HD 1992 Eddie Van Halen Complete Tribute Jeff Porcaro Press Conference footage backstage Toto Lukather
Complete SHOW - Rehearsal
Eddie Van Halen - Tribute to Jeff Porcaro (Toto) - December 14, 1992
Press Conference Interview and Rehashing Live Jimi Hendrix “Fire” cover
The Classic Tribute Concert From 1992 To The Late Toto Drummer Jeff Porcaro, legendary session drummer and Toto skinsman for many years, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on 5th August 1992 at his home in Southern California.
On 14th December the same year, Jeff s surviving band mates (which included his brothers Jeff and Mike Porcaro, Mike passed on in 2015) performed at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles alongside a host of music giants who had gathered to pay their respects to the talent, versatility and downright human decency of a man who had performed alongside the great and the good during his career, which had been so sadly cut short while the master musician was in his prime.
The audience was filled with musicians too, as well as admirers from all of Porcaro’s vast work as one of the industry s most in-demand studio musicians, and as a founding member of the multi award-winning Toto.
First of the guest stars to appear was Michael McDonald (who has lent his voice to a Toto project or two) with David Crosby singing backup. Next out was Donald Fagen of Steely Dan (with whom Porcaro had played regularly) making a rare appearance to an appreciative crowd.
Boz Scaggs was also on hand to perform Lowdown and Lido Shuffle from his 1976 smash Silk Degrees album, while Don Henley offered up his Dirty Laundry. Joining Toto frontman and lead guitarist Steve Lukather for a duelling axe version of Jimi Hendrix’s Fire was Eddie Van Halen who managed to raise the stage volume to near ear-splitting levels, and stayed on to accompany Toto on their first hit Hold The Line.
Other Toto hits performed naturally included Rosanna , Africa, and I’ll Be Over You . Considering Porcaro’s death came after a commitment to tour the Far East, this tribute was sadly, but befittingly, rumoured to be the last official Toto concert. This, thankfully, was not the case of course, as the band continue to perform and record to this day Filling in for Jeff on drums was Simon Phillips who had to feel somewhat strange sitting in that coveted seat.
The show was capped off with special guest George Harrison joining in on guitar for a line-swapping, Joe Cocker arrangement of With A Little Help From My Friends between Lukather, Scaggs, Henley, McDonald and Crosby, with the entire crowd on their feet.
This entire tribute concert were available on this double CD set, which reveals a show as emotionally charged as it was brilliantly conducted, and which will surely remain a rare delight for fans of Jeff Porcaro, Toto and the host of legends who devoted their time to say one last goodbye.
Tracks:
CD1: Gypsy Train, Childs Anthem, I´ll Supply The Love, I´ll Be Over You, I Keep Forgettin´, Takin´It To The Streets, Georgy Porgy, If It´s The Last Night, Angela, I Won´t Hold You Back, Don´t Stop Me Now, Africa, Percussion Solo.Chain Lightning, Josie, Little Wing & Kingdom Of Desire.
CD2: Low Down, Lido Shuffle, Angel Don´t Cry, Don´t Chain My Heart, Rosanna, Dirty Laundry, You Better Hang Up, Come Rain Or Come Shine, Fire, Ain´t Talkin´Bout Love, Hold The Line, & With A Little Help From My Friends.
Musicians on the Jeff Porcaro Tribute Concert album: Steve Lukather, David Paich, Mike Porcaro, Simon Phillips, Chris Trujillo, Jenny Douglas-McRae, Donna McDaniels, John Jessel James, Lenny Castro, Michael McDonald, David Crosby, Denny Dias, Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs, Don Henley, Eddie Van Halen and others.

I have to agree with everyone. I met Jeff when I was 21 (58 now) and I was the guitar in a band called "Baboo" named after our lead singer. Jeff was good friends with Baboo, who played with so many including the Toto Guys, Ry Cooder, Jackson Browne, etc. and Jeff was producing our band. I remember going David's (Paich) place and he was going to also help us out. Jeff and I spent some time outside of that because he invited me to his house while he was building his studio and as everyone said he was so generous. Here he was HUGE in the music business and I was nobody, but he treated me like a bro and inspired me. A couple/few years after our band disbanded I saw him at A & M where I was recording and my 5 year old son was there with me and we sat and talked for a long time and he was so cool again. A great spirit. I remember he bought my son a soda and what was weird was years later I said to my son "Do you remember that guy" because he name came up and he said "Yeah, he bought me a soda". I still have about 20 or 30 cassettes from our pre-production over at Leeds and he set up his drums next to our drummer's up on the stage and I had the distinct pleasure of playing with him and as everyone said Jeff was unbelievable! Off the chain. I'm going to digitize those cassettes in the next little bit and listen. All I can say is R.I.P. Jeff. You were a bro to me in the short time we hung out and I will always remember that and celebrate your life! I hope the family is doing well!

Boz Skaggs’ Silk Degrees album was hugely influenced by Toto ( Also MJ’s Thriller album). He’s often asked if he’s kind of the founder of Toto. He doesn’t take credit for that, though he said it would be cool if he had. He took them on his Silk Degrees tour because he was so blown away by their professional musicianship. That’s where they really honed their skills and came together as not just session players but as a tight knit band capable of making it on their own. So, yes, I give credit to Boz for being at least the one who gave them the platform for making Toto into the Toto we know and love.

I loved Toto the way a lot of us did through the 80s, through a deep, abiding appreciation of and respect for the musicianship of its members and the perpetual presence of Toto’s music as part of the soundtrack of our lives. My friends and I were into what was known then as “Metal” but what would disparagingly become known as “Hair Metal,” but somehow came away from the decade with favorites that came from a multitude of more popular artists like Ah Ha, Tears for Fears, Berlin, Michael Jackson, Blondie, Simple Minds, Hall & Oates, and a host of others. Toto, unlike many of the other great pop bands/artists of the 80s, actually made it into my record collection with the 1982 release of Toto IV, which included the miraculous, “Africa” and inimitable, “Rosanna.” The music, like that of Simply Red, Steely Dan, and more is a symphony of brilliance that pleases on multiple levels and brings an almost Zen-like communion to listeners. They just don’t make ‘em like that, anymore. But, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for their return. We cannot subsist on the airy, soulless stuff being produced today.

I may have posted this before so apologies if I am repeating myself. About a week or so before the concert I received a call from Chris(?) with Toto Legend Fan Club, who I had done some artwork for, and he brought up that there was going to be a tribute show for Jeff and if I wanted to join them and watch the concert with him and Laurie Stine (director of the Legend) and others. I had to unfortunately decline the offer since my then wife and I had just had our daughter a few months earlier and I was also strapped for money. I know it was the right choice, but I do have moments of regret that I didn't go. I guess considering how big of a fan I have been of the band and each of the individual members it makes sense I would have a little regret. I am very fortunate that I have met Jeff, David, Luke, Steve P., Mike, and Bobby over the years after shows. Lots of great memories including taking both my daughter (about a year after she had her own daughter) and my son to Toto concerts. The music will always live on.

This sheds new light on Porcaro-Goings lawsuit and what she says about Lukather and his loyalty to Jeff. What a witch. I click off most of the Lukather interviews I view because he just makes me cringe with his passive-aggressive "I'm very awesome - but I've had it so hard" type of nonsense. But this just shows something completely different that what Jeff's widow alleged in her claims.
