove home. I was playing with the Gameboy (the original 1st one) from my sister in the backseat. Suddenly we stop for no reason. My dad steps out and starts talking with someone. I turn around, and there was a totally smashed Trabant (east german car) standing there. I step out of the car and a women comes to me and asks me if im fine. I answered yes.. She said "u must be so afraid after that crash" - so we crashed into that car because he didnt saw us driving by. I didnt notice a thing. i heard nothing, i felt nothing. And the Mercedes had only a couple scratches, broken front light and a couple dents. I then acted like i was shocked to get sweets from her haha. - it worked This thing was built like a tank.
My father had one of those dark blue color we traveled with it from Kuwait to Damascus to Lebanon and made the journey back. And he was traveling on average. About 160 km to 180 km. What an amazing machine it was. It also had 5 passengers with all of their belongings.
I purchased the same model in 2011 from a local Arab in the UAE. It was in impeccable condition, right down to every bolt and screw. While driving down a road, I encountered a small tunnel. Upon exiting, I had to ascend a slight incline before the road straightened suddenly. As I emerged, traffic came to an abrupt halt. I had to brake hard because I was going a bit too fast. After braking, the car jolted slightly, though initially, I thought it was just in my head. Suddenly, there was a knock on my car window. A gentleman asked if I was alright. I assured him that I was fine and inquired about the reason for his concern. He then informed me that he had collided with my car. Upon inspection, I noticed that his brand-new Mitsubishi Lancer, purchased just a few months prior, was completely wrecked, whereas my W140 rear bumper only had a few scratches. It was truly remarkable...

А те авто делались добротно, безопасно, комфортно и на века. Там действительно присутствовал металл в кузове, оцинковка и т.д. и никакой электроники. Сейчас просто всё - гниющие ТАЗЫ.
So fascinating. I grew up in Romania with this music. I had an uncle that worked in Netherlands and Germany and he would come sometimes with cars from there with this music playing in them, was so fascinating to me, a countryside boy. This was new, refreshing and fascinating. I cant believe that now is already old...
Раньше авто делали для людей, в приоритете стояло качество, комфорт, пытались как-то выделиться. Их до сих пор вспоминают с любовью, чего не скажешь про современные обмылки, о которых забудут в ближайшие годы.

190 Cabs are still alive and kicking today. They last for about a million and more kilometers and thier old inefficient torque converter automatics and fluffy suspension offer comfort like few other things. An amazing car.

My dream car was the Renault 25 when I was little, my father and uncle once had one. It has a fancy voice synthetizer computer system, and the seats were the most comfortable I ever experienced in a car, and everything was high end.
I had a 97 S500 that I had to get rid of and I’m still upset about it. I got it right after high school and I had it for 6 years. Best car I ever had. Lots of great memories in it.
In the 1980s when that car was in process of development it was a "space" car.

There were hits and misses from German cars. One thing I hate is the number of different fasteners used to keep them together. I do not know why a VW Jetta should be any harder to repair than a Toyota Corolla.
