Hard to believe, a storied franchise as the Miami Dolphins, this game was the last time they had a whiff of the Super Bowl. 25 years ago. Surreal. EDIT: 30 years ago and counting.
The Dolphins have been reduced to being happy with at least .500. Playoffs are almost always out of the question. Winning seasons are few and far between. :( Stephen Ross has not delivered success even though he became majority owner of the team in 09. From 09-17, just one playoff appearance, a road blow out loss to Pittsburgh.
8 out of 9 seasons with Ross in majority control have yielded .500 or worse and just once with a record above .500. 10-6, 8-8, 8-8, 7-9, 7-9, 7-9, 6-10, 6-10, 6-10 = 65-79 .451 (basically 7-9 average for 9 seasons). I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel with Tannehill missing a year and trying to come back. That doesn't bode well for a successful 2018. I hope Miami takes serious consideration into bringing a Keenum or other experienced QB into the mix.
Luke Enno good analysis of the W/L record. I used to have orange and aqua in my veins but I just can't root for this team anymore (I became a hard-core fan in '81 so I've seen a lot.)
This game was in 1992 right?? So in the summer of 93 murder OJ killed two innocent people....slick killer acts like that like OJ..karma got him somehow👊👊👊👍👍
heydudedolfan13 and how they managed to beat Pittsburgh the following week is still a mystery to me.It was almost as if both games were fixed for San Diego to win.Miami up 21-6 at halftime and can't score another point the rest of game?Cmon ! And during Steelers game(I'm from Pittsburgh)there was a Nike commercial with Stan Humphries in it where at end said "Super bowl"before the Chargers/Steelers game was even over.I remember that like crystal clear to this day
We were damn good back in the early 90s compared to now. But we were always missing a piece that never got us over that hump to actually win an afc championship and get to play in the big one. #Running game
51:30 or so, after the Miami KO return that was nearly fumbled away to the Bills, from Dick Enberg, "Disaster averted, for the moment..." Phil Hansen: "Hold my beer..."
Thurman Thomas has to be the most underrated RB of All time. Even with a gold jacket . He was arguably the best RB of his time n nobody brings his name in that conversation
Steven Bern Dolphins fans will always know Thurmans name and their other underrated guys to but because they choked in 3 straignt sbs they will always be nobodys Levy ruined some of Miamis best teams teams that woulda actually won the SB
Who do you think Marshall Faulk of the greatest show on turf patterned his game after? And he was drafted originally by Indianapolis when Ted Marchabroda was their head coach. He saw another Thomas and then some. Can you imagine Peyton Manning with Marshall Faulk? Never happened, Faulk was gone by that time.
I love Dan Marino, but even if they had beaten the Bills in that AFC championship game, I seriously doubt they would’ve beaten Dallas in the Super Bowl that year.
Bills fan, but this Dolphin team was stacked. Miami owned the Bills in the 70's and early 80s', like New England would in 2000-2020. But Marino and Shula (RIP) just could not get past Kelly and Levy. Tip of the hat to those Dolphins teams, may our rivalry be renewed from 2020 onward. Most Bills fans consider the Dolphins to be our natural rival.
Too true Jay G. Miami is the Bills natural rival. I had a friend when I lived in Buffalo who was a Dolphins fan. He went to a Bills-Dolphins game (early 90's) wearing a Dolphins jersey and was pelted with snowballs throughout. The 20 year interregnum has ended and the rivalry with the Dolphins will return to its natural state.
Amazing how the AFC East takes so much abuse but go back to 1990, they have been in many SB's and represented the East in the AFC Championship games plenty of times.
I remember thinking as a young Steelers fan that losing to the Bills that year was the worst thing ever. Then they lost to the Chargers a few years later and that one still hurts.
Story of Marino's career. He has two TDs dropped by Clayton and Martin, and the Dolphins can't stop the Bills offense. Also, the offensive line, which was an overrated offensive line, couldn't give him any time to throw.
The Bills were a much better team. The defense kept the Dolphins in the game in the first half. It's hard to keep up that intensity when your team coughs the ball up so many times. It was only Marino's brilliance that kept Miami competitive. Put an average/good QB on those teams, and you would have gone 6-10 for a decade. Shula just couldn't add enough players around Dan to make them a great team. Remember, Griese had a HOF offensive line, 3 great backs and Paul Warfield, plus a terrific defense. Those were GREAT teams with a very good QB. These Dolphins were an average team with one of the greatest QB's of all time.
I remember being so happy when it looked like Houston had them beat because I knew the Dolphins would have a better chance against them over Buffalo. One of the all time "what ifs."
When Marino was drafted he already had a great offensive line waiting for him and protected him well for several yrs. But this is around the time where is was a lull period and started to regress.
Spot on. You covered it all. With the weak offensive line and no running game it was pass to move the ball. You said it about time to throw. The defense wasn’t like the 70’s Super Bowl teams. It was like the Broncos were with Elway until he got a healthy Terrell Davis
Miami were able to beat them at Buffalo during the regular season but The Fins couldn't get pass the Bills in the playoffs in the 90's, they were our "Achilles heel".
These sure were some great teams. Wish I could have watch more when they were playing, but sure am glad I can watch them now. I watched the previous years championship game and Bruce Smith had a bad knee. He didn't look like he could really put all of his weight on it and though he played he was pretty much a warm body. Then I see him in this game, "oh my". Dan Marino with a 3 step drop and laser fast release and Smith hits him before he could through. What an absolute beast!
Thank you JP for posting these time capsule games, commercials and all! This is the third I've watched, and it brings back fond memories of the early 90's enjoying the best team to never win the big game. Look at their record in 1993 against the NFC East. All close, all four wins. They should've won that year in a rematch against the Cowgirls. Oh well, ran out of steam after dominating the first half. Really excited for this season, though!
I remember watching this game. It was the “Who’s going to lose the Super Bowl to either the 49ers or Cowboys” game. The real Super Bowl was the NFC championship game later that day. I liked Buffalo until ‘91, then it was obvious they couldn’t win the big game. Thomas would shine until he got in the Super Bowl, then fumble it away. Did the exact same thing the next year.
Dan Marino brother you should have been in at least 3 superbowls. Even though you might have been 0 and 3 I think you and the rest of my Dolphins could've kept up with the Bears in super bowl 20 and even more so with the Cowboys in super bowl 27. I would have taken an 0 and super bowl record just to watch you guys play. Marino you are the goat. It was an honor watching you sir play the game. Wished I could Go back and see it again. Even in losses you were just amazing to watch. Don't give a shit wat anyone says so don't argue with about any other quarterback, Dan Marino you were and still are the greatest of all time!!!!
Anthony Girodo you are right. They had the Chargers beat and let it slip right through their hands. They surely would've beat the Steelers a week later and advanced to the Super bowl against the 49ers at home that year. So sad it didn't happen.
I agree. I say it all the time. Dan Marino is the greatest qb of all time. When u mention raw talent passing that ball and single handily picking defenses apart, i believe no one is better. The guy didnt even need an offensive coordinator. He literally ran the offense himself and called each play in that huddle. Marino is every great qb’s favorite quarterback.
Marino beat the bears in 85, and Miami bet Dallas 93, the Dallas, would have had trouble, 92,,93, and Sf,in 94, but we only got 84, 83,84,85, 90 92,93,94, 95 were his beat teams
The last NFL on NBC game with those graphics and that theme . And after many years at NBC, Bob Trumpy had his biggest role in his broadcasting career, calling the AFC championship Game three straight years and the Super Bowl two years straight. Well deserved.
What do you call a 3-4 record? A LOSING RECORD! Shoes was 3-4 ALL-TIME against John Madden! Including playoff games, where Shula was 1-2 against Madden, which means he was 2-2 against Madden in regular season games, cementing the FACT that Shula did not have a winning record against John Madden! 1970 AFC Divisional Playoff, Raiders 21, Dolphins 14. 1973 AFC Championship Game, Dolphins 27, Raiders 10. 1974 AFC Divisional Playoff, " The Sea Of Hands " game, Raiders 28, Dolphins 26. Riding an 18 game winning streak, with the first 14 the result of their CUPCAKE SCHEDULE ", Miami met the Raiders in 1973 in Week 2 in Berkley, California and the Dolphins and Shula succumbed to a 46 year old man, George Blanda, who accounted for all of the points the Raiders would score/need to secure victory, 12-7. This was the Raiders first home game of the '73 season and their NEXT 5 games were ALL ON THE ROAD, Pete Rozelle's NFL would try to stick it to the Raiders as often as possible, the Raiders opened the 1975 season with 5 consecutive road games. The Raiders shared their stadium with the Oakland A's baseball team, winners of 3 consecutive World Series, 1972, 1973 and 1974, but NO World Series ever took 5 weeks to play, the 1973 World Series went the full 7 games but it was wrapped up over an 8 day span, October 13, 1973 to October 21, 1973.
As a Bills fan this has always been my favorite rivalry. I grew up watching the Bills against the Dolphins, Marino against Kelly... It is so sad to see those two great franchises being so disfunctional in recent years. Hopefully they will rise again & put an end to the NE reign. Specially if it’s Buffalo!! GO BILLS!!
The franchises are screwed by a Boston franchise that gives defensive calls directly to their QB through a 2nd radio frequency in his helmet that doesnt turn off. Easy to win when u dont have to READ a defense. The NFL isnt gonna expose it self. Why would they? It would cost BILLIONS
@@integrity101 buffalo and Miami and the jets all need to collaborate on a genetic engineering program for their players so that all 3 teams will be so good that until belichick and Co catch on they will get destroyed 2 times a year by all 3vteams probably leaving then out of the playoffs. Out cheat the Cheater like I do on madden 25 all players amped to 99 all qbs either like Brady or manning in ability and all big hitters on offense and defense. And all sliders for both teams set at maxim so no one can say my team won so big because the sliders were up for me and not them. I destroyed the I think 2014 (I forgot which year 25 was for)patriots in New England. I burned it to DVD got most of the game and will upload it. I won 170 to 0 and Brady was hurt the second play of the game and mallet got hurt later. That would teach the NFL and the cheaters.
Oh and we would all win multiple Superbowl and our games would be wars. Of course once we were caught we would end up forfeiting all our games and SB titles and all team leadership from owners possibly even down to the players would end up in jail
Well it seems likely they would've gotten destroyed by the Cowboys had they some how won. Their last true shot sadly was in 85' when they lost to a wildcard Pats and didn't get to play the Bears a team they'd already beatin in the regular season.
@@coolnesss16 I was never sure about them getting destroyed by the Cowboys like the Bills were I think the Dolphins could've matched up better against the Cowboys but they probably still weren't winning that game. Their last shot truly might've been in the mid-80s which were Marino's best teams but I really don't think they were beating that Bears team again. The Bears had a fluke loss against them on MNF, the Bears were rolling into the Super Bowl.
I was one year old the last time the Dolphins played in an AFC Championship. Wish I could have some memories of this team that aren't all disappointing. 2008 was the one season I remember being proud of this team, 1-15 to 11-5 was the greatest turnaround in NFL history, just wish they would've built on it.
Thanks for posting. This was Marino and Shulas last real chance at another Super Bowl appearance. I was pulling for San Francisco and Miami. Of course they both lost at home that day.
Kellen Flanders I was 8 and still remember everyone in school wearing dolphin colors in support. Oh the disappointment I'm glad the cowboys smashed the bills.. The bills had a great team the, Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed, don't bb, Bruce Smith and others really a great team
I was 10. Ive been a hardcore dolphin fan as long as i can remember. If someone would have told me then, that this would be the best years I would experience watching my team play I would not have believed it.
I was 21, what's cooler, I got to watch Marino from the first game in 83, , 84 Superbowl, that hurt, 85 loss to the pats acf championship game,, hurt, we beat the bears,in 85, 92 was PISSED, and 93 sucked, great team that years, 94 chargers game REALY piss me off when Pete miss the 44 yard field goal, but the 90 team was great to , 12, 4, lost to bills , , hated the bills In the 90s , late 80s
This game is a treat to watch! I'm a N.Y. Jets fan and both quarterbacks should have won a super bowl ring I miss 1990s football. I was 12 years old when this game was played hopefully the N.Y. Jets in a few years will be a force in the afc east
36:14, perfect play, Marino rolls out to his right, smoothly drops the ball right into Mark Clayton's hands near the goal line...who drops it. Just one of those games, nothing went right.
Yeah that was fairly early in the game. I got to say, he's the only one I've ever seen throw that type of pass. No one threw a ball like Dan Marino. No one! A TD there could have definitely changed things. You're right though. Nothing went right that day... SMDH!
@@whataboutrob442 No way man. That guy was way ahead of his time. Don't compare his numbers to what you see today. The game is waaaaay different. The best way to judge a player is by seeing how he's spoken about by his peers. Need I say more?
Die hard Bills fan here. This Miami team was very strong and extremely arrogant. They destroyed us at home that year, we got revenge in Miami in a tight Monday night game later in the season. The good guys won at the end :)
I member watching this game here and there when i was 9. Just barely became a Phins fan and boy did that loss hurt badly and cried like a baby when they lost. Pops asked me why am I crying and i told him what happened. He said, no worries. They're playing next week against the cowboys and they'll lose. Thanks Boys for crushing their dreams from getting a SB ring🙏🏻😁. By the way, i love the how you left the commercials on the game. So nostalgic. So simple. Keep up the good ood work 🤟😁 GO PHINS! 🐬
Sweet grandpa story but still 32 years later and well, not much has changed, could you possibly get your first olayoff win this century tomorrow? idk at least back then you had playoff wins
I like these old broadcasts in standard definition. It showed you just enough and left some things to the imagination. The broadcasts today in high definition show everything and leave no detail to the imagination which is unnecessary. Plus football players don't get dirty or muddy anymore like back in these days.
I remember the lead up to this game. My fifth grade teacher even canceled learning the Friday before so we could have an all day "Dolphin Day" party. The whole city was electric. That year's team was so fun to watch. Us fans just knew this was it. We had just crushed San Diego. Marino was not going to be denied this time. Then this game happened. Little did I know then I was watching the closest the Dolphins would come to the big game for the next thirty years....and counting.
I’m a Buffalo Bills fan. However, big Dan Marino fan. From what I saw, the Dolphins kept Tom Olivadotti for about decade. Don Shula didn’t change. Then they couldn’t even run the ball pre Dan Marino getting there. The Dolphins had 5-6 seasons of no 1K rushers pre Marino. Their WRs weren’t as good as advertised. JMO. Dan Marino made Mark Duper and Mark Clayton. Jim Kelly had three HOF players on offense at one time in Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed and James Lofton. Imagine Marino with all that talent around him. Then Marino’s defenses were good at times, but never much when it mattered most. If Marino was on the 90s Bills, they’d own a few Super Bowl championships.
Thanks for posting, even though as a Dolphins fan, this was painful. .It would have been nice to Marino in another SB though. Of course, we are used to pain now pretty regularly..
THE most painful loss I've ever endured as a sports fan. My family were up in Disney world this weekend, and we left the park, got stamped, and went to our hotel to watch this game. All I remember is one screen pass to Thurman Thomas after another. I don't think Miami Dolphins fans have ever been as hyped as they were for this game. We wanted payback for the year before. We wanted to get back to being in Super Bowls, and we really felt like there was no way we'd lose. I remember not wanting to go back to Disney after the game, and just being in the worst mood ever. Brutal heartbreak. And we haven't played in an AFC game since.. Unreal.
Bob Thumpy needed to do a fact check because Don Shula was the BALTIMORE COLTS Head Coach from 1963 - 1969 Don Shula become the Head Coach of the MIAMI DOLPHINS in 1970
I was at this game, I think I left at halftime. After a divisional shut out 28-0 in pouring all-day rain, it was so frustrating to see this kind of performance at home in an AFC Championship Game.
Yeah, the Bills pretty much owned us They were such a nuisance, but you have to respect Levy and the core of the Bills.. Even thought I am a Dolphins fans, I was totally rooting for them against the Cowboys but that didn't pan out too well...lol.
Miami had their run against Buffalo, the definition of OWNED was Miami's 20-0 record against Buffalo in the 1970's, 20 straight W's for the 'Fins during the decade, Buffalo won the second meeting in 1969, 28-3 in Buffalo and they wouldn't beat Miami again until Week 1 of the 1980 season, 1 17-7 in Buffalo.
@@Derek-tk4wf I think most of us are biased with the eras we grew up in, but by 1987 I was 21 and 1987-2000 were largely forgettable football seasons, I'll take the Sensational Seventies every time! The Egomaniacal Eighties brought the original " look at Me Buffoon ", Mark Gastineau, 2 Strikes and Brian " Bulldozed By Bo " Bosworth, an era that owes REAL NFL fans an apology for! The No Fun League Nineties was more notable for failures, Buffalo's 0-4 in the Super Bowl and 3 Broncos blowout Super Bowl losses, a combined 0-7!
As if we needed more proof, but here it is. Dan Marino was playoff challenged. Another BIG game and Dan and the offense put up all of 10 pts. and Marino has his typical big game Passer Rating of around 60. He had a Rating of around 60 in 75% of his BIG games.
So true iLO80. These days I watch games these days with my wife daughters (9 & 5 years old). In sarcasm I say to them "Look at all the fans wearing blue (referring to the empty seats) and proceed to shake my head. Thank God for RU-vid because it give me a chance to show them how it use to be down there when they were relevant. One more thing... In all of this we fail to mention the fans of the other teams that seem to take over the stadium these days. Sad!
Last time I was in Miami this guy talks me up about dolphin history for a good 10-15 minutes (was there for a Bills game) so I stop and say so who do you like more the U or the phins and he said the U all day not even close, I feel like in Miami it’s somewhat fair weather, unless it’s the U, then it’s diehard.
@@smfalconsnipers124 I'd say that's a somewhat fair assessment of 'today's' fan but like most fanbases it's a "what have you done for me lately" type of fandom. I love all my Miami sports teams, especially the Fins and Canes but I"m a bigger Fin fan than anything else. Growing up, there were lots of SF/DAL fans growing up but unsurprisingly, they were Canes fans...and of course they will be because of their championship success. Today's kids have grown up watching the "Brady Era" AFC East in which we've been below average, so naturally--unless parents have pressed the fandom, they lose interest or place them lower than the Canes and Heat. There are bandwagon fans everywhere. As a kid, I knew 0 Patriot fans. Today, that number is exponentially higher.
Here in Brazil one of our NFL commentators is a Dolphins fan. He lived in Florida from the time he was 7 and came back when he was 24. He Is a Florida Gator alum. And he is still pissed at Andre Reed due to the games between the Dolphins and the Bills back them. Especially the playoff matchups
If the Bills ever win a Super Bowl, they should give one to every prominent member who has a good relationship to the Bills organization that were on the 90-93 AFC Champs (Coach Levy, Kelly, Thomas, Smith, Reed, Gilbert, Talley, Bailey, Christie to name a few). I'd add Reich and Beebe but they got rings and Reich is the Colts HC lol
2:45:53. That right there is a recurring image of the Dan Marino I idolized as a kid. Walking off the field after just throwing a touchdown, but cursing and disgusted because his team never gave him a chance.
What a good team Marino had in 1992-a Top 10 Offense, a Top 10 Defense, and his backs had OVER 2,500 yds. rushing and receiving. But once again Dan got outplayed by Jim Kelly in a playoff game. This happened all 3 times they played each other in the playoffs.
Humble but proud Bills fan. Shula is an all time great, but he had a losing record to only one coach. Marv Levy. RIP Don Shula. A worthy competitor and class act. And yes this was the best Dolphin team of the era.
Tom brady and this generations patriots wouldnt have dominated the afc east in the 80s and 90s like they do now. Football has gotten so soft in the last decade or so.
@@Vinny_Gigante oh I don't know. The Patriots always gave the k gun Bills fits except for a few games even before Parcells or Belichick, although Brady and Belichick were after the k gun.
Its ashamed they didn't put more talent around Marino to challenge the Bills. The Dolphins were more like the finesse east coast version of the 49ers but came up short when it counted the most. Great memories though.
I was on my honeymoon in xtapa Mexico......the Westin hotel brought in extra dishes to pickup the game.........also watched the Chargers win there in Mexico..........this was a heart breaker............still married to my wonderful wife who couldn’t understand why I was so upset with this loss...........I said “u don’t understand this was the last chance for the Dolphins 🐬🏈 and Dan Marino to go to the Super Bowl “...........sadly I was correct ☹️
@@marcuspoole5351 The Dolphins picked the wrong time to play their worst game of that season. They were at home and played much worse than the Week 14 49er game. I thought they were going to the Super Bowl that year when they were 6-0. Then came the 2-5 slump.
