"There's Nothing Like A V8"
The BMW E32 is the second generation of the BMW 7 Series luxury cars and was produced from 1986 until 1994. It replaced the E23 and was initially available with straight-six or V12 powerplants. In 1992, V8 engines became available. From its inception, the E32 was among the most technologically advanced series of cars in its day.
In 1991, BMW began production of its first V8 engine since the end of BMW 501/502 production in 1962.[22] This M60 V8 was introduced in the E32, along with the E34 5 Series. The 4.0 litre version powered the new 740i/iL models, and the 3.0 litre version was sold in parallel with the M30 straight-six in the 730i/iL models.[23] The top speed of the 740i was electronically limited to 240 km/h (149 mph).[24] Both V8 engines were coupled to a new, 5-speed automatic transmission made by ZF. The Nikasil bore lining used in the M60 engine was prone to damage when used with high-sulfur fuels.
The M60B40 has a bore of 89 mm (3.50 in) and a stroke of 80 mm (3.15 in),[4] for a total displacement of 3,982 cc (243.0 cu in). Compression ratio is 10.0:1,[4] giving 210 kW (282 bhp) at 5800 rpm and 400 N⋅m (295 lb⋅ft) at 4500 rpm.[9] It had a forged crankshaft

30 years on this car still looks very cool! 😎 Discreetly aggressive and athletic, but not vulgar or OTT. Not something you can say of the current 7....or most of the BMW lineup in general. What a pity they lost that elegance they once had in spades.

Such a beautiful car! I bought the E38 740iL back in 2000, when car shopping I debated on getting a used E32 740iL since I loved the distinctive style. The E38 was a king 👑 of a luxury car. Fast forward 20 years and I acquired (or saved) my ultimate dream car the e23 L7. I still have confidence I will one day get a beautiful E32 just like the one in this test. Unfortunately I can’t imagine owning any 7 series manufactured after 2001.

Yes, after the E38, from the E65 in 2002 on, the 7 wasn’t really a sport sedan. It got bloated and overwrought with gimmicks, it was no longer small and light for its segment. Started chasing the S-class instead of being its own animal. 🫤

My daily driver. It was the very first (used in 1998) BMW out of many since. I had to get another one 20 years later! Now the carbon copy of my first one has 186k miles and still going strong. These are fantastic economical and comfortable cars. And still had that very German feel and look to it. They’ll take whatever you can throw at it in the curves. I’ll add too that this is the chassis upon which the 8 series later was built. It’s also the only chassis designation that is higher than a car that was built later (E32 vs E31)

@@RetroCarReviews Was it really a 1988 is my question? Easily might've been a brand new 1991 750iL, just because the budget could afford it. I'm surprised when TV or film production buy and/or utilize brand new expensive cars, that look nearly identical to used examples. Case in point, a sitcom using a brand new 1994 1/2 540i in an episode taped in late 1993, then damaged it. Plus later crashed it on camera, for a similar effect in a later on location 1994 taping. Never made sense considering how expensive it was for the time.

@@Boblib1970 What’s your point? Comparing today‘s automatic transmissions to a 1980s automatic? Wow! Back then GM and Ford used 4 speed transmissions mostly, so a 5-speed gearbox was better and something advanced back then. And if you see the huge differences with styling, build quality, handling and brake performance American sedans were just crap for any driver that wanted a safe but speedy ride. American car industry went downhill in the 1970s and has yet not recovered in the Premium car sector. It is no coincidence that Japan and Germany totally took over the worldwide Premium car market. Bentley and Rolls-Royce are actually also German.

A lot of updates happened in late 1991/early 1992 for the E32. HIDS, park assist, standard passenger airbag, new aero guard on bumper, etc. E32 offered PDC in Europe from early '92, but USA didn't until November 1994 on E38. I get your comment.
